A Short History of the Devil by Neil Mohammed
Horned gods were worshipped in Europe and the rest of the world from the dawn of humanity. They were always part of a pagan belief system, a polytheistic belief system, which accepted many gods. Tribal pagan belief systems still in existence share this characteristic: the tribes worship their tribal gods, and other gods mentioned by strangers are not evil, or non-existant, they are simply not their gods.
There were many ancient monotheistic religions such as Judaism, but again these were tribal religions, which had no urge to prosyletise, to "spread the word". Jehova was the god of the Jews, and they felt no need to persuade other tribes to worship him as well.
Christianity changed all that. It felt an overpowering need to make their one god the god of everybody else within range, and so they invented the missionary. But to do this it was necessary to discredit the old pagan gods, and in particular the goddess and the horned god.
Pagan pantheons never include gods of evil. Pagan gods are aspects of Nature, and in Nature there can be no evil; it exists only in the human imagination. They frequently include trickster gods, such as Loki, and gods can have a reputation for being unwise to be involved with, but not actual evil. Monotheistic religions, on the other hand, require a god of evil as an adversary of their god of good. Otherwise, why would you need Him? An obvious way to discredit the horned god and justify punishment of his worshippers is to say that he is, in fact, the god of evil in the new religion. And has been all along.
This did not happen all at once. For centuries Christianity existed alongside much older pagan beliefs all across Europe, and adapted to the people there and accomodated their beliefs as far as possible. The Celtic Christian Church in Dark Age Ireland is a typical example.
Then in AD 1248 Pope Innocent IV decided that it was time to suppress all heresy and for that purpose he founded The Holy Office, or as it later became better known, The Inquisition. It really took off in the fifteenth century (especially in Spain), and began rooting out all and any lingering traces of pagan belief.
Being an organization run entirely by men it took an instant dislike to the old wise women living around every country village, passing on ancient pagan folk-lore to the new generation and selling folk medicine and magic charms.
The Inquisition run by Tomas de Torquemada persecuted other religions and was a base of counter-reformation
The rose often represents love and ever-lasting beauty. Roses are often preserved after they die. Emily was denied a rose. Her father denied her suitors when she was young. Her town denied her suitors later. Homer Barron also denied her love because he saw himself as not the marrying kind of man. She refused, however, to give up her "rose" when she fell in love with Homer. She kept him in the only way that she could. She isolated herself from the world to keep him. The room she kept him in was rose colored. There was an indentation in the pillow where her head had lain. On the pillow was a long strand of iron gray hair. Her deep feelings and longings indented her heart like the indentation in the pillow. She controlled them the only way she knew how. She kept the man she loved from moving forward in time. She kept him in the past with her.
To test my hypothesis I am using the song “Voodoo Child (Slight Return)” by Jimi Hendrix from 1968 and data from the American National Election Study from 1964, 1968, and 1972. This song is full of sensory overload, or rather dynamization; which correlates to the fight against war in Vietnam and in return the fight against Democrats. In the data, I am using Party Identification as the dependant variable, age as the independent variable, and polling the years 1964, 1968, 1972 separately to analyze the before, during, and after affects of the counter culture movement. I define young as ages 17 to 24 in this test.
Gods and goddesses in mythology are used in allusions and often referred to in our daily lives, but do we truly understand them? We may not understand how or why they look the way they do, how they behave, what they are capable of accomplishing, or how they interacted with humans. These super-beings of extremely high status were the heart and soul of prayers and explanations of natural phenomena. They had a variety of natures and were represented in a variety of ways, by different religions.
An article from October 1982 “Fighting That Old Devil Rumor” by Sandra Salmans from the Saturday Evening Post talks about what Procter and gamble did to stop a rumor about them that would not go away back in 1982. What is the Purpose of this article though. The purpose is to show how fast rumors can spread, and what they can do to a company. It also shows that the company will fight back in order to keep a positive image, and to help dispense the rest of the rumor. If they are trying to dispense the rest of the rumor they are probably trying to reach adults who are 25 years and older , that are also married. In this respect of the attended audience this article succeeds. Salmans main points throughout this article get through to the intended audience, but more than that what Salmans says throughout the article helps as well. With those two points in mind that is what I use throughout this paper to analyze the article. One of the merits going for the article is when it provides an example of this rumor situation happening to another company. Then later on in the article when Procter and Gamble take charge and start suing people Salmans tells exactly who the people are. Back at the beginning of the article Salmans talks about all the different companies that Procter and Gamble own showing you how severe the situation was.
Christianity was first brought about by Jesus, who preached he was the son of God. After Jesus was hung on the cross and then resurrected one of his apostles, Paul, started the church. It first became popular in Jerusalem, and then continued to spread throughout the rest of the Middle-East, eventually reaching ...
