Till now we have listened to tens of speeches in ABE 490 and most of them are very helpful in both finding a job and planning on the future career path. Speakers from different backgrounds and career paths told us that we can work in various industries and areas. As an international student in ABE who is looking for a job after graduation, I will sum up some very useful take home messages from speakers we have listened so far. The first speech is about how to write a good resume from Veronica Rahim of Purdue CCO. An attractive resume of an engineering student should be organized, targeted and detailed. To be organized, experiences should be separated into several parts including Work Experience, Extracurricular, Leadership, volunteer and etc. …show more content…
Her speech inspired me to find a job instead of applying for graduate school. I was struggling that what major I should learn in graduate school as I assumed I need to get to one. In Elizabeth’s speech, she said that working after graduation instead of going to graduate school can discover what we want to do. It is also very beneficial when we are sure that we want to study more to become an expert in graduate school. However, I felt that it is more important to know the area that I want to work for many years by working than become an expert in an area that I never want to talk …show more content…
It is important to negotiate about salary or other plans right before accept the offer, especially when the amount offered is low than the average of other employees under the same condition in the industry and the area. Sometimes when someone has multiple offers with similar salaries and benefits, it is possible to get a higher salary and benefit by simple negotiation. There are some useful tips for negotiation may also be tips to other communication events. First of all, act poised during asking. The words like ‘hate to ask but…’ or ‘you might not think…’ are not poised and sound unconfident. It is better to be confident and talking about what you are good at about the job. Second, act flexible. By giving a range of salary instead of a specific amount, the company will have more choices and feel better about the negotiation. I used above tips to follow up after two rounds of interview. The company told me that they would contact me late October or early November for technical interview. However, I didn’t heard anything from them since then. I am not sure whether I am rejected or they delayed the technical interview. So I sent an e-mail to HR manager about my desire to get the job and why I think I can be a perfect candidate to the position and to the company. I also showed that I could understand if they have already hired someone else for the position but I still would love to hear from
The world would have been very different if we had not landed on the moon and made it back safely those couple days in July of 1969. Many people were nervous and skeptical that the mission of Apollo 11 wouldn’t work, some even coming to the worst case scenario. As a president, President Nixon had to be prepared for any outcome of this great event in history. Regardless of the mission’s success, a speech was prepared for the outcome of Apollo 11 failing. The speech, In Event of Moon Disaster, written for President Nixon, effectively uses pathos and logos to appeal to a distraught nation in fragile time and uses descriptive language to regain the embodiment of hope again in the country. Because it was written before the event took place, however,
Ehrenreich opens the book by seeking out a “career coach”, in other words, someone who will help her navigate the sea of job opportunities. From Ehrenreich’s description, the biggest thing the coaches bring to the table is enthusiasm and support. Many results have been positive from someone having a coach to guide them. Barbara was off to a good start in her journey.
Theadore Rosevelt is trying to save all the resources. He is giving a great speech in Osawatomie, Kansas on August 31, 1910. He states the natural resources are being exhausted. He is trying to the save the resources before they are all used up before the next generation.

People continue to wonder if college is worth the time and money spent with numerous individuals still unemployed, a valid concern of young students. Despite the information the majority have heard about unemployment rates, this is not a valid argument. (Michael Greenstone and Adam Looney) notes, “In Apr. 2013 the unemployment rate for college graduates aged 25 and over with a bachelor’s degree was 3.6%, compared to 5.0% for associate’s degree holders, 7.5% for high school graduates, and 11.4% for high school drop-outs.” These statistics alone should put your mind at ease relieving concerns an individual may have in respects to finding a job in their field. Moreover, employers that can see someone’s passion toward the carrier they’re seeking will increases one’s chance of successfully finding
what I wanted to become. So after graduation I decided to explore my options at
For the informative speech I chose to inform my audience about Muncie Indiana. I did this topic to get the attention of ball state students, and make them realize what an awesome place Muncie Indiana really is. I informed them on the history of Muncie to hopefully encourage them to get more involved in the community outside of classes. I feel that the students learned a lot about Muncie they would have never known. I do believe could have done a better job at making in more intriguing and kept their attention all the way through my speech. If I would have done this better I would have been able to sale the idea getting more involved with the city that brought thousands of students their college education.
