A Tragedy Unfolded

The Lusitania was destroyed in the same was as the Titanic as they could not pull the boats into the sea and water kept rushing into the hull through the front where the torpedo hit as the boat couldn’t be stopped.The Lusitania was torpedoed by the German submarine U-20 on May 7, 1915. 1198 people died of a total of 1959 people on the boat. The ship sunk in 18 minutes. Second most famous passenger liner after the Titanic. It was destroyed 8 miles from the coast of Old head of Kinsale, Ireland.

At the time of impact, the Titanic was traveling at approximately 21 knots, almost top speed. (Streissguth) Another major decision that contributed to the amount of lives lost was the fact that there were not enough lifeboats for all the customers to be safely placed in. The Captain of the Titanic was now forced with some very tough decisions.

It was a problem because Cunard Lines, the maker of these two luxury ships, was White Star Lines’ only competition. By the time dinner was over they had made up a plan to build three ‘Olympic’ class ships. These ships would be fifteen hundred gross tons larger and about one hundred feet longer than the Lusitania and the Mauretania. The building of the Titanic and the Olympic were to start immediately, with the Britannic to follow in the coming years. On July 29, 1908 White Star owners approved the design plan for the three ships.

On March 31st 1909 the largest passenger ship was being created, called The Titanic. The White Star Line built the Titanic as a weapon to their enemy, Cunard. Cunard was another shipbuilding company that built ships like the Lusitania and the Mauretania, which set speed records crossing the Atlantic Ocean. White Star Line built the Titanic for her comforts and luxury rather than her speed. The Titanic was created in 1912, at a price of 7.5 million dollars in Northern Ireland. It took more than two years to build up the Titanic and while her construction, two workers died.

What if you were in the middle of the sea on a sinking ship, what would you do? Many would go straight to the crew on the ship for guidance but on the Titanic, only a few of the crew members knew what to do during an emergency. On the 15th of April in 1912, the Titanic, a first class ship sunk with only 705 survivors out of the 2,200 passengers on board. The captain of the ship, Edward John Smith, crashed into a huge iceberg because it seemed to be small above water. The water began to flood the ship and a few hours later, the ship sunk.

None of them realized yet that by the time the first hours of daylight came, the Titanic would be gone, along with two-thirds of her passengers and crew. When the passengers realized their impending doom, it was already too late: lifeboats had been launched. After the sinking of the Titanic, many people believed it was simple bad fortune and found no legal negligence. Many have argued since the sinking about what the actual major factors were for the loss of lives on this ship. The major loss of lives on the Titanic is due to a combination of improper precautionary methods, poor weather conditions, and poor response overall to the situation.

It has been more than a century since the Royal Mail Steamer, Titanic, met its tragic ending the Atlantic Ocean, during its voyage to America. Instead of reaching New York, its final destination was in the deep ocean on April 15, 1912. Titanic’s creators believed the ship was “unsinkable” ship and could not be defeated by the laws of nature (Ryan 28). This boldness explains the emotional impact the sinking had on the public. There was a disbelief that the ship could have sunk due to slow and unreliable communication.

TITANIC This paper will be about the sinking of the R.M.S. Titanic. Some people call this sinking the greatest maritime disaster. It wasn't just the fact that the ship sank, but also all the different circumstances that caused this ship to sink and take so many lives. In the time period of 1900's-1915's many things happened.

There seems to be a conflict on whether or not the warnings reached the bridge. We may never know the answer to this question.
