Time Travel
First of all, to give you a better concept of time I will use a personal theory of mine. When you look up at the sky at night, at the stars, what are you seeing? Do you think that collage of stars actually exists? Most of them do not. When you look at the sky at night you are seeing the past because it takes an obscene amount of time for the light from those stars to reach earth, and in that time those stars may have disappeared.
It works both ways. When an inhabitant, if there is one, on a planet around the star that you are looking at looks at our sun he is also seeing the past. So here we are, at the main idea of my speech - the possibility of different times and time travel.
The main question here is: How do you connect these 2 times? Well, the key is to go faster than the speed of light, which is 186,283 miles per second - or about the same as driving around the earth seven times in one second. If you have a hard time comprehending that going faster will connect 2 times I can put it more simply: motion slows time. This was proven in 1971.
In that year American physicists took 4 atomic clocks, left 2 on the ground, and put each of the others in airplanes flying in opposing directions around the earth at 621 mph. When the planes returned, the scientists were delighted to find that the clocks from the planes were a few billionths of a second slower than the ones left on ground. (theage.com.au)
Unfortunately, according to Einstein (who has yet to be disproved), you cannot go the speed of light because whatever solid object you used to do this (i.e.: spacecraft) would create a vortex behind it that would drag all matter... planets, stars, galaxies, etc. To put this into perspective think of when ...

Dr. Preston has two solutions to this. The first is that you cannot alter the course of history, so the time traveler would have endless mishaps in trying to kill his grandmother. The second is that when he killed her he immediately creates a parallel universe in which the young grandmother never existed and where he was never born, but our original universe remains.
Time travel seems to be something for only the Sci Fi movies, but it could have been invented in the future and the course of history has already been changed. As we sit here right now, all of our feelings, thoughts, and memories could have just been reset and we are in a different universe. Neither you nor I would have any recollection of it.
If you have ever read Einstein's Dreams, you can appreciate my dilemma. If you have not yet had the opportunity to experience this wonderful novel by Alan Lightman, I guarantee that after you read it you will expand your perception of the nature of time and of human activity. The novel is enchanting. It is a fictional account of what one of the greatest scientific minds dreams as he begins to uncover his theory of relativity.

If a two-way communicator existed across time for this to be achieved the two metaphysical considerations must be met. Firstly, Lewis highlights the that “time is one dimension of four”, in the fourth-dimensional world, suggesting that time is just as perceptible as any place and potentially where the time traveller will send the message. What is time? Is time travel possible? When nothing is changing does time still exits ? Is that really true? Are you real? Metaphysics is a branch of philosophy that is significant to us when questions and other clams bring curiosity about whether things are real or not.
Octavia Butler’s novel, Kindred, is categorized as science fiction because of the existence of time travel. This novel correlates with Gunn’s definition because it connects with the fact that Dana, a 26-year old-American woman, travels from the future where she lives in California, to the past in Maryland. She traveled from the year of 1976 to the year of 1815. Some may think that time travel is impossible, but the article, Time Travel and Changing the Past: (Or How to Kill Yourself and Live to Tell the Tale) written by G.C Goddu says otherwise. He states, “not only is time travel possible, but so is changing the world” (Goddu 17). He also uses a model to explain why he think that time travel is possible. He uses some examples to prove this. His first example, Paul at 32-years old, leaves from February 12, 1998, for the past and touches base on January 28, 1972. One way which we speak, experience and conceive of time is that time is something that flows or passes from the future to the present and from the present to the past. When viewed in this way, events which are present have a special existential status. Whatever may be the case with regard to the reality or unreality of events in the future and the past, events that are in the present exist with a capital 'E'. It can then be postulated that it is the 'present' or 'now' that shifts to even later times. If events in time (or moments of time) are conceived in terms of past, present and future, or by means of the tenses, then they form what McTaggart called the A-series (from which the A-theory of time is derived). This type of change is commonly referred to as 'temporal becoming', and gives rise to well known perplexities concerning both what does the shifting and the type of shift involved, which we will discuss later.
At a glance, the concept of time travel seems absurd. Yet given some thought, you realise the metaphorical wall between the past, present, and future is smaller than you think. Light travels at a constant velocity of about 300,000 km/s. It is common knowledge that nothing can travel faster than that speed (as I will prove later on) and therefore because your eyes are sensitive to visible light – everything you see is a light wave in some form. Because of this finite velocity of light, if we observe a star, say Alpha Centauri 4 – which is 4 light years away – we do not see it as it looks today, but as it looked 4 years ago! If you look at the Andromeda Galaxy – 2 million light years away – you see it as it appeared 2 million years ago. Just as when you look at yourself in a mirror – 1.5 metres away – the image you see of yourself is not you now, but you 10 nanoseconds ago (0.00000001s)2. In other words, you look into the past every moment of your life.
Assume that somebody has successfully traveled back in time. What if this person met their grandfather years before he met the to-be grandmother and the time traveler decides to kill his grandfather? We see the universe because we are who we are, and where we are. That is the only reason we can question the facts of our existence. Sometimes we answer questions that were never supposed to be addressed. Space-time has always been in question. Time travel would give mad unlimited powers. One could act as god, change the world the way He wanted. If the outcome did not meet satisfaction, then travel back in time and re-work the problem until satisfaction. With our primitive ways and violent acts, why would we give ourselves this weapon of infinite power? Maybe that is why we have not been told of how to build a time machine. However, the people in the future didn’t think. If they have created a time machine and are hiding it from us, then eventually we will stumble upon this discovery, since we are their past!
Back to the Future is a science fiction film that shows that time travel is possible. Back to the Future shows that time has a place in a different era can play a big part in how things are brought to light. The films point of view is, a boy with a friend that invents time travel, boy sent back in time, friend helps him get back. The major theme I am going to speak about is time and how it ties in to the movie. The whole movie is about time so why not start the movie off with a room full of clocks. Marty enters the room full of clocks, the sound of tick tock tick tock fills the speakers. Meeting Doc at the mall to introduce the time machine was a very important scene in the movie. Throught the back to the future movies there has been many changes that occured between each time period. The First movie happened between 1955 to 1985 and the second movie was about going to the 2015 future. During the events of the first movie the protagonist Marty Mcfly goes to 1955 from 1985 where he witnesses his father and mother as high school teenagers. Everything seems new to him.

Time Travel has always struck close to the imagination of the minds. From H.G. Wells ' "The Time Machine" to blockbuster films like "Back to the Future" - for years, time travel was the stuff of science fiction and crazy-eyed mad men but as physicists approach the subject of time travel with new advances in scientific theories and equipment, the possibility of time travel has become a more legitimate field for scientific endeavours. This paper will argue the possibility of time travel and the positive effects that this discovery will bring forth to modern day society: technological advancements.
