A Trip to the Roman Theatre
Morning at last! I have been waiting for this day for so long. Today
is March the 15th. Today is the day when the whole of Italy will
celebrate the festival of Anna Perenna -the goddess of the year. I
love festivals, because everyone is on holiday and all the citizens
are forbidden to work or do business. I am thrilled because I am going
to the theatre to see a play. I am very fortunate that my father has
paid for the actors and producers to perform the play and he has also
paid for the scenery and costumes. As well as this he has paid for all
the citizens of Pompeii to come and watch the play. My father has
given my mother and me a special token, which entitles us to sit on
seats, which have been reserved especially for us, the tokens also
enable us to go through a special entrance at the side of the theatre.
I regularly go to the amphitheatre with my mother and father to see
gladiatorial fights. We all find gladiatorial fights very
entertaining, as they are aggressive and unpredictable. My favourite
gladiator is Pugnax and my father's favourite is Pubilius Ostiorus. We
often go to the amphitheatre to watch gladiatorial fights, but we have
never been to the theatre to see a play before.

my best shawl. Then I want you to do my make up carefully; put on my
best powder rouge and mascara. After that, bring me my precious pearl
bracelet and put my hair up in my favourite jewelled hairpins. Please

to look stunning."

I really enjoyed the play and pantomime. I enjoyed the show at the
theatre more than I enjoy the gladiatorial fights at the amphitheatre.
I would love to go to the theatre again and watch another play by
Titus Maccius Plautus.

On March 31 I had the pleasure of seeing Hello Dolly at Mandeville High School. As a talented theater student at the school, I take the shows that are put on very seriously. Being involved in the show, helping make set pieces, and working box office brings light to me as an individual, every little helping hand counts. Myth and reality are so closely intertwined that we would be remiss to examine the one without the other.? From a cluster of humble villages, arose a mighty people who would capture the admiration of the world for centuries thereafter.? To look at the history of Rome is to look at the history of civilization itself, for with Rome, modern civilization began.
The Roman Republic began in 509 B.C.E. with the overthrow of the Etruscan monarchy. In 27 B.C.E the Roman Empire began with Octavian Caesar becoming the emperor, this ended almost 500 years of republican self-government. There is much debate over why Rome became so powerful so quickly. Many think it had to do with Rome’s military strength. Others think that it was because Rome knew of and controlled most of the trade routes. Still others believed it had to do with the technology that was advanced during the Roman Republic. All of these factors played significant roles, but which one played the most important role?

Well the Colosseum was the only way where people from Rome, Italy were able to go for entertainment. One of the basic elements of theatrical production is costumes. In Oedipus the King, a 1984 movie adaptation of a prominent tragedy written by Sophocles in 429 BC, costumes provide a unique feel and version. The tragedy follows a tragic hero named Oedipus, who seeks to find the truth about the murderer of the late king, Laius. Unbeknownst to him, he is the murderer of his own father and marries his mother, Iokasta. Costume design in the movie offers an important meaning to the play. Each character’s costume suggests which class they are from, what they symbolize, and altogether imply what time or era the tragedy is set in.
With the decline and fall of the western empire, the classical age of Rome came to a close as disease, warfare and corruption conspired to bring about the downfall of an ailing empire that had once conquered the known world. Where once enlightened despots had ruled a debauched and unwieldy polity, now barbarians stood over the ruins of a once thriving metropolis. In its absence a new world would arise with new values and ideals. Turning their back on a pagan past the Christian children of these wild men from the north would spawn the greatest houses of future European nobility, and when they looked back for a legacy, they would not see their ancestors as pillagers picking at the bones of a defiled Rome, but instead as its trusted guardians, partnering with the Church to carry her legacy through the “Dark Ages”.
Rome contributed to major cultural advancements that transform cultural heritages and legacy through major attributes. Romans influenced groups and societies that history transpired to generations that came after the Roman era. Speaking of Rome has an essence in its own right when uttering the name “Rome” my mind automatically thinks of regal, royalty, power, and leadership. If this semester didn’t teach me anything it taught me the importance and significant of our history and how Rome is at forefront of making it all possible. The evidence of Rome’s nostalgic, historic input is evident throughout Europe, North America, Asia, and Africa.
Elizabethan times in the 1600s was a progression for the world of the theater. A period named after Queen Elizabeth I of England, it is from this period that modern day society has its foundation for the entertainment industry. From the violence that was prevalent because of the Black Death, people turned to the theater for its poetry and romance. During this time period, there were two types of theatrical performances that were available for the people’s viewing, comedies or tragedies. These two genres were never really intertwined until the time of William Shakespeare. His play, Romeo and Juliet, is an example of both a comedy and a tragedy. It starts off as a comedy with Romeo weeping like a baby because of his love Rosaline, who did not love him back and ends as a tragedy when Romeo and Juliet, a pair of star crossed lovers, commit suicide because the lost of each other. It was also during Shakespeare’s time that writer were finally acknowledged by the people. Before this time, writers were not considered upper classman. Another group of people that began to rise into a higher social class were the actors. Actresses were not present back then because women were not allowed on stage. It was considered unladylike to have a female actor. Men played all the parts. Theater owners were dependent on actors to make them a profit. Rehearsals for the plays were fairly short, only lasting for about a week. The performances themselves would only show for three to four days.
