Key Trait #1: You must have a vision. We 've all heard the saying "You must stand for something, or you 'll fall for everything." But what does that really mean? Standing firm when it comes to your company 's policies and procedures is all well and good, but it doesn 't speak to having a vision. As a leader, you have to learn to communicate your vision or the vision of your company to the people you want to follow you. But how can you do that? • Learn to paint a picture with words. Speak it, write it, draw it, touch it. Whatever methods you can use to create a picture, do it. As they say, "A picture is worth a thousand words." Key Trait #2: You must have passion. Your employees want passion; in fact, they 'll go to the ends of earth because …show more content…
Passion is such a key part of being a great leader that if you don 't have it, you simply can 't be a great leader. Think of all the great leaders throughout the ages and try to name one that did not have passion.
And passion is infectious: When you talk about your vision for the company, let your passion for your vision shine through. Others will feel it and want to get on board with you. If you don 't have passion for your vision, you need to recreate your vision or reframe your description of your vision so it 's connected to your

Key Trait #4: You must be a team builder. To become a great leader, you must develop a great team or, one might say, a well-oiled machine. But how do you do that? You can start by handing off responsibility to your team and letting your team to run with it. Don 't breathe down their necks and don 't micromanage, but make yourself available if questions or problems come up. Teach your team to use the Q-CAT decision-making system and give them the freedom to work through their own decisions.
When projects aren 't on track or your team is falling behind on deadline, it serves no one if you start pointing fingers. This is when you need to rise to the occasion and inspire confidence in your employees, to let them know you support them and ready to help. Be ready to alter plans and make new ones. Don 't forget to use humor to keep your team 's spirits up during a crisis. When an emergency hits, your team will look to you to be a tower of strength and
All of these traits begin with the individual realizing who he is and where he stands to become a leader. Like Jack Welch said, “Before you are a leader, success is all about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all about growing others.” Works Cited Machiavelli, Niccol. The Prince of the Sea.
To be a great leader there are many qualities you must have. The hard part is actually knowing what qualities you need, because their are different types of leaders. For example you might be a business leader. These leaders do everything they can to motivate their co-workers, make sure the business stays firm, and also are well prepared for any crises that may occur. Anne Mulcahy the CEO of Xerox surely didn’t know her business was going to undertake many financial barriers, but instead of letting it get her and filing for bankruptcy, she took full responsibility and lead the business towards success by reducing the company’s workforce and eliminating the entire desktop portion of Xeron. Leadership is a complex process with many different approaches. This is a summary of the leadership literature including the pros and cons of each approach. The trait approach implies successful leaders are born with those traits. This theory focuses on identifying certain traits that make people great leaders. Some of the major leadership traits identified in the trait approach are intelligence, self-confidence, determination, integrity, and social ability. There are many advantages to the trait approach. “First, it is intuitively appealing because it fits clearly into the popular idea that leaders are special people who are out front, leading ...
There are lot of theories and opinions about what makes a good leader. People who want to become a good leader not only have to have the will to take on the job, but they need to have certain traits and qualities that are characteristic of a good leader. The trait theory of leadership supports this claim that some people are endowed with certain characteristics that make them more capable of being a good leader than others. Many leaders and researchers have come up with certain traits that make people great leaders, whether it is being a leader in a business, organization or a leader of a sports team.
What makes you a great leader? That one of the many questions many of the people are trying to seek the answer to. Unlike during the Trait Era in the study of leader where people are born with leadership ability, we are living in the contingency era where leadership can be taught and become something that can be adopted (Nahavandi, 2015) . Some of the methods that are used to enhance people’s leadership ability are by evaluating and assisting various factors and personality of the person to determine the strength and weakness of the person. So what is personality? The definition of personality is a set of psychological characteristics that makes each person unique and constitutes a person’s character and temperament (Nahavandi, 2015). Good leadership trait is important as a leader. A leadership trait helps define a leader’s individuality and gives them the ability to develop their leadership skill in order to become a great leader for others. Leadership traits give effective ways to build one self as a leader and create a successful path to self-awareness. As stated by Knight (2005) “I believe leaders are made and not born. Leaders are distinguished by what they do, and what they inspire other people to do, and not by their genes, their looks, their credentials, or their beliefs.” Leadership traits are a must and essential for success not only for oneself but for the employees.
