It wasn’t until her, her family, and friend Bailey were walking up the hill to the school, when she started to feel the pressure of the moment. At the graduation ceremony everything was going smooth, until the principal’s speech left her in doubt of bad news coming. She was right, moments later two white gentlemen took over the stage and the speaker’s post. The man speaking was Mr. Eduard Donleavy, who was running for election and took the graduation ceremony as a great opportunity for him to introduce his plans for the future. The author described his speech as ignorant, self-centered, and humiliating. Suddenly her dream of having a wonderful graduation disappeared. The ceremony turned to a nightmare of forced listening to a speech full of statements that she believed and hoped were avoidable. The speaker, in less obvious way, talked about the Negroes, how they are meant to be farmers, maids, handymen, and washerwomen, and no matter what education they get, that is the prewritten destiny. She started believing that she is not strong enough to run against the wall. His speech has finally come to an end. He left the room with the same confidence as he has entered. The author, the graduates, as well as the rest of the audience who were black, were left with mixed thoughts but mostly full of hate and humiliation.
The time for Henry Reed’s speech has come. Henry was author best friend from school. As the class valedictorian, he and his teacher prepared a speech called “To Be or Not To Be”. But Henry, while being just a child, was already well educated and mentally grown up young man. So instead of making his speech for the audience, he turned his face to the graduates and started to sing the Negro National Anthem. Soon all the graduates joined him, as well as most of the audience.
The transition of being a black man in a time just after slavery was a hard one. A black man had to prove himself at the same time had to come to terms with the fact that he would never amount to much in a white dominated country. Some young black men did actually make it but it was a long and bitter road. Most young men fell into the same trappings as the narrator’s brother. Times were hard and most young boys growing up in Harlem were swept off their feet by the onslaught of change. For American blacks in the middle of the twentieth century, racism is another of the dark forces of destruction and meaninglessness which must be endured. Beauty, joy, triumph, security, suffering, and sorrow are all creations of community, especially of family and family-like groups. They are temporary havens from the world''s trouble, and they are also the meanings of human life.
While in attendance at University of Georgia, Mary Frances Early, endured many blatant hardships and dehumanizing attitudes from her white counterparts. While attempting to enter the library a few Caucasian students created a “human barricade” in an attempt to block the entrance of the library. Mary Frances being the strong African American woman that she is stormed “full speed ahead” through the “human barricade” into the library to study.
Ralph Ellison’s short story, Battle Royal, is mainly an account of the African American struggle for equality and identity. The narrator of the story is an above average youth of the African American community [Goldstein-Shirlet, 1999]. He is given an opportunity to give a speech to some of the more prestigious white individuals. His expectations of being received in a positive and normal environment are drastically dashed when he is faced with the severity of the process he must deal with in order to accomplish his task.
In the 223 years our country has been instituted, the way black people are perceived in society has always been less than acceptable. Great leaders and motivators like Abraham Lincoln and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. have come and gone, their voices and action have attempted to change the role of black people in society. However, even in today times, equality is still far off, and there is no voice comparable to what blacks relied on in those days. Instead of marches in Alabama, or speeches in Washington, the plight of the blacks are heard through literature. Small voices in literature that makes a big impact on society. Toni Morrison and bell hooks use words to motivate people of all color. Morrison and hooks open eyes to this so-called free country we live in with the purpose of showing society's condemnation of black life, interracial relationships and black woman in a traditionally men's roles. In the two stories by Toni Morrison titled, "On the Backs of Blacks" and "Friday on the Potomac," she strives to prove the effects of racism in America, the oppression of African Americans in society, and the racial and sexist aspects of the Anita Hall and Clarence Thomas Hearings. In "Sorrowful Black Death Is Not a Hot Ticket" and "Seduction And Betrayal" bell hooks criticizes the way black life is depicted the movies: Crooklyn, The Bodyguard, and The Crying Game.
