In recent days, water crisis has been regarded as one of the catastrophic environmental issues beside pollution and biodiversity loss since the water itself is truly important for sustaining all beings living on the planet. When people overestimate the power of the knowledge of science by which they think all of problems can be solved, they overlook to analyze why and where are the problems coming out. In the other words, we can totally address the environmental issues only if we had found out the main source from where they are originated. In this critical commentary, I will seek out the main tumor rooted in the water crisis based on the analyzing two selected articles, which are “Chapter 3 Water and Water Peace from Making Peace with the …show more content…
In effect, “the implementation of the government’s technologies policies, and procedure has not proven to be effective or appropriate in the specific context of indigenous communities and indigenous people are often submerged and invisible in their own land since they do not have the right for providing their interest” (Jo-Anne, et al, 2013). To demonstrate, the problem is that government treats the water as something that has been commodified while the indigenous people take care of water as something having spirit. In the other words, when the government usually uses economic instrument that places price on water to address the water issue the indigenous people tell the public that we have to protect and respect water since it has spirit and intrinsic value. Indeed, the definition of key concept of indigenous knowledge is that the experience that local people have to live with the nature in harmony and is critical since it holds “a holistic worldview in which water is seen as part of a greater web of interconnected relations” (Jo-Anne, et al, 2013). In the other ways, anything, such as human, water, land, on the planet is a part of the whole ecosystem in which they are interconnected with each others. In addition, indigenous people had nominated women as the leaders in the revolution of respecting the spirit of water since they have the same characteristic of nurturing as the water has. In the other words, women give the birth and essential nutrient to their baby in the same way in which the water gives human basic support for living. As Jo-Anne, et al (2013) pointed out, “Women in this field bring to it a sense of humanity and a connection with other women who have a vested interest in the water, whether as people
The water crisis in Flint Michigan began as early as was as April of 2014. The crisis is concerning a small town called Flint, located at the bottom right of michigan were the majority of the population is African American. The issue began when the town 's water supply witch in past use to come from the detroit river water supply was switched over to the Flint river water supply. People soon began to complain about the taste, smell, and color of the tap water, and of symptoms such as hair loss and rashes from bathing in the water. Even though there were many signs that the water was indeed contaminated, such as when a General Motors plant in Flint stopped using municipal water in October of 2014, claiming that it corroded car parts, the government officials stated that the water was not a threat to the public 's health and safety. However it was later revealed that the water was in fact unhealthy, and contained too much lead. The issue was brought to the eyes of the public when Lee Anne Walters, a Flint resident. This mother of four had seen her family suffer from various alarming symptoms, including abdominal pains, hair loss, and rashes; she also has a son who showed signs of developmental problems. She decided to switch her family to bottled water, and the symptoms abated. Finally, in February of 2015, she demanded that the city test the tap water. A federal investigation was launched and the results came back shocking. The water was extremely toxic containing 400 parts per billion of lead. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), there is no safe level of lead in drinking water, but the maximum allowed by law is 15 parts per billion. Virginia Tech professor and engineer Marc Edwards, an expert on municipal w...
Every person requires water for survival. So what would happen if we ran out? North China is undergoing a serious water crisis, which holds a large part of China’s agriculture and population, with China’s government attempting to gain control of the situation they have decided to bring in water from the south. North China does have many factors contributing to it’s water issue at hand, however, in my opinion there are three main issues which the government should gain control of, or the three biggest causes of China’s crisis. these causes include urbanization, global warming, and the worst for last, industry.
The water crisis in Flint Michigan was a travesty of justice and could have been avoided. While examining this unfortunate incidence, the truth of what happened is clear, conscience and deplorable that the choice in cost-cutting measures would lead to contaminated water that was harmful to many.
China’s water supply is running out faster than it can be replaced. Water is being polluted by the environment, wasted because of the law, and a lot of water is being used due to it's growing industry. What is driving China’s water scarcity crisis? China's water scarcity crisis is mainly caused by the government mispricing water, industrialization, and urbanization.
“Over the last three decades, China has experienced breakneck growth, changing from a poor, agricultural country to one of the leading industrial powers of the 21st century. Yet water scarcity has the potential to undermine China’s transformation.”, BGE DBQ Online 2017. Water is a very important natural resource that the United States thankfully has access to everyday. In China, however, the economy is being plagued with an extreme growing crisis of water scarcity which has major complications on daily life. Three major factors that impact and make the situation in China worse is the growth in water pollution(document E), global warming and its effect on the water supply(document A), and lastly the way water is used throughout China( Document
Water shortage is a growing problem for most countries in the world. For China, which has 20% of world’s population and only 7% of available water resources, this problem may become catastrophic (Hofstedt 2010, 72). Therefore some actions and measures should be performed to avoid or at least to weaken future water crisis in China. In this work the following three solutions will be proposed and analyzed in terms of efficiency and applicability: water usage efficiency improvement; adopting the local agencies on controlling water resources; reasonable water pricing.
