A Good Neighbor
When it came time to write a Presentation paper for my Comm 235 course on a company's public relations program, I was able to write on the one I've played a key role in developing for my company. Needless to say, I liked the opportunity to brag a little.
U.S. Group, Inc. is a general contractor managing residential, commercial, and road construction projects across South Carolina. In a field not known for having good community relations, U.S. Group has developed a public relations program to keep the public informed about its five multi-million dollar road construction projects: State Route 802 in Beaufort, the interchange of U.S. Route 378 and I-26 in Columbia, College Park Road in Ladson, State Route 219 in Newberry, and the interchange of U.S. Route 17-A and I-26 in Summerville.
The company’s public relations program centers around three approaches: direct public communications, media communications, and the use of the Internet to supplement its public and media communications, and is overseen by an on-staff public relations specialist working out of the company’s Lowcountry regional office in Summerville. With a background in advertising, political, and Internet communication, Earl Capps, the company’s public relations specialist, manages the company’s public and media communications program. Greg Cook, the company’s Lowcountry Regional Manager, describes the program as part of the company’s “Good Neighbor” philosophy towards community relations, whose objective at to “keep the public more informed, reduce conflicts by being more pro-active in the release of information, and improve the image of U.S. Group (Cook).”

My clinical rotation for NURN 236 is unique in that all patients I care for at Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland have a diagnosis of heart failure (HF). HF occurs when the heart is unable to pump adequate blood supply, resulting in insufficient oxygen and nutrients to the tissues of the body (Smeltzer, Bare, Hinkle, and Cheever, 2012). Approximately 670,000 Americans are diagnosed with HF each year and is the most common hospital discharge diagnosis among the elderly (Simpson, 2014). Moreover, according to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), HF is the leading cause of 30-day hospital readmission followed by acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and pneumonia (medicare.gov|Hospital Compare, 2013). This information along with my weekly HF patient cohort prompted my curiosity regarding impacts of HF readmissions, factors of HF readmission, and to compare suggested evidence based practice with policies utilized at Union Memorial for reducing the 30-day readmission rate for HF.

Angelman Syndrome is a neuro-genetic disorder, brought upon the body through the mutilation or deletion of the maternal 15th chromosome. The prevalence of this disorder is still constantly debated because of the common symptoms it shares with other disorders, making it difficult to recognize and differentiate. More specific studies of behavior are needed to increase the range of knowledge on such a complex disorder. In 2007 Dr. Weeber relieved a mouse model of many symptoms of Angelman Syndrome. Studies of this disease are crucial for finding the cure. Even though this is a difficult challenge, there are signs of hope to cure this disease for humans.
On stage, I anticipated third place, but was once again stunned when I placed second. This whole experience was life changing. Working for the National FFA Convention, I developed a work ethic to stick to something, and to do my best, even if it seems impossible. I also gained communication skills, and the ability to work outside my comfort zone. Even now it is hard for me to interact with others, but this accomplishment taught me that I can do hard things and I can communicate effectively. I learned how to perform research and express my findings. This experience was also very valuable for it directed me to my career path. It opened up doors as to my abilities, and gave me the confidence to pursue my dreams without fear. It taught me that failures happen, but enduring effort will turn failure into success. In my interviews, I learned that complete honesty is far better than false cover-ups. I became the person I am now because I was blessed with the experience. XYZ Construction Inc. performs horizontal construction work, including roads, airfields, and bridges. The company’s headquarters is in Denver, Colorado, and has 16 field offices in 11 states. The workforce includes cumbersomely hefty and light equipment operators, civil engineers, and project managers along with an administrative staff in the headquarters facility with support staff in the 16 field offices. The company has 2,300 year-round employees and will surge to an average of 4,500 employees during peak construction periods. Currently, XYZ Construction Inc. is a privately owned company that commenced as a family business in the 1950s. The present owners have decided that it is time to transform the business from one of private ownership to public ownership and plans for its Initial Public Offering (IPO) in 12 months. (NCU, 2014)

The discipline of public relations is a modern profession which has been in existence for only close to a century; however, it has already taken an important role in the fields of business, government, entertainment and non-profit organizations including educational institutions and healthcare organizations. Public relations professionals are required to have excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills and have the ability to persuade the public. It is imperative for PR professionals to effectively communicate with its public in order to establish and maintain a positive relationship. The first person who is believed to have used the Golden Ratio is Phidias when he used it to design the statues inside of the Parthenon. This happened between 490 and 430 BC. In the early 300’s BC Plato used the Golden Ratio when he described the five platonic solids which are the tetrahedron, cube, octahedron, dodecahedron, and the icosahedron. Later in the 300’s Euclid gave the first written definition of the Golden Ratio which is an extreme and mean ratio. Then between 1170 and 1250 Fibonacci discovered a numerical series which had sequential elements that approaches the Golden Ratio asymptotically. Between 1445 and 1517 Luca Pacioli defined the Golden Ratio as the “divine proportion”. Then in between 1550 and 1631 Michael Maestlin published the first known approximation of the inverse golden ratio as a decimal fraction which is 1.61803398875. Very soon afterwards Johannes Kepler proved that the golden ratio is the limit of the ratio of consecutive Fibonacci numbers. Then in between 1842 and 1891 Edouard Lucas named the numerical sequence the Fibonacci sequence. In 1974 Roger Penrose discovered Penrose tiling which is a pattern that is related to the golden ratio both in the ratio of areas of its two rhombic tiles and in their relative frequency within the pattern.
First item to discuss is where the Fibonacci sequence came from. The Fibonacci sequence was founded by a math wizard in 1202, named Leonardo Pisano (Edson). He is better known as Fibonacci. Fibonacci discovered a sequence of numbers and published them in a book titled Liber Abaci. The Fibonacci sequence is simply a number system in which the next number of the sequence is equal to the some of the two numbers that precede it. Public relations is everywhere today. It is a practice that has become an important aspect of any business venture. Whether an organization is not for profit, for profit, or governmental, they still need and desire to communicate their purpose within the community and public relations allows this to happen. There are several publics in which the PR practitioner must correspond with and each requires a different means of communication. Internal publics are inside the organizations such as clerks, managers, and stockholders. "External publics are those not directly connected to the organization: the press, government, educators, customers, suppliers, and the community" (Seitel, 2004). Each public plays a key role in the PR of the organization. The many functions of PR can also be categorized based on what purpose they serve the organization.