This essay showed us how white people wouldn’t let black people have any rights and treated them like they were a problem. It also showed us that no matter how much that black person tries to make something of themselves and it still gets taken away unfairly. John spent years away trying to obtain an education to educate everyone on equality, but the white people took that privilege away from him.
The last dramatic emotional change in this work is when the narrators' classmate stands up after everything that has happened to sing the Negro National Anthem, "We have come over a way that with tears has been watered, we have come, treading our path through the blood and the slaughtered" (841). This is the turning point where the narrator actually listens to the words of the song and realizes the sacrifices made before her and the opportunities that lay ahead of her, "We were on top again (p.388)," the "we" meaning the entire Negro Race. Until then, she didn't see herself as a member of the Negro Race, but just as a member of the graduating class of 1940. A rite of passage takes place here, where a young, naive black girl takes a step up to maturity and proudly joins her race.
Later the narrator is an educated young man in his teens. He's followed his grandfathers' words and it results in him being obedient to the views of the white men. The narrator is invited to recite a speech at a local town gathering which included politicians and town leaders. The narrator is forced to compete in a battle royal. He had to box blindfolded, get electrified by a rug filled with fake brass coins, and humiliated when it was time for him to give his speech. The problem with the boys understanding of the grandfather's ideology is that he doesn't know where his limit is. It almost seems as if he would go through anything the white men put in his way but even after that, the men tell him to correct himself when he even mentions social equality. The narrator is rewarded for his obedience with a scholarship, but the true value of the scholarship is questioned in a dream where the scholarship paper read, "To Whom It May Concern Keep This Nigger-Boy Running.
Early in the novel, the unnamed narrator of the novel delivered a high school graduation speech so profound, that his community invited him to deliver another speech to the prominent white members of the community. To the narrator, it appeared to be an excellent opportunity to bring together the African American and white community, with the narrator describing it as “a triumph for [their] whole community.” (Ellison 14). In the short story “Drinking Coffee Elsewhere” by Packer, readers are allowed to view firsthand how institutionalized racism affects Dina, who is the main character in the story. 	The narrator in Ellison’s short story suffers much. He is considered to be one of the brighter youths in his black community. The young man is given the opportunity to give a speech to some of the more prestigious white individuals. The harsh treatment that he is dealt in order to perform his task is quite symbolic. It represents the many hardships that the African American people endured while they fought to be treated equally in the United States. He expects to give his speech in a positive and normal environment. What faces him is something that he never would have imagined. The novel covered so much that high school history textbooks never went into why America has never fully recovered from slavery and why systems of oppression still exists. After reading this novel, I understand why African Americans are still racially profiled and face prejudice that does not compare to any race living in America. The novel left a mixture of frustration and anger because it is difficult to comprehend how heartless people can be. This book has increased my interests in politics as well and increased my interest to care about what will affect my generation around the world. Even today, inmates in Texas prisons are still forced to work without compensation because peonage is only illegal for convicts. Blackmon successfully emerged the audience in the book by sharing what the book will be like in the introduction. It was a strange method since most would have expected for this novel to be a narrative, but nevertheless, the topic of post Civil War slavery has never been discussed before. I was late for school, and my father had to walk me in to class so that my teacher would know the reason for my tardiness. My dad opened the door to my classroom, and there was a hush of silence. Everyone's eyes were fixed on my father and me. He told the teacher why I was late, gave me a kiss goodbye and left for work. As I sat down at my seat, all of my so-called friends called me names and teased me. The students teased me not because I was late, but because my father was black. They were too young to understand. All of this time, they thought that I was white, because I had fare skin like them, therefore I had to be white. Growing up having a white mother and a black father was tough. To some people, being black and white is a contradiction in itself. People thought that I had to be one or the other, but not both. I thought that I was fine the way I was. But like myself, Shelby Steele was stuck in between two opposite forces of his double bind. He was black and middle class, both having significant roles in his life.
