Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri is a Saudi Arabian man that was accused of being the mastermind behind the bombing of the American destroyer Cole in 2000. His entire defense team, except for Navy Lieutenant Alaric Piette, had resigned in protest because the government was monitoring the conversations between the defendant and the defense counsel. Lieutenant Piette is a 39 year old former Navy SEAL that became a lawyer in 2012 when he graduated in 2012 from Georgetown University’s law school. After graduating, he would work criminal cases at Naval Station Norfolk in Virginia as a Navy lawyer for five years. Afterwards, in April of 2017, he would be hired to work on the Nashiri case. The November 17, 1994 Dallas Observer published an article titled “Tell Momma Why You Cry” describing the incidents surround the removal of the Krasniqi children from their home. In this article Sam Krasniqi, the father, was accused of sexually assaulting his ten year old daughter Lima. Once the children were removed from their childhood home they were placed into the Buckner Baptist Children’s Home in East Dallas (Zimmerman, 1998). Kathy Krasniqi, Tim and Liam’s mother, pleaded multiple times with the case worker to be sensitive with their Muslim identity (Zimmerman, 1998). Her requests were denied because the case worker believed “… these people always stay together” (Zimmerman, 1998). This statement reflected the case workers negative viewpoints regarding the Muslim heritage. The first section will discuss the lack of resources used during the Krasniqi case. On January 13th, 1999, a high school girl from Baltimore, Maryland, Hae Min Lee disappeared after school. Hae was found just a few miles away in Leakin Park, a few weeks later, where it was determined that the cause of death was manual strangulation. Not long after, Hae’s ex-boyfriend, Adnan Syed was arrested and tried for her murder and is now spending life in prison. After hearing Sarah Koneig’s Podcast, Serial where she went back to re-investigate the trial it became clear that the jury does not have enough evidence to convict Adnan Syed for the murder of Hae Min Lee for many reasons including, the lack of evidence, lack of motive, and the reliance of memory is not enough to convict Adnan Syed.

He also wanted to understand the western culture better as well, that way his operatives could better blend in with the surroundings. There were numerous failures on America’s intelligence agencies that led up to this event occurring.
On an ordinary day, October 12, 2000, in the port of Aden, Yemen, a small boat pulled aside the USS Cole. The unimportant boat looked unthreatening until a suicide attack occurred. The bombing was devastating, leaving a gigantic hole in the ship, killing 17 American sailors and injuring 39. The attackers were known enemies from Al- Qaeda, which had committed attacks against other countries. The attack on the USS Cole was one of the events that triggered the war on terror, which is still going on today. The U.S. had not concerned itself with Al-Qaeda until this vicious attack. The attack on the USS Cole began a war between terrorists and the U.S; the U.S now knows how dangerous Al-Qaeda is especially after the attack of 9/11. While the medium of calligraphy has commonly been ink on paper, contemporary artists continuously stretch and challenge the boundaries this traditional art. Two artists in particular represent such efforts to provide new shape and life to calligraphy: Hassan Massoudy and Mattar bin Lahej. Transforming calligraphy from a static art, Iraqi artist Hassan Massoudy introduces theatrically-inspired form and movement to his letters, while Emirati artist Mattar bin Lahej transitions calligraphy to the third dimension by his sculptures. Despite the visual differences between these two artists’ works, both reflect to re-explore the expressive capacities of the word.
The Islamic tradition, as reflected in Naguib Mahfouz’s Zaabalawi, has over the course of history had an incredible impact on Arab culture. In Mahfouz’s time, Islamic practices combined with their political relevance proved a source of both great power and woe in Middle Eastern countries. As alluded to in Zaabalawi, Mahfouz asserts the fact that not all Muslims attain religious fulfillment through this common tradition, and other methods outside the scope of Islam may be necessary in true spiritual understanding.
Many conspiracy theories exist about the attacks. Although it is commonly held that the terrorist organization Al-Qaeda is responsible, some think it was an inside job—coming from the United States. Others acknowledge Al-Qaeda as the perpetrator, but blame the cause on past involvement of the United States in the Middle East. One such person is Amiri Baraka. In his poem, Somebody Blew Up America, Baraka points to the larger system as the root cause of violence. He never blames a single entity, but through the use of rhetorical questioning it is obvious as to whom Baraka is accusing as being the real terrorist.
