In the article ,“A Tale of Two summers for Parents” written by Belinda Luscombe, It’s main focus was to inform us about two mothers who had to leave their children ,somewhere unsafe without any parental supervision. Belinda chosen the side where she doesn’t find it a big deal “ I left her some money this morning and told her to have a nice day. If anyone wants me to arrest me, I’ll probably be a McDonald’s getting her some dinner”. She also mention Deborah Harrell ,who left her 9 year old daughter at a nearby park while she went to work, Shanesha Taylor ,who left two toddlers in her car on a hot sunny day when she went for an interview, both of the parents have gone into custody for their awful actions. By this information she meant that it’s harder to make time for their children and still put food on the table with lower their income. Most jobs who pay little or more disposable workers they really can’t fail task ,or miss more days than they need to or they most likely get fired. Belinda’s facts are not wrong, I agree with her in this portion of her statement in her article. Being a mother isn’t the easiest thing to do when you have to handle a delicate job and children. It’s easy to not think of the bad situations but it's better to be safe than sorry in most cases. This doesn’t mean to just forget that your children need somebody older to be safe and to not have a feeling of panic. In conclusion, my side is to do the best thing for your children, and ask for help we all have somebody in our life who would love to take care of your children. If your children got kidnapped you would never forgive yourself why not start fixing that

However, some single parents are able to rely on their social networks to provide free or below-market-cost childcare. There are also some free childcare options provided by the government, such as the Head Start Program. However, low-wage jobs force workers to accept irregular schedules for these free options, only which are available during certain hours, which can limit parents ' ability to take jobs that require late-night shifts. In which in this situation, it causes it to be even more difficult for a single low wage parent to receive free childcare. In fact, some employers will not hire someone unless they have "open availability," which means being available to work any time, any day. This makes it difficult for workers to arrange for childcare and to take on a second job. Welfare reform caused many families surviving with the help of the government to go out and look for jobs despite their need for childcare that they could not afford. Barbara Ehrenreich, a journalist with a PhD, decided to find out how life would be like living on minimum wage labor. During her journey, we see that labor has not changed majorly because laborers are not paid fairly and they are declined their rightfully owned rights. Although women are allowed in the workplace, an eight hour work day is established, and we have a minimum wage, many are still struggling to make it because the system simply does not work unless you are running the show.

Child hunger is a major struggle for many families. The article “School's Out for the Summer”, by Anna quindlen explains when school is let out for the summer there is less food for the kids who need it. The problem is we don’t recognize that this is happening within our country.
In the documentary Babies, babies from across the world were filmed interacting with their mothers and the new world. One of the babies was from Namibia. This baby was given little guidance and attention while parents seemed absent at times. At one point, the viewers see the infant smashing rocks together, by himself, which isn’t exactly the safest activity for a toddler (4). The children raised by this type of passive parenting with “few rules, expectations, and demands, tend to struggle with self-regulation and self-control” (5). Without someone teaching children morals and with no form of structure in a child's life, they will have trouble depicting right and wrong decisions. The under the involved parenting style may often seem neglectful, however, there is a fine line between the two. In the memoir The Glass Castle, Rex and Rose are the parents of four kids. Throughout the book, Jeanette is the victim of several sexual misconducts. When confronting her mom about her Uncle Stanley groping her, Rose says “"Poor Stanley," she said. "He's so lonely.”.... “sexual assault was a crime of perception. If you don't think you're hurt, then you aren't,"” (6). Deborah Harrell is a hardworking mother who works at McDonald's but left her nine year old daughter alone at the park. She was taken to custody, some might think this is unlawful others might think it is lawful. In this article “A Tale of Two Summers For Parents” written by Belinda Luscombe argues that Deborah Harrell did nothing wrong. I have to disagree with Luscombe, Deborah Harrell left her daughter in the park for several hours and that is just unacceptable. I understand why Harrell had to do it but that doesn’t change the fact that she left her daughter alone and she was very lucky nothing horrible had happened to her daughter.
Close to 60% of children in the united states, who are living in a single mother family are impoverished. However, only 11% of two parent families are in poverty. This is very important because there are close to approximately 10,000,000 single mother families in the united states, and if 60% of those are in poverty, then close to 6,000,000 families are in poverty in the U.S. because they have a single mother. This is an issue because that is a lot of people living in poverty. If women don't get paid enough because of their lower paying jobs and the wage gap, then it is almost impossible to raise children while being a single mother. Also, many parents take time off of their work to take care of their children. Single parents usually have to take more time off of their work to take care of their child. However, this is difficult for salaries. An article about parenting says , “Some large or family-friendly companies employees six paid weeks of maternity leave, but many do not.”. This is an issue. IF mothers, specifically single mothers are not paid while taking care of their children, then it is way harder to stay above the poverty line. Children already cost a lot of extra money for two parent families, and if single mothers take time off to take care of their kids without any pay, then that makes the poverty problem
Have you ever thought what can cause a significant change in someone’s life? In the story “An American Childhood” the author notice that her parents do not have an interest in what she is doing so she developed her own interest.In paragraph 12 the author states “I had essentially been handed my own life.In subsequent years my parents would praise my drawings, poems and supplies.” the author was stating she had to do stuff by herself.

