Separate Peace Plot Summary Gene the main character returns to his boarding school, Devon, fifteen years after he graduated. First he visits a flight of marble stairs, then he visits a tree by the river which brings back memories of his time at the school. Gene continues to tell of this time, tells that he was 16 living with his good friend Phineas. It is in the early 1940’s so World War II is a big topic in the story. Gene and Finny are close friends even though their personalities are extremely different. Gene is introverted and focuses on his school work while Finny is extroverted and focuses on sports. When evidence is apparent Finny leaves feeling ashamed. While he’s leaving Finny falls down the flight of marble stairs and breaks the same leg he had shattered. Finny does not want Gene to apologize but realizes the accident was not based on anger and the two forgive each other. The next day, bone marrows enter Finny’s bloodstream during surgery and Finny dies. When Finny dies, Gene’s anger and frustration dies with him. Gene does not cry when he dies because he has now come to terms with himself. Separate Peace Two Quotes “I did not cry then or ever about Finny. I did not cry even when I stood watching him being lowered into his family’s straight-laced burial ground outside of Boston. I could not escape a feeling that this was my own burial, and you do not cry in that sense.” This reveals that Gene finally has closure and finally has come to terms with himself. This also shows how much of a burden Finny was over Gene that he did not even cry about him. “Then these separate sounds collided into the general tumult of his body falling clumsily down the white marble stairs.” This quote describes Finny’s second accident which causes him to have surgery. Finn dies while in the surgery which is why this is the biggest turning point in the novel.
