Even our assignment for a short presentation had me dreading my day to be up in front of everyone. I was pushed to step out of my comfort zone, because I knew there was no alternative except failing the course. Another essay was out Photo essay, which as a class we spent numerous occasions expanding our minds to construct an essay on someone we had never met. I am thankful I had these opportunities in such a small setting and a supportive environment. By the end of the semester I still found myself being challenged with new concepts, such as writing a monologue in first person from a person I have never met.
My first essay in this class was less focused then the essays I wrote later in this class. I was overwhelmed by the length requirement of the essay, and had limited experience with different writing techniques. This semester, however, I have attempted both listing and outlining. I had never used either techniques before, nevertheless, my writing benefited did from these new techniques; however, I believe I had more success with the listing technique. I used listing while writing my classify and divide essay and I believe it helped me to stay on topic and keep my writing organized.
In this essay, I will be covering how ENG101 helped me advance my way of writing; as well as how it has affected me and what that means for my future college career. Before I started this class, I was concerned that I wouldn’t learn much due to it taking place online. Let’s just say I was by no means disappointed. With each different assignment I felt myself improving, all the essays given in the course were of genres I had never truly touched on. My beginning essay, which was a narrative on my writing process, was beyond rough.
My introduction was not clear and could not set the tone for the remainder of the essay. I remember my professor said that, “Do not leave the reader gue... ... middle of paper ... ...e clean pages, I realize that I did not actively read the book. In EN 101 class, I have learned to read with a highlighter which has drastically taken my writing to a new level because I am able to connect back my initial insights marked on the page. I acquired many skills over the EN 101 semester. My major weaknesses in essay writing which were writing a sound thesis statement, expository writing and critical thinking now became my strengths in every essay I write.
Errors like these have shown me that although I have improved on many things, I still need to spend more time editing and reviewing my own papers. When I first learned we would be peer editing in this class I was honestly a bit nervous because I have always been so self-conscious about my work. In my literacy narrative “New Beginnings” I shared personal information and did not want others to think differently of me, which made me hesitate weather or not peer editing was a good idea. I now realize there was nothing to worry about and peer editing did nothing but strengthen my paper. The writing lab on campus is another great resource that I learned to take advantage of.
I was mistaken. Therefore, because of the rigorous essay work each essay brought, I learned more about how to write different pieces and grow from my “failure”. When enrolling into Composition 1, I had a fixed idea that it was going to be an easy A, since I wrote in my spare time. This class
When I first enter the class I saw myself as a writer that needed a lot of work. I knew my writing needed work because of my high school English teachers, they once told me that my writing needed a lot of work and was not college material. This statement became a reality once I received my first essay grade and feedback from my professor. I was still stuck in the high school mindset of the five paragraphs, and was unsure how to write a clear thesis statement. For example, in my first essay I had no clear thesis because I was only briefly taught how to write one my senior year of high school.
However, the assignment was not asking to tell the story, the main theme is to write what shaped you as a whole. As a result, I got a poor grade and realized that this college level course was not the same as a high school writing course. In high school, I was only satisfied in completing the essay and receiving an A. What really ... ... middle of paper ... ...lized that there were many mistakes that I needed to fix in order to perfect my writing. I need to consider more about focusing on the topic and organizing for my writing, because it appeals to the audience more clear to the point.
For example, in writing project two, for the rhetorical analysis, I could not create a thesis to grab the reader’s attention about the comparison two articles. This writing was a comparison between the two articles with the strategies that the author uses to connect with the reader. Writing the thesis about two articles seem to conflict me as the draft of my essay was continued. Learning that the thesis was the most important in the writing, I try and spend lots of time to craft and make it reasonable. The thesis made the essay strong and understandable the reader, which is the reason for it is being the important part of the
The only tough part was that I was still expected to write in the O.S. for other classes. To top that off, I had to learn to write in journalistic style as well. ... ... middle of paper ... ...life is going to be. Mom and Dad still help out with any money problems (interest-free banks are hard to find).