There are frequent footnotes in the novel, many of them containing statistics about low-wage lifestyles. One claims that “In 1997, a living wage for a single parent supporting a single child in the Twin Cities metro area was $11.77 an hour” (Ehrenreich 127). Throughout the novel, Ehrenreich never gets paid this much in any of her jobs. In fact, she is amazed when a potential wage for a job is “not $8.50 but an incredible $10 an hour” (Ehrenreich 142). Even living on her own Ehrenreich could hardly pay for the basic necessities to live, it would have been impossible to do so with a child to care for as well. Another statistic stats that “Nearly one-fifth of all homeless people (in twenty-nine cities across the nation) are employed in full- or part- time jobs” (Ehrenreich 26). This fact shows the flaws in the low-wage workforce. After all, minimum wage is meant to be designed to be able to support people with necessities such as shelter and food, yet 20% of those without homes cannot afford shelter with these wages. Through these statistic, ehrenreich is able to establish that it is nearly impossible to live a decent lifestyle with just low-wage job
Mothers go through all sorts of stress. While parenting can be overwhelmingly stressful, it’s important to consider the possible implications of our actions and how our responses to situations can affect how our children feel physically and mentally. Recent research (2014) has investigated some aspects of how a mother’s physical response to a stressful situation could effect her infant. Knowing that infants can indirectly pick up a mother’s personal reaction can keep a mother aware of her actions and ultimately provide better care for the infant.
Lifestyle choices also contribute to the difference in wages. Many women are willing to devote more of their time and attention to parenting rather than their professions. Consequently, women who choose to divide their time between work and their family life will undoubtedly earn less. In fact, women ages 27-33 who have no children actually earn 98 percent of men’s wages according to the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth. 1
In today’s society many grow up in a single parent household and it may effect some different than other’s. For instance you can look at the percentage of race and how it affects each. For one can look at a black family and see the effects it has on them. Black families are in the high percentage range of growing up in a single parent home. The outcome has little effect on than that of a white family. Not all black families are single parent homes, but the ones that are may be due to parent killed, in prison, or just do not know who their father’s. To compare to a white family growing up in a single parent house can have a higher effect. White families may experience being in a single parent household due to parents getting divorced or death.
The wage gap between men and women is widely recognized, however there also exists a gap between mothers and women without children. While full-time working women without children earn 7 percent less than their male colleagues, mothers earn 23 percent less (Nelson 20). Even after controlling factors such as education, work commitment, and timing of return to the workforce after giving birth, working mothers earn 3% to 5% less than women without children (Miner et al. 60).
