Throughout our country’s history, many groups of people have experienced racism, from the Chinese immigrants that helped build the country’s railroads to the Polish craftsmen that helped build the glass making and wood working industries. Our early society had shown that no ethnic group was immune from racism. However, some ethnic groups have seen it slowly fade and almost disappear, but one group of people has not been so lucky. The African Americans have been more exposed to racism than any other people. Every day, as seen on the news and the internet, Caucasians and African Americans are hurting each other in one way or another, because of their race. In the story, the Youngers have a chance to escape poverty and fulfill one of their dreams of buying a home. This dream can be achieved as the result of a $10,000 insurance check they are about to receive from their father's death. However, problems exist within the family, as each adult has a different idea on what to do with the money. The mother, known as Mama, wants to use it for a house, Walter, the son, wants to use it to invest in a liquor store, and Beneatha, the daughter, wants to use it for college. Walter works a full time job as a chauffeur, he is one of three people in the family that work for rich, Caucasian people. Yet, Walter, just like the others, is struggling for money and has found himself begging for money from Mama. In an unprejudiced world, someone working a full time job should be able to find some type of financial security, possibly enough to invest in a liquor store. Therefore, an explanation for this situation could be that Walter is being under paid by the rich, Caucasian person he is working for because he is an African American. This is also another form of institutionalized racism since the Caucasian employer that Walter works for is preventing him the opportunity to grow and provide financial security for his family. In addition, Walter is being completely overlooked by his employer and he doesn’t have any possible alternatives to deal with the situation. The Caucasian employer in this instance just doesn't care enough about Walter, or any other African Americans. The Caucasian employer’s treatment of Walter and the other African Americans is like slavery. The employer is getting greedy and richer at the expense of Walter and the other African Americans. The employer could easily pay Walter and the other African Americans the same wage as an Caucasian employee and still make a comfortable