Gods have existed almost since the beginning of mankind, as people had things that they worshiped such as the sun, the moon, and many other things. To me the Greeks had the most unique gods, because they had many gods for many different things such as love, war, etc. The gods were almost like human beings as they interacted in the lives of the people they watched over and the people they cherished. The gods were said to have mixed with the humans to make half mortal and half immortal people, blessed with certain powers. Today we all have one god, because it is the way we were brought up, but there are many types of religions such as Christianity, Hinduism, etc. The Greek gods lived among the people on top of a huge mountain called Mt. Olympus. The Romans took over on the gods and gave them different names, but many of them had the same job or duty. There was a king of the gods and his name was Zeus he was god of the sky, and he had a wife and she was called Hera and her duty was to advise her king on the way to run things. Poseidon was a brother to Zeus and was god of the sea and all that lived under it and dared to cross it as he tested many a sailor. Hades another brother of Zeus ruled the underworld or hell. There are many other gods such as Athena, Aphrodite, Hephaetus, Hermes, Helios, etc. The Greeks loved their gods so they would build temples of worship, statues of praise, and many other things to support them. Today the world of Greek gods are portrayed on the motion picture screen in movies, and even in cartoons. Our belief of many of these gods is that they did not exist, but who do you know that lived in that time. Some conclusions are that they could have existed but the people we kno...
Western culture has lost the close connection to deities. People in American culture have such varied beliefs over such a large area that it makes it hard to have one communal way of worship for a specific religion. There are many different belief systems ...
The gods worshipped by the Norse people can be separated into two groups; the Aesir and the Vanir. The Aesir are the gods that hold the cosmos together and were the most commonly worshipped. The leader of these gods is Odin. (Infoplease.) He is the Allfather; the father of all gods, and the ancestor of many families in Northern Europe. He is also a war god. Although in our culture today he is portrayed as an honorable leader and battlefield commander, the Norse
When they arrived, they brought their beliefs with them, and with that, their gods. The old gods are changed in very different ways, changes for example, in their names, character, and so on. Such as Mr. Wednesday, he is now known as Mr. Wednesday. When he was first created by the Norse people he was the king of the gods, the all-father, Odin, was the most well known of the over 170 names associated with him, from mercury to wōđanaz to even Óðinsdagr. The god in Norse mythology of a multitude of things: knowledge, sorcery, death, royalty, runic alphabet, healing, battle, poetry, frenzy, and the gallows. He was first derived from the roman god, mercury, in the 1st century. He then became widely accepted as a god among much of Europe, though he takes a much higher role in the Norse texts. A great majority of texts mentioning Odin, were Norse and from around the 13th century. Just as Odin was in the old European religions, Mr. Wednesday takes an particularly crucial role in American Gods, the role of the ringleader. He is preoccupied with gathering and joining the old gods into an army to finish the war that has begun with the new gods
Symbolism in literature is using an object to portray a different, deeper meaning in a story. Symbols represent ideas or qualities that the author has maneuvered into his or her story that has meaning. There can be multiple symbols in a story or just one. It is up to the reader to interpret the meaning of the symbols and their significance to the story. While reading a story, symbols may not become clear until the very end, once the climax is over, and the falling action is covered. In William Faulkner’s, “A Rose for Emily,” there are multiple examples of symbolism that occur throughout the story.
Some of these mythical creatures appeared in the myth of Hercules and his labors. There are creatures that helped like chiron he was a teacher and he was higher class centaur than the others. Then other ones were bad like echidna and they say she was the most dangerous and most fearsome monster of all and attacked and ate families. Some of the beasts are dead but some are still alive and so many people believe that these mythical beasts were still out there. So people still honor the people that were thought to be the slayers of the harmful beasts and to the heros that were thought to help in the slaying of the evil. Many people still believe that these mythical creatures are
From the dawn of time, archaic humans have always fabricated some sort of ‘superior’ being. The Egyptians had Isis, Osiris, Horus, and countless other deities. The Hebrews claim Yahweh as the creator of all, while the Hindus say gods like Lakshimi, Brahman and Vishnu determine our earth’s well being. Each ancient civilization had their own unique god(s) who formed unity in communities, something that pushed forth a set of laws for people and made society run so smoothly. Religion was everything for our ancestors, and they have so audibly giv...
CPU Stands for "Central Processing Unit." The CPU is the primary component of a computer that processes instructions. It runs the operating system and applications, constantly receiving input from the user or active software
A motherboard is a much larger topic to discuss. The motherboard sometimes referred to as the mainboard, system board, planar board or logic board is the main printed circuit board in computers. It is a large board generally made of silicon that holds basically all of the crucial electronic components of the system. Components such as the CPU, memory, optical drives, video card, sound card and connections for other peripherals are fixed on the motherboard. Motherboards vary greatly as far as what components they are compatible with. Each mother board only supports one type of (CPU).
