What does it mean to have a ‘healthy’ brain and why is this so important? Just as you can expect to keep your body in a state of wellness, your brain should be given a similar treatment. A healthy brain promotes your general physical and emotional well-being. Also, more specifically, the brain’s cognitive functions, including memory, problem solving, calculation, and decision making are not hindered when a state of wellness is maintained. Lastly, serious disorders, such as Alzheimer’s, and other ailments that can follow an aging brain, may be deterred. Now, you may ask, how do I ensure my brain is healthy? There are many steps you can take but I will list five that I feel are the easiest to act upon and are more likely to have positive results. These five actions are: getting sufficient sleep, eating healthily, exercising, performing brain stimulating activities, and socializing.

The male and female differ in a number of ways ranging from size, genetics, location, specialisation, connections among other differences. The differences are critical in the different ways men and women differ while they respond to a problem, what they think and what they talk.
The brain is one of the most interesting yet the most complex part of the body. Since no one can really see what’s inside, it’s a big question for most people on how it works. The brain is made up of more than 100 billion neurons that communicate through the synapse. It controls all the function of the body, receive and interprets information and process thoughts and emotions (Hines, 2016). It is one of the most important part of the body. How we remember, how we think, do and etc. is made possible because of the brain. The brain is divided into three main parts: cerebellum, cerebrum and brainstem. Each part has its own specialised area on the body in order to function well (Hines, 2016).

The brain is an incredible part of our body and it controls everything from body coordination, thinking processes, and regulating body functions. The brain has enough energy to power a 25watt bulb. Now that’s power! The brain is composed of the cerebrum (and its lobes), the thalamus, hypothalamus, brainstem and cerebellum. The cerebrum consists of the; frontal lobe, parietal lobe, temporal lobe, and the occipital lobe. It’s the largest part of the brain and accumulates 85 percent of the weight. (1) Each part of the brain has its own specific and unique functions. Scientists have and still are studying to unlock the mysteries and full potentially of the human brain.
Taken as a whole, each state of sleep, REM and non-REM plays a crucial role in memory and learning. Without it our brains would not be given the opportunity to consolidate new ideas and concepts learned throughout the days and even years. Many studies have shown that sleep is directly correlated with learning through similar brain functions activated while animals and people were both awake and asleep. If the proper amount of sleep is not allowed, sleep deprivation will impair brain functionality. This will create problems with neuron performance in areas such as the cerebral cortex, thus causing impairment in judgment, behavior, focus, memory and learning. Overall, it is clear that a good night’s sleep plays a vital role in learning and memory.
Sleep plays an important role in everyone’s overall wellbeing. Sleep is the time where our brain can process and sort the abundant information we received throughout our day. During sleep our bodies repair, restore, and rejuvenate neural growth, memory consolidation, and it also protects us from cellular damage. (Feist and Rosenberg, 2012, pg. 243) All of those, combined, are quite important for our everyday normal function, and not getting enough sleep can be detrimental to our well beings. So in order to see personally how sleep plays a factor in my life, I recorded how much sleep I received for the past ten days, and how my overall mood and performance was throughout each day. Here’s what I found.
Each night, the average person spends approximately 7-9 hours giving their bodies a restful vacation in the land of dreams. Considering this, we spend 1/3 (or 25 years) of our entire lives engaging in this idle activity. Although these numbers can appear as a waste of time in our every day lives, sleeping and/or napping is the energy that helps fuel our bodies to function correctly. Sleep is a necessary function in our every day routine in order to make our brains function at the most efficient level. As we sleep, the brain helps us to recuperate and regain strength by “restoring and repairing the brain tissue” (Myers, 2010, p 99). Without this reviving process, we would all eventually deteriorate. By impairing the sleep deprived mentally and physically, it can potentially cause serious harm. We must fade our conscious mind, and let our mind relax within subconscious state.
Getting enough sleep can increase our chances of being more mentally/physically healthy and our safety throughout the day. How we feel throughout the day is depending on our sleep. Lack of sleep can lead to impaired judgment and actions, which can be a safety hazard towards yourself and your surroundings. When we sleep, our bodies are working to revitalize the brain to form new pathways to help with memory functions and our physical health such as healing repair heart and blood vessels and hormone balance. It is very important for everyone to maintain a good night’s rest to maintain daytime performance and lower stress.
