Marriage and Family Therapists (MFT) work in an environment in which they deal with situations that can pose ethical dilemmas on a daily basis and encounter more ethical challenges than therapist who work in one on one setting. MFTs are governed by the law as well as by ethics. They are responsible for remaining in compliance with the standards set fourth by the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (AAMFT) Code of Ethics as well as the laws of their state. When the two conflicts, the MFT must do everything with in their power to uphold the ethical standards of the code of ethics and the law.
The American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (AAMFT) Code of Ethics provides guidance for MFT’s to follow that will help them make ethical decision as well as help them determine what is and what is not considered an ethical dilemma. The AAMFT ethical standards cover the therapist responsibility to their clients, confidentiality, professional competence and integrity, responsibility to students and supervisees, research and publication, technology- assisted professional services, professional evaluations, financial arrangements, and advertising. I believe being a good therapist requires more than that. A good therapist not only follows the ethical standards and the law, they also have a genuine desire to help people and are willing to work through their own person feeling and value systems to do so. I don’t believe ethical codes limit the therapist’s work with clients. The codes serve as guideline to help them when they are faced with situations that are can be compromising. Tis interview has shown me that as a therapist, I will constantly faced with situation that may present me with an ethical dilemma. It is important for me to understand when I am face with one and use all my available resources when dealing with