“People complained of the brown water. There were boil-water advisories after the water was found to have E. coli contamination, and the drinking water also had unsafe levels of a chlorine byproduct” In April 2014 Flint changed it’s water source, from Detroit water and sewerage department water to the Flint river. However, in the process the officials failed to apply the corrosion inhibitors which lead to flint’s water to be contaminated. Which, contains lead that causes a lot of health problems now in flint.
Have you’ve ever just been so thirsty, you just need to drink a tall cold glass of water?
The approach describes all the modern-day strategies developed and designed to support and enable the capability of the native communities in sustaining the friendly way of interacting with the environment. The description provides a clear picture of indigenous food systems in supporting the direct and indirect transfer of energy to the modern agriculture-based economy that was industrialized and developed by the settlers through the process of colonization (Working Group on Indigenous Food Sovereignty ). Embracing indigenous foods, the indigenous ways of food production, and agriculture is important especially in the contemporary society where genetically modified foods have resulted in negative health impacts, food insecurity, and development of environmental non-friendly policies in agriculture and food
Throughout history in North America, the indigenous peoples culture, tradition and religion have always differed from the western way of life. In this essay, I will explore two things. First, I will talk about the indigenous people’s view of the conservation of resources which can also be termed as the traditional ecological knowledge and the economist view of natural resources. Second, I will argue in this essay that by thinking of resources from the traditional ecological point of view, we can better understand why conserving our natural resources is important. I believe that we understanding why conservation of our natural resources is important will go a long way in helping us understand why our individual action affects our ecosystem.
According to Indigenous point of view, epistemology is created by three worlds such as physical, human and sacred (Foley, 2003). The physical world compresses with the land, the sky and the flora and the fauna which provide food and is the foundation of culture, spirit and identity of Indigenous tribes (Foley, 2003). Martin & Mirraboopa (2003) also supported the idea of Foley and he said that physical world play a vital role in Indigenous way of knowing. Furthermore, environment including mammals, birds, reptiles, insects or trees are part of being and the relatives of Indigenous people and they believe that they have responsibility to protect and conserve them (Martin & Mirraboopa, 2003). Martin & Mirraboopa (2003) also said that
There is a global shortage of drinking water. A person might wonder how this can be if seventy percent of the earth’s surface is covered by water. Most of the Earth’s water is unsuitable for human consuption. Ocean water is salt water, which makes up 97.5% of all water on the planet. Freshwater is only 3.5% of all the water on Earth. Drinking water is sourced from bodies of freshwater.
Clean and safe drinking water resources are becoming scarce as the population grows. The world is facing many problems, but the most important thing needed to survive, is water. Water is getting low in many countries, therefore residents are suffering the misfortune of not having the reliable source of clean water. Today many countries are having water shortages meaning rivers, lakes, streams and groundwater are not enough to rely on for supplying water demands. For example, California is facing a drastic water shortage, the natural water resources are not enough to fulfill their water demands.
The problem of water scarcity has increasingly spread throughout the world as of yet, The UN reports that within the next half- century up to 7 billion people in 60 countries which is more than the whole present population will face water scarcity (Sawin “Water Scarcity could Overwhelm the Next Generation”). As well the demand for freshwater has tripled over the past 50 years, and is continuing to rise as a result of population growth and economic development. 70% of this demand derives from agriculture which shows the influence of water on food supply globally as well not just drinking water (Sawin “Water Scarcity could overwhelm the Next Generation”). But increasing water use is not just a matter of the greater number of people needing it to drink and eat; it also comes from pollution and misuse of water supplies, by either dumping or runoff of bacteria or chemicals into water. This also “causes other pollutions as well such as soil and air pollution, accelerating wetland damage and human caused global warming” (Smith and Thomassey 25). According to UN report, recent estimates suggest that climate change will account for about 20 percent of the increase in global water scarcity in coming decades.
Water is an integral part of not only human beings but all other creatures in the world. We use it every day for different purposes such as domestic, agricultural and industrial. Water has always been a prestigious resource. However, the majority of people do not appraise water’s worth since they do not face water scarcity; whereas, in third world countries it is one of the most serious problems. Nearly 2.4 billion people have a lack of water resources in the world, shows the investigation done by the Pacific Institute, an Oakland, California-based non-profit scientific research group. Moreover, every year this number is growing gradually and more people are suffering (Bloomberg News, 2010). There are certain causes which deteriorate current situation. The most influential reasons are global warming, pollution by human-beings and overpopulation. It is known that India is one of the countries which face water scarcity so this essay will consider the possible ways of solutions of water shortage in India.
