Global warming is being caused by humans, not the sun. What is global warming? Carbon dioxide and other air pollution that is collecting in the atmosphere like a thickening blanket, trapping the sun's heat and causing the planet to warm up. Coal-burning power plants are the largest U.S. source of carbon dioxide pollution -- they produce 2.5 billion tons every year. Automobiles, the second largest source, create nearly 1.5 billion tons of CO2 annually. The planet is changing faster than expected, with the earth getting hotter, and coal-burning power plants are to blame for the largest amount of carbon dioxide pollution.
Coal-burning power plants are the largest U.S. source of carbon dioxide pollution. So you might wonder, what is the coal being used for? Well coal is a black sedimentary rock. It is formed from high pressure and temperatures, from organic matter that lived millions of years ago, through a process called coalification. The amount of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen in the coal are the main factors during the combustion. The carbon amount determined how much CO2 emi...
First, during the last few decades the Earth is experiencing greater rate of rising temperatures due to greenhouse gases that are being produced by human activities rather than because of environmental reasons, such as solar or volcanic activities. In 2006 the President of the National Academy of Sciences stated: “There is no doubt that the Earth is warming,” also he added that people are at least partly responsible for these changes in addition to regular factors (Cicerone, par.4). Natural factors have produced climate fluctuations on Earth for several million years. People have effected an atmosphere of the Earth just for nearly one hundred years, since Industrial Revolution has begun (Revkin 340). Of course, it is unfair to say that global warming is caused entirely by humans. For example, people can not have an impact on the position of Earth in relation to the sun, or on the galactic density, or such nature events as air emissions of volcanic gases. As a result of these environmental factors, Earth usually had higher rates of temperature fluctuations during the previous million years than it has in later centuries. On the other hand, people are responsible for the highest concentration of greenhouse gases during the last 650,000 years in the atmosphere due to industrial manufacturing, driven by the increase in consumer consumption (Lindsey, par.
Coal is one of the world’s most abundant fossil fuels. Coal was formed during the Carboniferous Period when dead plant material was buried and subjected to high pressure and heat. Coal is classified by moisture content and composition. There are four d...
First of all, there are more potent gases being emitted into the atmosphere such as the well known greenhouse gas, methane. Methane is mostly associated with cows. Yes, I said it, cows. When cows fart, they release the greenhouse gas methane. Also, methane heats up the atmosphere more than carbon dioxide. So the point here is that global warming isn't mainly caused by humans.
The Chinese Republic of Coal: Why the excessive combustion of coal in China poses detrimental impacts on its environment and society, as well as the rest of the world.
On February 2, 2014, a coal ash spill occurred in Eden, North Carolina which affected the Dan River; wildlife, drinking water, and other surroundings were destroyed or contaminated. The spill was caused by a leaky 48-inch storm water pipe located in a defunct steam station. The spill not only devastated its surroundings, but “sent millions of gallons of sledge” into the river which is used by North Carolina and Virginia citizens for drinking water (Shoichet, 2014). The leak was eventually patched, but left traces of copper, aluminum, iron, and arsenic that state environmental officials stated were “above state standards for surface water” (Shoichet, 2014). At the time, the article was published by CNN, environmental officials were working on a plan for cleaning up the river and remaining pollutants. Although the spill was not a major spill, the future effects that coal ash may have on the river, wildlife and citizens of North Carolina and Virginia are unknown.
The coal industry has spent millions of dollars trying to convince people that they can create a product that is environmentally friendly. The coal industry wants the image of being a "clean" energy seems like a new phenomenon, where today there is better technology to understand the risk of coal and the everyday environment impact that can be seen today with the use of coal for more than a century for industrialization.
Over time, scientists have been able to perform studies and gather the information as to what exactly causes global warming. Scientists have collectively agreed that humans are the main cause of global warming is human produced. Humans burn coal, oil, and other gases to create energy. In doing so, this creates excess carbons that warm the atmosphere that block the heat from escaping the Earth (Climate Change Causes: A Blanket around the Earth). This process is known as the greenhouse effect. Other gasses that contribute to the greenhouse effect include water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and chlorofluorocarbons (Climate Change Causes: A Blanket around the Earth). Another human activity that contributes to global warming is
Firstly, global warming is said to be caused by the high levels of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere by humans. Smoke produced by factories, vehicular exhaust, and the burning of fossil fuels such as coal in power plants are the primary sources of carbon dioxide. The theory is that carbon dioxide being released into the Earth's atmosphere is steadily building up because it cannot escape into space. The theory as to why the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere actually causes the Earth's average temperature to rise is outlined as follows:
Humans have caused global warming by doing many things but the main three are burning of fossil fuels and green house gas emission, deforestation, and excessive use of chemical fertilizers. Global warming is like a bad dream going worse.
Coal is the most important fossil fuel around the world and vital for its energy security. In the process of development, coal mining is one of the major industries, which is contributing towards the pollution of the environment. The power sector is the bigger consumer followed by industrial sector (steel and cement manufacturing units). It also assures the energy supply which is important for any country's development. Coal is still remains essential in producing a diverse and balanced energy mix. It is a major fuel generating electricity worldwide. Coal is poised with different toxins which affect the environment and one of the key challenges coal industries is facing today. Coal is less effective and energy efficient compared to other fossil
Global warming is the earth slowly heating up and there are many factors to it. It is causing melting of the poles and water temperatures rising. One main factor causing this is carbon dioxide(CO2) emissions from the burning of fossil fuels to create energy. These gases being released into the atmosphere are also known as greenhouse gases. These gases trap heat within the atmosphere. While we need energy for many everyday uses there are a lot cleaner ways to make the energy. The public needs to be informed on the negative effects of creating energy this way and ways to make clean energy.
In 2007, the world consumed 5.3 billion tons of coal, 31.1 billion tons of oil, 2.92 trillion cubic meters of natural gas, and 65,000 tons of uranium. All of these energy needs could have been met with only 6,600 tons of thorium, an abundant, slightly radioactive element found in the Earth’s crust.
In talking about global warming, we need to learn what causes the greenhouse effect. Rays from the sun are taken up and absorbed by water vapor that is natural in the atmosphere. The United States emits the largest man made greenhouse gases in the world. As Americans we must realize the responsibility to reduce the emissions. (Gore, Albert) Water Vapor is eighty percent of greenhouse warming. The last twenty percent results from other gases that are in very little amounts. A huge absorber of the sun’s heat rays is carbon dioxide. Us as humans release a lot of carbon dioxide. When fossil fuels are burned, they release big amounts of carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is on the increase in our atmosphere due to car emissions. Approximately eighty percent of CO2 increases because of man’s use of fossil fuels. When there is more carbon dioxide in our atmosphere the more sun rays are absorbed. In result to this happening this will cause the earth and the earths atmosphere to warm. When the earth is warming, water temperatures will start to get warmer. Oceans and lakes will get warmer in result f...
Coal is the largest source of energy for the generation of electricity worldwide, at the same time, one of the largest anthropogenic sources of oxides of carbon and other green house gases released in to atmosphere. Coal gasification has emerged as a cleaner technology for production of combustible gases for power and heat generation which reduces the carbon dioxide emission.
The scientific definition of coal is that it is a black rock composing of carbonaceous material and moisture content that gives large amount of heat on combustion. Coal is perhaps the most important fuel in power generation industry. One of the reasons is that it is able to produce electricity at much lower rate than produced by other fossil fuels. It is estimated that a power plant running on coal produces 3 times cheaper electricity than produced from a plant working on petroleum gases.
