As the wise Greek philosopher Socrates ever so boldly put it, “The unexamined life is not worth living.” In essence, in a bit mellower of terms, that is to say that if you do not take the time out to analyze the core values of your life, you are limiting the quality and depth of your life. In regards to this matter, I’d like to turn to some advice from Robert Gerzon. Robert holds a Master’s Degree in Psychology and is a licensed Mental Health Counselor. He has also authored a book called, “Finding Serenity in an Age of Anxiety”. “As a psychotherapist, I see so many tragic examples of the effect of an unexamined life. The good news is that it is never too late to start examining our life more thoroughly – and to reap the rewards.” (Gerzon) One might wonder how they can go about this self examination and perhaps if they are a busy individual, where they can find the time to partake in this self-examination. In my opinion, there is not an academic subject out there that helps you to engage in self-examination more effectively than the study of philosophy. For me, philosophy is really a...
It all started in high school, as a person, I was far from being responsible. School was just a place to meet friends, spent most of my time playing around, and never thought about the future. But gradually, my parents were getting worried about me. One night, I was in my room when they called, and asked me to go to the living room. I looked at their faces and I knew that we were going to have a serious conversation, and I was right. They tried to give me an advice, an advice on how time flies and I never had the ability to turn it back. That life was about making the right decision, and there were options and opportunities presented to me. Whether they were good or bad, I need to think of what was best for me and made a decision on which options or opportunities I would take, so I had not regretted my decision later on in my life. When I heard this, I realized that all this time, I had been wasting time playing around and I need to think about the future. For a couple of days, I was weighing my option left and right about what to do after graduated. Should I go straight to...
Since the summer of my senior year in high school, I was confused about the meaning of learning. What do I want to learn, and what could I do with my bachelor degree? So far, it has been two years. I still could not tell the answer to the first question, but, progressively, I know that I could do nothing with my bachelor degree and even with the higher degrees. On the other hand, the knowledge I learned so far is the thing I could rely. However, in some people’s points of view, this is unpractical. For such a long time, I have found few individuals sharing the similar ideas with me. Once, I saw a celebrity, who graduated from Tsinghua University, having a show online. He said that he was extremely disappointed when a college student, who also studies at Tsinghua University, ask him about whether he should take the examination of the public servant or not. From his point of view, as a part of Tsinghua University, one of the best universities in China, how could such a smart student is satisfied with basic needs, rather than cultivating himself. According to my experience, there are lots of people around me are pursuing material benefits. Self-cultivation, thus, is less important.
All proverbs come with perspective, and perspective was defiantly the key to understanding this one. Traversing the walk of life, returning from depression and suicide; things are indeed their worst as they get better, a shining light and breaking free.
This paper intends to provide a basic understanding of my individual personality and how it plays a role in my organization in the U.S. Navy. It covers the results from a self-assessment tool that uses a series of questions to identify specific personality strengths and weaknesses. It is divided into three steps. The first one, focuses on the most important personality trait results. The second, how these results play a role in my organization. And the third, how God’s Holy Spirit has worked in my life to change weaknesses into strengths. Needs work
Writing has never been a strength I have possessed. English 102 has been difficult and challenging for me because I have had to move past the high school level of a basic book report or a five paragraph paper that has narrowed my ideas of writing for many years. Putting on paper what my thoughts are in a way that is logical and accurate for what the assignment is asking has been hard for me this semester. My ideas are now more involved because I have learned through English 102 how to develop my writing skills in different formats, for example, in an annotated bibliography and a research paper. English 102 has taught me many things about writing like locating sources from the library and on line as well as continuing
The first step to achieving any measure of progress in any activity is admitting the existence of an area in need of improvement and accepting the action necessary for successful development. In developing an identity and living an examined life, it is important to engage in internal reflection and evaluation for the benefit of truly knowing oneself. With this inner insight and personal identity, an individual can lead a successful and meaningful life. True personal progress can only be fully achieved through the procedural acquisition of awareness and acceptance and the performance of the action needed for improvement in regard to all aspects of individual health and prosperity.
