Being the ‘Virgin Queen’ also added to her popularity. Elizabeth’s reign is considered to some to be an “era of glory” (Trueman), but her early years leading up to her reign were less than favorable. Henry VIII did not set a good example in Elizabeth’s early years. Elizabeth was born to King Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn on September 7, 1533. Henry had wanted a son so severely that he had had his previous wives beheaded since they gave him no sons (Eakins).

Shortly after Mary Stuart was born, her father died. He died only six days after her birth, right after he heard that Mary of Guise (Mary Stuart’s mother) had given birth to a girl, rather than a boy, meaning that the dynasty could not be continued. Consequently, Mary was sent to France when she was only six years old to marry Francis II, the Dauphin, in return for France's aid in helping the Scottish rid the threat of the English.
