Starbucks was founded in 1971 on March 30, by three partners. All three partners met while students in University; English Teacher Jerry Baldwin, History teacher Zev Siegl, and writer Gordon Bowker. All three were inspired by Business man and entrepreneur, Alfred Peet, who had been in the roasting business some time and was known for high Quality roasts at affordable prices. Originally the company was to be named Pequod, after the ship mentioned in the children’s classic book, Moby Dick, however the name was later rejected by some of the co-founders. The name Starbuck was agreed on by taking the name of Chief Mate Starbuck from The story Moby Dick. The first Starbucks Café was opened Seattle, 2000 Western Avenue. During the time of opening however only roasted beans were sold, as well as purchasing beans from pre-mentioned mentor “Peet”. After the first year however they expanded and started buying beans from growers.

The Starbucks logo has been changed three times from fou7nding in 1971 through to the present. The logo is of a twin tailed mermaid known as a siren from Greek mythology. Starbucks human resources and environmental resources has made it clear the general public that it intends to maintain a constant safe and fair work environment. They are responsible in their purchasing of raw ingredients, support farmers loans, plus being involved in nature conservation programs, with the goal in mind to have all cups( by 2015 ) to all be re-usable and recyclable. A new green initiative has just been put in place making sure this all happens with the benefit of green construction.
