Makers and Makerspaces was the subject of my multimodal English 1101 class, which exposed me to an innovative culture and developed competence in all communication modalities. Excluding the importance of this brand-new culture, which motivated me and originated a resonant excitement enough to sign up for the class, towards the end of the course I realized the main goal was to have every student work towards mastery of communication skills. Furthermore, the class constantly contributed to my personal writing and communication skills development throughout the creation of a webpage, a group presentation, and an analysis essay. As an international student, the transition was rough because I had been detached from the english language for three years before coming to Georgia Tech. Nevertheless, the course gave me much needed exposure to a language that I will require for my personal advancement. Although there are still innumerable things for me to improve regarding my English skills, the course taught me to express my ideas efficiently and craft effective arguments using different sources such as images and research.
The English course forced me to become more organized by breaking down every project into different processes which compelled me to make a continuous effort for the class, which differ from the usual standards at high-school. Since I did not work under pressure, my ideas were able to flow more naturally and my work was of higher quality. As I created the webpage, which is artifact 1, the detailed process served as a guidance in how to proceed with my webpage, which included multiple modalities thoughtfully and synergistically. Furthermore, the importance of teamwork and collaboration to produce a superior work as a result of bolstering each other strengths was demonstrated in my third artifact, which is a group presentation. Although this project was my first english presentation and I had many feelings encountered, positive and negative ones, it showed me the influence that an orator can convey not only in a massive group but also inside a classroom. Good speakers plan not only the content of their speech but also their style of delivery. Despite the importance of having a clear and logical message to convey, how the message is presented is critical for bringing forth the desire concept (WOVEN 229).
