In 2009, the Obama Administration announced the Educate to Innovate initiative as a way to provide “students at every level to with the skills they need to excel in the high-paid, highly-rewarding rewarding fields of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM)” (The White House). Part of the President’s goal is to support or recruit real world experienced teachers in the hopes to form creative, hands on teaching methods; elements that are crucial to a student’s success in STEM subjects. Jobs in computing, engineering, physical sciences, and mathematics are projected to grow in demand within the next decade. Consequently, Obama also aims to encourage more students to get involved in science degrees. However, nearly half of the students with ambition of futures in science, switch majors. In an effort to improve the way science is taught, teachers should interest students with current research topics to equip them with real world critical thinking skills and focus more on a student’s success in these areas and less on test scores.
The strenuous difficulty of STEM courses is the most prevalent reason why students give-up on their science degree. Students become discouraged when acknowledging the grades received in discussion based classes like history are much higher than classes genetics classes which are memorizing facts and test oriented. Critical thinking skills are vital in these fields of study, and while learning what previous scientist have accomplished is important, it isn’t the best way to achieve the ability. More hands on projects lead by real world experienced professors would keep students interested and inspired. Claudia Dreifus asked nineteen students, scientists, and educators how they would improve the way sci...

...physics, and especially chemistry can over-tax and discourage us, but it’s an extremely awarding degree. Science is intimidating and is often taken for granted, but science, technology, engineering, and math are essential to the advancement of humanity. Some see Obama’s Educate to Innovate as hopeful wishing. Experienced teachers teaching current topics in science and providing students with more hands on opportunities in a definitive step in the right direction, but more has to be taking into account in order truly tackle the obstacle.

does such a deficit of women in technological industries still exist? According to researcher Amanda L. Griffith, only 21% of women entering college plan to major in a science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) field and few of those women actually attain a degree in a STEM field (915). Although young women are not explicitly discouraged from pursuing these careers – as evidenced by the presence of women at Missouri University of Science and Technology – they are continually bombarded with
Due to the fact that most generations follow the class that they are born into, does not mean their “family values” are lessened of other classes. The culture of poverty holds true if people who are raised on welfare believe that it is best to remain on welfare verse seeking employment to better them and make a living to support their families. Labor markets affect poverty levels because as there are fewer opportunities available for people to achieve jobs when the market is down, the number of Americans
Yes, when thinking about social classes in the Unites States, it is easier to gravitate towards the differences among them. However, through reading about the different families in Unequal Childhoods, there are similarities across social classes. One of the similarities among the middle, working, and poor class is the “absent” of parental involvement. Now, this also depends on how the reader views the situation. For the poor class or working class families, such as Katie Brindle and Tyrec Taylor

government contractors to take “affirmative action to ensure that applicants are employed, and that employees are treated during employment, without regard to their race, creed, color, or national origin.1” Kennedy originally spoke of "affirmative steps" to prevent discrimination, suggesting general efforts to reach out to minority groups. However, the term is not defined or explained further; there is no indication that a specific policy was intended. Yet, by 1978, the first controversy in college
success for themselves. However, the meaning of success varies among individuals. One person might attend college for years in order to receive their Ph.D. while another may not even attend college. The American Dream model of success differs. The difference in responses is determined by the accessibility of opportunities such as attending college or getting an above minimum wage job. These opportunities are affected by a number of external factors such as class, race, and education level. Needless
Racial and Ethnic Healthcare Disparities in the US Racial and ethnic healthcare disparities, often defined as the difference in which socially disadvantaged racial and ethnic minorities experience worse health or greater health risks than more advantaged social groups1, has become a cause of concern as the US grows increasingly diverse. Quality healthcare access is already scarce amongst many Americans, but the effects are particularly apparent for minorities even within the greater context of groups

Another strategy is concentrated targeting, and this is done by finding a specific market segment and creating advertisements directed toward them. Additionally, each college uses an undifferentiated targeting trying to obtain as many new students as possible.
Re-emergence of interest in social history owes much to the work of a specific generation of British Marxist historians, amongst them E.P. Thompson and Christopher Hill. The Making of the English Working Class, by E.P. Thompson, was one of the most widely influential historical texts of the second half of the 20th century[][]. Published in 1963, this book was an influential, pivotal and enriching text which enlarged the conception
