John F. Kennedy once said, “No matter how big the lie; repeat it often enough and the masses will regard it as the truth.” In this age of information no one in history would ever believe how true this quote holds in these generations. Global ignorance is alarmingly prevalent among scholars and youth alike. This is a world of biased and exaggerated media, dated generalizations, and a school curriculum that teaches youth to believe rather than question and explore. Without the knowledge of the past, present, and future global patterns, the public relies on other people to think for them and are ignorant to the world they live in. This is also causing misconceptions of cultures; which is leading to false stereotyping and discrimination. When given thirty minutes to an hour of air time how much information about the world can really be covered? This has become an ignored question amongst the world today. Millions of people go about their day while hundreds if not thousands of events occur world wide. The majority of those who rightfully ignore the rest of the world to focus on their own lives will watch the news at the end of the day. This time is used to catch up on the daily events and the status of the world. A murder in the Bronx, a missing plane over Asian seas, and a center piece on the nation's foreign affairs with Russia are the types of stories being covered on the nightly news. Only so much of the world's problems and stories of nations can be told in an hour. No one in their right mind expects a single person to know everything about the world. Neil deGrasse Tyson, in The Sky is Not the Limit, is quoted saying, “there is no shame in not knowing. The problem arises when irrational thought and attendant behavior fill the va... ... middle of paper ... ...than ignorance in action.” Works Cited BBC. If it was not apparent enough that America’s education system is failing, Michael Moore’s “Idiot Nation” openly explains to us about the truth. America, for being the richest country, is behind in the educational standpoint. America needs to rethink their standards when it comes to education. America is more focused on corporate earning than educating our youth. The author of “Idiot Nation” makes the reader think about how America is viewed in the world. The purpose of Michael Moore’s essay is to point out what is wrong with this nation and also give the reader the motivation to actually do something about the situation at hand. Moore is trying to make readers aware of where we send our children. The author is trying to shock readers with the facts to do something to improve the American education system.

Joel Best’s Damned Lies and Statistics is a book all about recognizing statistics that are legitimate and others that are really quite horrible. The goal of this book is not that the average every day person be able to read a statistical table from a scholarly journal, but rather that anyone could personally value a statistic he or she may come across in a newspaper article or on a news program. Best was essentially effective in achieving his goal; however, he was effective to the point of overdoing his job of showing that there are bad statistics which give readers cause to evaluate them outside of hearing them on the news.