Although, there are some leaders who are born “natural-born leaders” many must learn the skills to become a successful leader. Every leader has natural strong traits as well as weak areas that need improving. A leader becomes stronger while using their natural talents as well as building on their weaker ones.
honest, follow through on tasks, and are forward leaning. The leader sets the example – walk the walk. Leaders are not afraid to ‘get their hands dirty.’ With all of this, the herd or team will be more productive and willing to bleed with them…go the extra mile, to complete an objective. I would like to say that I emulate this philosophy, but there are behaviors/skills that I need to hone:
I feel that a great leader must possess courage. Courage to go against the norm in your organization be an agent of change for the better of the organization. Most organizations get comfortable with the familiar and are reluctant to make changes for fear of failing. That is why companies fail. As a leader it is essential to have the courage to stand up and make the changes that will benefit the organization in the long run regardless of the resistance of the few. It is not important just to say you want change but you need to believe in the changes you want to make and exemplify courage in your demeanor and the way you address those within your organization. My entire life has been about going against the norm and having the courage to stand up for what I believe is right. Courage to be is something you either have or do not. I believe that courage is ingrained in your personality. In my career as both a Nurse and now as a Healthcare Business Analyst I tend to go against the norm and forge ahead to make changes that will benefit the organizations I have worked for. It has been something as simple as restructuring the way trains new business analysts where I currently work. When I started working for my organization almost a year ago I would hear people talking about how there needed to be a new and more efficient way to train new employees. The
Perhaps the most important qualities of a leader are passion and motivation. Especially when leading a group for a particular cause, a leader must be personally attached to that cause. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., for example, is a legendary leader because he fought for a cause that directly affected him. had he not been pushing for a personal reason, his actions would not have been as passionate. This would have caused a lack in motivation, another essential leadership quality. A leader faces many roadblocks and opposition and thus, must be motivated to continue fighting and leading. A leader’s attitude and opinions are valued by the group and therefore, if a leader is motivated, the group will be, too. The continued actions and successes, no matter how small, which move the group closer to its goal also help its motivation and drive.
Traits of a good leader are trustworthiness, respectfulness, honesty, and be stern. When you have leaders that take their role seriously, you can form a backbone to an organization that cannot be broken. You have born leaders and you have trained leaders. Martin Luther King was a natural born leader for the Civil Rights movement. King saw there was something that needed to be changed and he took the steps to change the world.
Leadership is a wonderful quality for anyone to have because not everyone possesses leadership qualities and skills; however, a person can learn to have leadership qualities if he or she has the desire. A good leader has many excellent qualities such as; a leader has followers, knows how to encourage the workers, can get results by implementing strategies, can create a vision for the company, and communicates the vision clearly. These are not the only qualities a leader must have but they are some of the most important qualities a person must have in order to be successful in a leadership position. "Management is doing things right; leadership is doing the right things." Druker, Peter F. Retrieved Dec. 14, 2005 from http://www.famous-quotes-and-quotations.com/leadership-quotes.html. Another excellent quote about leadership is "The best executive is the one who has sense enough to pick good men to do what he wants done, and self-restraint to keep from meddling with them while they do it." Roosevelt, Theodore. Retrieved Dec. 14, 2005 from http://www.famous-quotes-and-quotations.com/leadership-quotes.html.
Throughout my life I have encountered the chance to experience position of being a leader. Being part of groups in university for class presentations, being the organizing secretary of my campus fellowship, being a youth leader in my church and the church admin, also being part of a family. Leaders are charismatic, inspirational and trust worthy. I have gained some important qualities of being a good leader through these experiences. Most of the valuable leadership’s characteristics that I obtained and strengthened are: learn to become a better leader every day, how to be a team player, to be a better listener, to be an effective communicator, to have more patience, not afraid of constructive criticism, to be outspoken, and to be a problem solver. Even though I have gained a lot, I still have more things to learn to become a better leader such as being more assertive, being more disciplined, becoming a better public speaker, and learn how to be realistic and not too optimistic. You are a leader if someone else choses to follow you.
The most important quality that differentiates a leader from other people is the ability to think strategically. Vision is the most important aspect that drives a leader’s strategy. It is all about where you want to be. Other qualities include Decision making, problem solving, time management, self-motivation, emotional intelligence and many more. Once we know the type of leadership, it is easy to find what leadership skills we have and which we need to develop which is explained in the book “Leadership: Theory, application, skill development (5th ed.) by Lussier and Achua.” Also, Keirsey Style Sorter personality type helps to knowing our temperament type, and work on our weakness and to emerge out as a good leader.
Another aspect of leadership includes leadership traits such as being influential and inspirational. There also different contexts of leadership, e.g, leading oneself, leading other individuals, leading groups, leading organizations. Some traits that are often associated with being an effective leader include a measure of intelligence, high energy, self confidence, dominance, and a need for achievement. An effective, charismatic leader must lead by example. That leader must be able to know what is going on, the job or task that is being accomplished, and be able to lead the group into performing the task at hand successfully.
