Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), is one of many main leading issues within the lives of both children and adults of the United States population. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “The percentage of children with an ADHD diagnosis continues to increase, from 7.8% in 2003 to 9.5% in 2007 and to 11.0% in 2011. Approximately 11% of children 4-17 years of age (6.4 million) have been diagnosed with ADHD as of 2011” (CDC, 2013). Included in that diagnose lies a persistence of symptoms that runs into their years of adolescence, adulthood and eventually causes frustration and even pain that is emotional. ADHD is one of the most controversial issues both in the United States and worldwide. Understanding the seriousness and implications of this outbreak is essential to coping with it. ADHD was first discovered in the early 1900s, by a British doctor, Dr. Still who gave the disorder the name of “Defect of Moral Control” despite this name he believed that the disorder was a medical condition rather than a spiritual defect. In the year of 1980, the American Physiciatric Association then changed the name from Defect of Moral Control to Attention Hyperactivity Deficit Disorder known as ADHD. ADHD is one of the many leading issues among children and adults, but majority of children and its prevalence is little by little increasing. ADHD is a serious disorder within an individual’s behavior and brain that can eventually effect mentally or physically. Also, there are many routes available to individuals with ADHD and their families so that they are able to cope with this disability. Provided to these individuals are a load of medications, treatments, counseling and behavioral and treatment facilities. Understanding the seriousness and implications of this outbreak is essential to coping with it. Alongside, there are a handful of problems and complications. However, the most effective strategy is love, encourage and be there for the individual with this disorder, but allow them to know that there is nothing that is too hard that they cannot do. Stated by Rapoport, “try to make sure that you are teaching these wonderful children with ADHD, you remain optimistic and hopeful relating to all of the ways that these children can learn positive social skills” (Rapoport, 2006).
