A Long Way Gone is a war story but also is a story about hope. In A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah is both hopefully and devotional because of the age that he was touched by war. In the beginning of the book Ishmael is 12 years old in Sierra Leone when the war broke out in the country he saw things that scared him and took away his innocence. “ the van were three dead bodies , two girls,and one boy, and their blood was all over the seats and the ceiling of the van.” (13). Ishmael was 12 when he saw his horrific scene that he aw at such a tender age.He will never be able to forget what he saw that day that will stay with him his entire life. In the middle of the story it become hopefully when Ishmael and his friends were taken in by a stranger who did not fear them. “ we stayed in the hunt for a week . Our host brought us water and food every morning and night”( 63). This Stanger didn’t see these boys as a threat the stranger saw them as children like what they are no some army or rebels but as children innocent boys. He was in a place away from the war and rehabilitated but sadly was short lived “ it was woken that morning by gunshots erupting around the State House and House of Parliament.”( 202). Ishmael can never run away from the violence that he was sucked into when he was in boyhood he can be free from what holds him as long as he is in Sierra Leone. The hopefully part in this ending is when he made it to the United States to live with Laura a girl he met when he went to New York .” I didn’t know that Laura’s house was going to be my future home.” ( 200). Laura took Ishmael into her home so he wan be in Sierra Leone where he could have been killed or taken back into the army were his rehabilitation would have been ruined and he would be back into the violent cycle he worked so hard to recover
