Both John Henry Newman and Jon Spayde argue the true meaning of a University education in their works titled “The Idea of a University” and “Learning in the Key of Life.” Newman defines a truly effective education as a liberal one. He believes that “The University’s art is the art of social life, and its end is fitness for the world” (47). Similar to Newman’s belief that a well-rounded education is necessary, Spayde also agrees that “Humanities are the foundation for getting along in the world, for thinking and for learning to reflect on the world instead of just simply reacting to current events” (60). It is certain, therefore, that a university education cannot be solely based on an academic concentration, but also has to offer the skills needed to produce well-rounded and diverse individuals in society. Hence a university education is essential to provide people with not only the professional, but also the spiritual, and social skills needed to live a successful life.
Any person who wants to be successful in life has to have a strong academic background, consisting of a certain specialization. A university is an institution that allows people to make such choices and develop their skills towards careers involving such majors. The advantage of this type of specialized system is the unique skill in that particular field a person learns and develops. Such refined qualities needed to be comfortable in a career allow one to be much more productive than someone who is not educated within a university. In addition, these skills boost one’s status on finding a highly paying professional job. Finally, a university education, in order to be effective, is not one that offers only the specialized skills to succeed in one branch of knowledge. A true edification consists of not only the facts, but also the spiritual attachment to them, and the ability to interact and work around them. Civil Disobedience, as stated in the prompt, is the act of opposing a law one considers unjust and peacefully disobeying it while accepting the consequences. Many people believe this has a negative impact on the free society because they believe civil disobedience can be dangerous or harmful. Civil disobedience does not negatively affect the free society in a dangerous manner because it is peaceful and once it becomes harmful to the free society then it is not civil disobedience. Thoreau believed civil disobedience is an effective way of changing laws that are unjust or changing things that as a society and to the people does not seem correct. This peaceful act of resistance positively impacts a free society. Some examples are Muhammad Ali peacefully denying the draft and getting arrested. These men believed that what they saw was wrong and they did something about it but they did it peacefully.
Wendell Berry, an American novelist, shares his thoughts on education in the article, “The Loss of the University.” In this article, he talks about the disciplines of education in universities, and how the modern university has grown, but not according to the principle of education. He uses an example of a tree which stands for education and the branches, which establish the liberal arts. The trunk stands for the major and the branches are the classes that support your major. For example my major is HES which is the trunk and the branches will be be biology, chemistry and speech classes these classes support what I do for my major. In Garrett Hardin’s “ Lifeboat Ethics: The Case against Helping the Poor,” Hardin argues that we should not aid the poor because there is only a limited amount of resources available, and it can become a threat to everyone if the population growth of the poor keeps increasing and if our limited resources keep decreasing. Hardin cleverly uses a lifeboat metaphor to set up his argument by putting the reader into a life or death situation. He places the rich people inside of the boat which only has a limited amount of space and the poor are placed outside of the lifeboat stranded in the water. Hardin convinces readers that the only way for survival is if the rich let the poor suffer. However, in Alan Durning’s “Asking How Much Is Enough,” Durning states that the real reason why our resources keep dwindling is because the rich are carelessly over consuming them. Unlike Hardin, Durning includes three world classes the rich, the middle, and the poor. Durning brings in the middle class which gives the reader a more realistic picture to realize that the overconsumption of the rich is just making the poor, poorer. Hardin fails to even mention the middle class or overconsumption because he only wants the reader to focus on the overpopulation of the poor. Durning exposes Hardin’s rhetoric by stating that the rich are the ones who are carelessly over consuming their own resources and how Hardin falsely demonizes the poor by making it easier to blame them for abusing our limited resources.

In the Theory of Justice by John Rawls, he defines civil disobedience,” I shall begin by defining civil disobedience as a public, nonviolent, conscientious yet political act contrary to law usually done with the aim of bringing about a change in the law or policies of the government”.
The use of civil disobedience is a respectable way of protesting a governments rule. When someone believes that they are being forced into following unjust laws they should stand up for what they believe in no matter the consequences because it is not just one individual they are protesting for they are protesting for the well-being of a nation. Thoreau says ?to resist, the government, when its tyranny or its inefficiency are great and unendurable.? People should only let wrong and right be governed by what they believe not the people of the majority. The public should always stand for what is right, stand when they think a government is wrong, and trust in their moral beliefs.

Students learn how to communicate, treat people with different beliefs, and interpret their opinions. They cannot be easily fooled by others who use manipulative language. In other words, a higher education will create a better and more organized society, which will benefit the present students and future generations.
Every experience we go through will, in some way or another, help each of us to develop understanding. Coming of age is a life-long journey, but there are major events or experiences you can go through that will play an important part in become an adult. As time goes by, we will all experience trials, blessings, heartache, joy, and love; each of these periods in our lives will have an extraordinary impact upon who we become.