On June 12, 1987, President Ronald Reagan visited the Brandenburg Gate in Germany’s capital of Berlin. In 1987, Berlin was celebrating its 750th anniversary and was host to the most dramatic symbol of the cold war, the Berlin Wall. After World War II, the Allies divided Germany among the victors, the western half under democratic control and the eastern half under communist control. Berlin too was divided just as Germany into east and west sectors and the Soviet Union erected a physical barrier in 1961 in order to quell the rampant migration of defectors to the democratic West. From the 1940’s to the 1980’s the United States and the Soviet Union had been staunch political adversaries embraced in a contest for democracy and communism (History.com Staff, 2009).
Secondly, we learned with whom we need to negotiate, how to start and what to prepare. For negotiation are needed at least two parties/interests that are interdepended, it is not worth to negotiate about salary with the person from whom level of your salary is not depended. State the goals before negotiation – what we would like to reach, and how we want to be viewed by other part (“don’t lose your face”). It is needed to be flexible; it can help to get “winner” position.
There are several milestones that our society uses to measure personal development and suitability for advancement to higher degrees of social responsibility. One such milestone is career selection and attainment. Some individuals may never find a satisfying vocation, whereas others know what they desire from the day they can communicate. A simple way to reduce the unfortunate friction of choosing a career is to be self-aware. Understanding what makes one happy, fulfilled, and the things that are important to them, is the easiest way to narrow down the world’s endless possible occupations and ensure job satisfaction. There are many ways to gain personal enlightenment, perhaps the simplest and most effective way is to take a course geared towards career development.
For so many years I’ve asked myself the question, “what are you going to do with your life?” For a period of time I struggled with this question. Today, I sit staring at my computer, confronting myself, asking my subconscious “what do I want to do for the rest of my life?” Have I finally found the answer I 've been looking for, or am I under the false assumption that this is the right path for me. This semester has been the ultimate opportunity to explore my questions, doubt, issues, and concerns. I feel that by the end of this paper I will have answered all these questions, and will have made the best decision for my future.
With all the independence and freedom that recent high school graduates possess, they should carefully ponder the possible options that exist. Through abiding by the “check the destination before the ticket is purchased” adage, high school graduates can competently guide their personal journeys in college life or the real world. Regardless of the path chosen, college students and those who immediately enter the workforce will ultimately decide their future destinations. In addition, while graduates pursue their dreams, goals must be set and diligently fostered. The necessity of a college and/or career game plan is crucial, and should not be disregarded. Before Dr. King ended his “I Have a Dream” speech he declared, “Nineteen sixty-three is not an end, but a beginning.” Similarly, high school graduation is not a finish line, but a starting gun.
Colleges and universities need to be structured so that they prepare students for specific career roles, as well as give them a level of appreciation for the world in which they live. Brewer’s succe...
According to the Claremont Graduate University, “Salary negotiation is the process of reaching an agreement on what an organization will pay for your skills, knowledge, and experience. Contrary to popular belief, this is not an adversarial process. It is both the organization’s and your best interest to come to a mutually beneficial agreement.” When deciding if you should negotiate your salary, there are a variety of do’s and don’ts. First off, always do your research. When it comes time to researching you want to research the salaries for positions that are similar to yours. Basically, know what your worth is. As stated by “12 Dos and Don 'ts for Negotiating Salary in a Tough Economy” written by Dawn Dugan, when it comes to the don’ts for the research step she states, “Don 't assume that salary and/or benefits aren 't negotiable in this type of economy. Most organizations -- about 80 percent, in fact -- expect negotiations and leave themselves some wiggle room.” Next, you want to make a good impression. During your interview, you do want to spend a lot of time on getting to know the employer and also asking questions. Do not start your interview talking about your salary and benefits. As claimed by, “5 Salary Negotiation Tips that Work,” by Jerome Young, “There’s an old saying “The first person to bring up money, loses.” Starting a discussion about salary prematurely sends a signal
“But most people have multifaceted interests and abilities and could probably be successful and happy in several fields,” notes McCoy. Reasoning with options, interests, and abilities provides a wide range of career paths and prevents one from becoming limited to a simple passion or love desired career path. When one is reasonable with abilities and interests in different career options, it is easier to find a career especially in the economy of the United States today. Susanne Peckham states, “During the past couple of years, college graduates have faced a very challenging job market.”(Peckham.2011) This elaborates on McCoys questioning of the commencement speakers advice to students to ‘Do What You Love’ during such a “tough labor market” (McCoy.2013). Reasoning with one's interests and options leads to a well thought out career path that provides what one needs to make an
