Most individuals wouldn 't view Up, a family friendly Disney movie, as a movie of death and rebirth, but it occurs multiple times throughout the movie. The beginning of the film introduces us to the life of Carl and Ellie, two children who grow up with the image of 'adventure ' in their minds, an adventure which leads them to “Paradise Falls”, and a place that makes an interesting connection with the biblical place of “Paradise”. As their time line zips by, we discover that Ellie has become pregnant and miscarried, and as their child is mourned, they are slowly reborn through the nursery and the image of Paradise Falls in the background. We are introduced to Theo, a man who we discover once had a son with a woman named Julian, whom is now leading pro-immigration rebel groups named Fishes. Theo 's death and rebirth occurs through Key, the refugee Julian has brought to him. Theo approaches Key in a barn/manger where he attempts to leave her and the Fishes behind and she drops her gown to show her pregnant belly. Theo decides that he must get her to the Human Project to keep her and her baby safe and is reborn as her protector. In our class reading by Paxton, we are told the importance of fertility in Greece is the “authentically Greek” children the government wants their citizens to have, and so minority children are not counted towards the growth rate of the country. (Paxton 150-151). This problem also makes an appearance in Children of Men; as one of the “Fishes” states - “The government would never acknowledge that the first human birth in 18 years is a (re)fugee 's baby” (Cuarón, Children of Men). Because of this point, a lot of suffering is endured by Theo to hide the appearance of Key 's baby because she is not “authentically British”, or even a British citizen. We can also understand this through Edelman 's explanation in No Future: “the future of the child is the future of a nation... if there is a child, there is hope, there is redemption.”
