For the past five years my grandmother has asked one simple question, "When are you going to learn how to cook?" According to my grandmother, women have the obligation to cook for their husbands. Although my grandmother 's reason is valid, my answer is fairly simple, "I do not want to cook." It’s clear that my response provokes frustration for my grandmother, this difference of opinion has the power to create family feud. According, to Cesar [my boyfriend], "Your grandmother is right, it’s essential that you learn how to cook”. However, her reasons are wrong, you should learn how to cook for yourself and not for anyone else." Gender expectation is designed to categorize activities according to a genders capability. This short story has contradicting ideas, which made it difficult to relate to. There is well-defined distinction between Sandra’s father and my fathers ' belief of what daughters should pursue and become. Cisneros father believed that, " college was good for girls- good for finding a husband (377)," it gives the impression that it isn 't about finding her success, but rather relying on another person [man] success. Unlike my father 's belief, he encourages an education and personal success. Gender expectation is seen in the life of Cisneros and myself, as our fathers impose their ideas of what we are meant to become in life. Hence, gender expectations can also be seen in how society portrays males and females behavior. A women 's behavior is much more punished as opposed to a male’s behavior. Women are classy and sophisticated, so they are expected to behave properly. Society has the habit of judging women, because they don 't behave appropriately. Women are criticized, gossiped about and given hateful names. In contrast to a man 's behavior, women suffer more often compared to males because they are expected to behave according to societies
