Some people find the answer to fulfill that need in sports. In the United States, the go-to sport is football. Following one’s hometown team or childhood NFL team through the regular season, playoffs, and hopefully, the Super Bowl has become a staple for today’s culture. The NFL conquered the sport until the 1960s when a new, more dominant and competitive AFL formed. Because of this new spark, many fans converted to supporting and cheering for the AFL teams (“NFL Super Bowl”). The tension grew between the two leagues, and there were many disagreements about who actually was the best team in the nation. Because Americans are born with a competitive spirit, the champions of the AFL and NFL decided to play each other for a championship game, the Super Bowl. The first Super Bowl was played on January 15, 1967, at the Los Angeles Coliseum.
Every year, millions of viewers from around the world tune in to watch one of the most exhilarating events in sports unfold--the Super Bowl. The one-game, winner-take-all contest for supremacy in the National Football League has grown into more than just a football game opposing the best teams of the NFL. It has become the premier event for new television advertising. With half of the ten, all-time most watched television events having been Super Bowls; networks are able to sell precious seconds of airtime to large companies for millions of dollars. As we move into the 21st century, publicity for the game’s commercials has come to rival that of the game itself.
All in all, the National Football organization has went through some very important modifications to make the game more entertaining, but the most significant adjustment was most likely the NFL-AFL Merger. This event happened on “June 8th, 1966” (Pelissero). This was mostly arranged by Ralph wison Jr., founder of the Bills. Many teams were created and the AFL and are now the current NFL teams, like “1960-1996 Houston Oilers, 1997-1998 Tennessee Oilers, 1999-present Tenness... ... middle of paper ... ... the league started with 14 teams and has evolved into a league of 32 teams. Fortunately for these teams, they do not have to compete with other leagues for fame after the NFL-AFL merger.
The First Super Bowl Many football fans may not know that the first super bowl in 1967, was not officially named Super Bowl I. The third super bowl game, played in 1969, became the first officially titled “Super Bowl” game. In the previous two years the championship game was titled “AFL-NFL World Championship Game”. (Packers Beat) Many fans would ultimately agree that the title “Super Bowl” is a much more riveting name to the game then its previous title. During the middle 60’s, the game had grown to such a high level of competition between players and fans of both the National Football League and the American Football League there was talk of a merger.

College football is attractive and entertaining and most people spend their Saturdays enjoying the game. Moreover, college football has undefeated teams and bitter rivalry games that has attracted people for a very long time thus remaining popular. College football is more than a game.