“Self” is the identity bestowed upon humans that allows us to distinguish ourselves from one another. A persons unique psyche is what entitles them to be considered an individual and mindfully independent. This distinct self identity follows a person through out every facet of their lives. It remains the same “self” from the time a person is born to the day they die, and possibly after. Despite many opinions, the true “self” does not come from our physical body, it comes from the mind and the soul. It is not what a person specifically thinks and feels, but the distinctive unparalleled way they do so. “Self” is embodied by our continued existence in every moment we experience. Our “self” is created to be stable and is best exemplified through consciousness. Consciousness, as defined by Miller in John Perry’s First Night, is “the non-physical and non-material aspects of you”. Some non-physical features of consciousness are demonstrated through our actions, memories, and how we perceive information. As new born babies, our consciousness is already established. Newborns have the ability to recognize their individual needs. They have a full understand of their idea of pain and pleasure, happiness and sadness. As we grow older, we better establish an awareness of our
It was not too long before I discovered the faults in my erroneous living. I finally realized, and truly not a moment too soon, that if I did not start living for the present, my future would soon become my neglected present. I would have wasted my life doing meaningless things and I would have no experience to share with anyone who may be interested in the uneventful life I had led. After I came to this startling revelation, I grew even more apathetic in my depression. I truly felt that there was nothing I could do to remedy this situation and was at a total loss for solutions. Soon enough, though, I concluded that there was no alternative to hard work to change the current state of affairs in my life. It was then that I truly embarked on the most difficult journey of my life thus far. This being the journey of self-alteration and successfully changing my own behavioral patterns.
The intention of the essay is to show reflective self-analysis, which will be described from strengths and weaknesses, personality, skills, learning styles, emotional intelligence and psychometric profile in order to develop myself to have sense of employability for my career in the future. Once Trought (2012) says that employability skills can help establishing success. Therefore, it is very crucial to review oneself as a first step.
During my initial self-evaluation and assessment of me as a perspective counselor, self- awareness was an essential aspect of becoming an effective counselor. I am aware of certain things that can prevent me from becoming a competent counselor such as being unaware of my strengths and weaknesses. As a current community support worker, I have already had the opportunity to work with individuals who require different levels of support. Providing assistance to the specific population has given me the chance to utilize my communication skills. My work experience has also allowed me to be more self-aware, and open minded. After taking the techniques of counseling class I am more than confident that I have grown professionally since the beginning
Through the first two chapters of this course I have learned many new things about myself. From why I am how I am with people to how much health risk my stress level is, the self-assessments have shown me something new in each one. Starting with the first self-assessment in chapter 1,the Jungian Personality test, I learned exactly how my personality works and how I fit into my particular type. I found the reason why I like helping others whenever I can but also have times I seclude myself from social activity is because while I was classified as (F)Feeling type, I am also (I)Introverted. The second assessment, “How Productive are You?”, showed me that while I am organized and this helps my production, I also need to pay attention to my surroundings and make sure I am not working in a cluttered area. After reading this bit of information I realized that my work area is cluttered and this does sometimes cause me to search for a document, making me frustrated at lost time. In the beginning of chapter 2 I took the third self-assessment about
Imagine being a gay child born in a small town right in the middle of the Bible belt. How would you feel? The parent’s religion, values and surrounding norms will have a huge effect on whether the child will decide to cover or expose his True Self to society. Inherently socio-cultural factors in the environment will play a considerably influential role in life choices. As deducted in this example, one’s sociocultural environment is likely one of strict white Christian values, which will most likely force the individual to “cover” his True Self in order to become accepted in his community. In his work, “The New Civil Rights,” Kenji Yoshino incites individuals and society to show more of their True Selves. Socio-cultural factors enable people to cover their True Selves to be accepted by society. In order for people to feel free to express their True Selves, society must change the way it views authenticity.
We all have those days where we feel so hopeless or unable to do anything right. We have all felt that we couldn’t finish school or other life challenges. We question everything about life, that’s what happened with me. I had never had a normal life and now it takes a turn for the worse. I grew up under the circumstances that forced me to become more responsible and mature, which has enabled me to succeed later in life.
The term “philosophy” means the love of wisdom, and those that study philosophy attempt to gain knowledge through rationality and reason. 1 Socrates, the father of ancient philosophy, once stated “the unexamined life is not worth living”. This is the most important part of life and it is need to find purpose and value in life. If a person chooses to live their life without examination, their life would lack value and they would be unhappy. They would also be ignorant to the effects of their choices on themselves and the people around them.
As I have reflected on the examined life, intellectually, physically, emotionally, socially and spiritually, over the span of this semester and applied it to our own life, I have noticed a theme that links each of these dimensions together. Life is a journey of self discovery where individuals are constantly trying to come to terms with who they are as a person. Through this journey, individuals can find their calling or vocation in life, discover their potential, know one’s self, and even just make sense of life. Furthermore, I will examine this theme of self discovery in the context of each dimension and apply it to what I have learned over the course of this semester.
