A hero, is someone who rises out of the ordinary, and enters the extraordinary, whether on purpose or by mistake, heroes are people who can be related and looked up to. Heroes can come in many different shapes and sizes one of which is Scott Hudson, from Sleeping Freshmen Never Lie, written and published in 2005 by David Lubar. Scott is a boy about to enter high school. On the night before his first day of ninth grade, Scott finds out his mother is having another baby. With his life about to change in every way, Scott must to rise up to the challenges presented to him and face them head on. The refusal of the call takes place when the hero is unsure of whether they are capable of achieving the task presented to them. “Often in actual life, and not infrequently in the myths and popular tales, we encounter the dull case of the call unanswered; for it is always possible to turn the ear to other interests. Refusal of the summons converts the adventure into its negative.” (Campbell 49) After receiving the call to adventure, the hero is often unsure whether or not to accept it. They know they desperately need/want to accomplish the task, but they initially refuse due to lack of confidence or willingness. Max, who initially refused to join Sharkboy and Lavagirl, as he was convinced they were nothing but a dream. (Rodriguez) Most often, after turning down the call, the hero becomes unsure of their decision to stay within their comfort zone. Campbell defined it as an inward journey for the hero to help themselves, “This popular motif gives emphasis to the lesson that the passage of the threshold is a form of self-annihilation…. Instead of passing outward, beyond the confines of the visible world, the hero goes inward, to be born again.” (Campbell 77) However, the Belly of The Whale is not always in that form, For some heroes, Such as Max, Entering the belly of the whale is facing a sort of first battle or encounter. For Max, the battle with Mr. Electricity caused him and his crew to be launched into the dream graveyard, where they began their journey to the dream layer.
