We propose the Purdue HR develop a professional development plan that will document the objectives, required skill and proficiency development, and objectives that a Purdue Clerical and Service staff will need to accomplish in order to support continuous improvement and career development. This professional development plan would be used by the Purdue Clerical and Service staff’s Supervisor working with the staff member to identify the necessary skills and resources to support the staff member's career goals and the Purdue’s professional needs. Professional development for a Clerical or Service staff member begins when they make a request for a professional development plan. Their Supervisor, with advice from HR, would help the staff member develop a "living" professional development plan for them. Professional development plans should be reviewed on an on-going basis throughout the year, with at least one provisional review discussion between the staff member and supervisor prior to the end of the yearly performance review period. According to institute of medicine (IOM) report of 2010, the United States has the opportunity to renovate its health care system to provide affordable quality care that is reachable to all and leads to improved health outcomes (Institute of Medicine [IOM], 2010). The impact on nursing of the 2010 institute of medicine formulated with the purpose of producing a report that would make endorsements for an action oriented design for future of nursing profession. The major transformation of the nursing profession is needed to achieve the upgraded health care system through nursing practice, education, and leadership. Overall, the main goal is to provide safe, quality, patient-centered care that is manageable and reasonable to all and enhanced health outcomes. The IOM report offers recommendations that collectively serve as a plan “to ensure that nurses can practice to the full extent of their education and training, improve nursing education, and provide opportunities for the nurses to assume leadership positions and to serve as full partners in health care redesign and improvement efforts, and improve data collection for workforce planning and policy making” (IOM, 2010 p.1).

A career development plan is a confidential and integral document created by an individual which outlines the activities undertaken during their life. Hence, a professional development plan documents goals and skills required to accomplish dreams and aspirations. Moreover, a professional development program is reminiscent of ones’ past experiences and a glance at the future. Having a professional development plan in place is critical for graduate study to keep track of one’s progression. The principal purpose of a developmental plan is to give a description of my educational and professional background as well to explore my personal goals as it relates to my profession growth and development.

Despite the challenges that Cynthia Matson faces in her position, she is consistently in the top ten percent of ITT Tech campuses for student job placement and has always made the goal of a minimum 80% job placement rate for new graduates. The key to success in this field is to build a relationship early with students and nurture their goals and desires while working closely with academics to assure students are ready for the workforce. The learning opportunities that make up professional development take up many forms. Conferences that aim to teach new skills and methods, formal pieces of academic material, training methods provided by an external or internal organizations are all learning opportunities through which professional development is attained.
