Casino’s are known for gambling, money, fun and chance. But have you ever wondered what it’s like working in one? Casino falls in the Hospitality Management cluster. There are several jobs within this area.For example, dealers, gaming supervisors, slot attendants, gaming runners/sports book writers, and gaming managers. The casino business it mainly works as a ladder. You work your way up to the highest job. One of the highest careers in the general manager, which happens to be the one that caught my attention.
General managers (GM) negotiate all of the activities and services offered at a casino. Ranging from personnel issues to creating and following a budget. Casino general managers work with human resources, accounting, marketing, security, housekeeping, food services and gaming departments in order to develop procedures and plans, observe activities and guarantee customers happiness. “The general manager of a casino is responsible not only for the gambling portion of the operation but also for the hotel and restaurants associated with it”, says Jim Bright, president of Bristol Associates. As for traveling, this career doesn’t have many requirements. The only travel there is to do is to find a location where there is a casino considering there are only 22 states with commercial casinos.
Like I mentioned before, the structure of a casino works as a ladder. To work as a general manager you would have to work at one of the lower jobs to gain experience. Infact, as a requirement you would have to have worked at a casino for 10-15 years. Training is also a general need in this career path. In fact, this excitement for gambling can be seen even from early ages; for example, ancient Egyptians used to play dice in 2000 BC or the first casinos opened their doors to customers during the Greeco-Roman period ( Whittaker and Cushman 1 ). Nowadays casino industry is a large business in the United States that brings high revenues and offers various entertainment that attracts people from different areas. So just recently residents and visitors of Worcester, Wicomico and surrounding counties got a great opportunity to try themselves in a new Ocean Downs casino that came into operation couple months ago. Ocean Downs casino is an excellent benefit to the community that helps to improve the economic and social status of the county and also serves as a great entertainment for the adult population.
The movie Casino produced by Martin Scorsese, is a movie based on the glories days of Frank Rosenthal (also known as "lefty") who ran the Stardust, Fremont and the Hacienda casinos in Las Vegas in 1970's. In this movie, Robert De Niro plays the role of Sam Rothstein, a top gambler who is called by the mob to oversee the day-by-day operations of the Tangiers Casino in Las Vegas, and then we got Joe Pesci playing Nicky Santoro, based on the real-life, Anthony (Tony the Ant) Spilotro (Encyclopedia casino (film)). Joe Pesci, is a good friend of Sam that has been called by the Mob to protect him, and at last but not less, Sharon Stone playing Ginger Mckenna, Sam Rothstein's wife. The movie mainly talks about how the Mafia has ruled the fictional Tangier Casino and having their own man in the count room skimming the money and sending it back to where the big bosses where. With Sam running the Casino, everything went smooth until the whole business turned out to its worst (Encyclopedia casino (film)). The first aspect that was chosen to talk about is the process and the way that the Mafia arranged to take part in Las Vegas and the second aspect will be based on one of the most popular gambling types called the Bookmaking which was illegal in United States with Las Vegas as an exception.
In the hilarious 2009 blockbuster hit The Hangover, “the three best friends that anyone could have” need to find a way to get the money they owe Mr. Chow in order to have the groom to be, Doug, returned to them. Phil, Stu, and Alan devise an intricate scheme that uses card counting while playing Blackjack to win a lot of money. The scheme uses many distractions such as Stu, and his stripper wife, acting as a distraction as well as Phil making lots of noise and obscene gestures to the cameras of the casino in order to bring attention to him and allowing Alan to do the card counting and win the money they owe Mr. Chow. When the casino managers begin to become suspicious of the possible card counting that is going on, Stu’s recently married stripper wife falls to the floor causing the security to focus on her giving Alan and Phil time to escape unseen with all the recently won cash. This scene, although entertaining, does not accurately portray what goes on when someone is card counting in these big time casinos, such as the one seen in this movie, Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas. Card counting is much more subtle and not such a big scheme as it is portrayed in this very funny movie.

An example of a strategic thinker would be if a major hurricane were to make land fall in the city. He or she would need to anticipate some of the possible concerns of the citizens might have during a major hurricane making land fall in the city. He or she must be able to think critically about how to get information out to citizens as quickly as possible, how to prevent major damage and ways to prevent possible deaths. He or she would need to interpret what is the possible affects of the amount of what that is forecasted during the hurricane. He or she would need to decide what actions must take place to keep the citizens of the city safe, out of harms way and most of informed. When the renovation is finally completed, it will seat up to 12,000 people for special events.
