A Scary Good Time
Fall. The leaves are falling, the air is getting brisk, the sense of spookiness surely does not go unmissed. It can be seen throughout town, but Busch Gardens’ Howl-O-Scream is the largest venue around. Howl-O-Scream is Busch Gardens’ alter ego come fall, there are monsters and ghouls inside the park and in haunted houses. Seeing the production as a guest simply puts one in awe, but much more appreciation for the event is felt by the employees. Members of the haunted houses, better known as the Scare Squad, appreciate the fact that they work in a historical park, provide guest with an array of emotions, and create a unique family-like dynamic with fellow cast members.

Guests can be critical on whether or not the house and actors performed well. They will even have a negative opinion on how they were scared. But the actors do not let one negative comment get in the way of scaring hundreds of other guests. If anything it will make them stride to do better. The emotions change from guest to guest. Some will be high strung, others will be laughing off the scare. The important factor is that they are enjoying their time at Howl-O-Scream. Enjoyment and scaring go hand in hand for scare actors. A scare squad member once said, “It is not a successful night unless a guest has peed themselves out of fear.” This is the motto they live by. The objective is to scare, so there is no better feeling than seeing a park operations employee escorting a person out of the maze because they were too scared. That is why scare squad members feel like an extension of family. They start and end the shift together. From warm ups and silly games to putting on makeup and the deathly spray that is barrier spray, they do it all as a unit. Since this is a very physically and mentally taxing job, cast mates and stage managers make it as enjoyable as possible for each other. It could just be little things like mints and chocolate, but it shows that the manager cares and appreciates their employees . A key component of success at Howl-O-Scream is communication. Without communication haunted houses would be even more hectic than what they are now.
