Time Is Valuable

“My Mother at Sixty-Six” should be introduced in Engl-103 because it teaches the

students the value of time and time management for them. Time is really a wonderful thing. It is

satisfactory as it has no beginning or ending. All the things are born in time, grow in time, decay

in time, and die in time. Time moves at its own pace and cannot be according to anybody’s will.

Time does not wait for the president of any country, or citizen of any country; time has no pity

for either rich or poor. Time can neither be analysed nor criticised. Time management is

basically planning and controlling the amount of time spent of specific activities. If students

The poet feels regret which reminds her of her failure

i.e. not spending time with her mother, when she had time. Lines; “Driving from my parent’s /

home to Cochin last Friday” (1-2) tell us that poet is busy in her life and does not live with her

parents. She might be busy due to her work or any personal reasons. She fails to manage time

between her mother and her busy life. Now her mother is old and soon she will die. This teaches

students a lesson about managing time. Students get busy in their life. There is a lot work to do.

Some just study and score well but don’t have a social life. Some just have fun and don’t study.

Students may choose not to attend class due to incompatible goals, motivations, or expectations

which are distracting them from education. (Rochford, 2001). The outcome for them is their bad

grades. A study conducted with ninety students showed a positive result. Ninety students

completed a time-management survey in 1983. Their SAT scores were obtained from their

respective institutes. After four years in 1987 their grade point average (GPA) was obtained from

Human beings can be said to have three different stages

of life:- childhood and youth, adulthood and, old age. All these stages have different roles. For

example, childhood relates with all happiness and joy. Youth is full of energy. Adulthood refers

to the responsibilities. Old age refers to the time we cannot perform and it’s a sign that we will

die. It depicts that each period of life has a specific time period and, it must be utilized in proper

way. Students should spend time studying at school and not skipping lectures. They should

maintain a balance between academics and having good time with friends. Grades in college

courses depends on managing time between assignments, par-time jobs, due dates, weekly tests

and their personal life which includes friends and family.( Britton & Tesser, 1991). They can

perform best by managing time which they have been ignoring.

The poem will teach the students how to make the right use of time and not to waste it. It

will inspire them and will make them study after they realize the importance of time and know

about the consequences that can occur in their life if they don’t study. It can be either failing a

course or not getting a job due to poor
