In the short story, “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” by Flannery O’Connor, a family set out on a road trip to Florida. Having an eccentric grandmother, two bratty kids and an angry cat cooped up in a car brings out the worst qualities in the family: the grouchy father, the kids are annoying, and the grandmother is nostalgic and manipulative. On their way to look for a house that the grandmother claims to remember they become involved in a car accident. While waiting for help they encounter the Misfit, which happens to be an escaped convict. Many of the characters in the story think of themselves as good people based on moral codes that they stand by. These moral codes are deeply flawed, however, leaving each character blinded by their own self-righteousness. …show more content…

This emptiness can be interpreted as a reflection of the family's extreme situation they are dying in the middle of nowhere, without anyone to help them. The beautiful, cloudless day contrasts with the events that are happening under it; murders in the woods in the middle of nowhere should happen during a dark and stormy night, not a beautiful cloudless day. The sky is mentioned as an indicator of the characters' mood. Right after the Grandmother identifies The Misfit, comments, "Don't see no sun but don't see no cloud neither," implying that their fates have not yet been decided. Shortly after Bailey and John Wesley have been murdered, around the time that the Mother and June Star are being led into the woods, the Grandmother notices that "there was not a cloud in the sky nor any sun." This indicates that she has nothing from which to get her demeanor: "there was nothing around her but woods." She has no hope left. She has an idea of what her fate may become and has accepted it, “the grandmother who half sat and half lay in a puddle of blood with her legs crossed under her like a child's and her face smiling up at the cloudless sky.” This suggests that she found peace in her last few
