Car crashes are one of the leading causes for death in many countries all around the world. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), “About 1.24 million people die each year as a result of road traffic crashes.” This number is increasing rapidly and the WHO predicts it will reach 1.9 million deaths annually by 2020. To put that into perspective, that is almost like the entire population of Latvia dieing out over the course of a year because of car crashes. Speeding and driving under the influence (DUI) are two other prominent reasons for road traffic collisions. It would be close to impossible to stop all crashes, so the best thing we can do now is to do what we can in order to protect the people facing these tragic occurrences. Airbags are like the little pillows hiding in the steering wheel and other places throughout the car. Although they have been in uses for more than ten years now, they are still saving thousands of live today. They have their flaws, but in my opinion they are still the most effective way to protect people from death or major injuries during a car collision. Physics plays a major role in both is growing problem and this relatively new solution. Whether it’s putting on the brakes of the car to use friction to your own advantage or the airbag being set into action by the force of another car ramming into the side of yours; physics is always there.
Without a doubt car accidents are one of the most prominent causes of death in middle income countries and it is the number one cause of death among young people ages 15 to 29. Everything these days can be a huge distraction, your phone and any other electronics can pose a deadly threat, if not handled correctly. Most governments put speed limits in plac...

Since becoming a mandatory safety feature in all new car in America in 1998, airbags have saved thousands of lives and prevented countless more injuries. Now that airbags are used in the majority of cars worldwide, no one would ever think about buying a car without them. It has a cultural value of safety, which would have been drastically different before the airbags became popular. Since these amazing safety pillows are small enough, car companies have been able to place them everywhere they find necessary to keep the passenger and driver as safe as possible. When you put the airbags to the test they can always adjust for size and distance of the traveler to ensure the people inside the car are greeted with a soft landing on a pillow, rather than being blasted, as if they were in the middle of a jet propelled pillow fight.
Over the past two decades the use of cell phones has grown significantly and statistic from the past two years have proven that driving while on the phone or texting is becoming one of the leading causes of traffic accidents today. In 2011, a survey of more than 2800 American adults revealed that even thought they know that using a cell phone or texting while driving is distracting, they do it anyway, and teens surveyed admit that texting while driving is their number one distraction. "Each year, 21% of fatal car crashes involving teenagers between the ages of 16 and 19 were the result of cell phone usage. This result has been expected to grow as much as 4% ...
Since the invention of the automobile, there have been many great innovations within the industry. The suspension of the automobile serves as a good example of one of those innovations. Could you imagine riding around in your brand new Nissan Skyline GT-R, with the same suspension methods used to stabilize old horse and carriage buggies centuries ago? That would not serve its purpose very well. Due to the demands of society, vehicle stabilization became a priority to increase safety. Throughout the years, there have been different variations of vehicle suspension systems. For example, we have adaptive air, solid axle, and dead axle suspensions. Without the advancements made in the way we travel and transport goods, civilization could not prosper the way it has.
The purpose of seat belts is to keep the passengers in the car during a collision, almost as if the passenger is a part of the car to avoid the passenger from flying out of the windshield causing damage according to the speed of the car it was travelling in. Seat belts are made of a flexible material, designed so the apparatus behind it will tighten up and hold the passenger in place during the very quick deceleration. It is designed so it rests over the passenger’s pelvis as well as the shoulder and across the chest (As Shown in Appendix One), and it applies the stopping force to reduce the damage on the passenger caused by collision. (Physics and Car safety, 2014) While the car is t...
According to the Journal of Applied Behavioral Analysis, "automobile crashes are the leading cause of death for those aged 3 to 33, with 43,005 (118 per day) Americans killed in 2002 alone" (Clayton, Helms, Simpson, 2006). Worldwide, vehicle accidents consist of 1.2 millions deaths per year, "behind only childhood infections and AIDS as cause of death amount people aged 5 to 30 years old" (Clayton., 2006). The annual cost of road accidents is estimated about $518 billion"(Factor, Yair, Mahalel, 2013). The fact alone of being in a moving, heavy vehicle is a danger in itself but individuals that do not wear their seat belts, talk on the phone, text, and do other distracting behavior also put themselves in even more harmful situations.
also been killed as a result of airbags. The time has come to ask ourselves,
Every person who has gets behind the wheel of a motor vehicle will be involved in some sort of automobile collision at some point in his or her lifetime. Traffic accidents account for over twenty thousand deaths each year and more than ten times as many injuries. There are a number of factors that contribute to these types of collisions, however, new and evolving laws can account for a large portion of successful preventable measures. In order for laws to be changed or added for the purpose of safer roads and highways, lawmakers have to first look at what factors contribute to such unsafe conditions. The top five causes of automobile accidents that cause injury are distracted drivers, driver fatigue, drunk driving, speeding, and aggressive driving. Laws can be proposed to reduce and even eliminate each of these risks.
When a person dies in an accident or become disable because of an accident, it is not only a single life will be effected by a preventive accident, it is about the emotional connection to those life of so many life who will be suffering because of the devastating accident. According to the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention, “In 2013, 2,163 teens in the United States ages 16–19 were killed and 243,243 were treated in emergency departments for injuries suffered in motor vehicle crashes.1 That means that six teens ages 16–19 died every day from motor vehicle injuries”(CDC). Today alarming numbers of teens are dying not because of drugs, not even from drinking and driving, but because of the accident which could have prevented. Today smartphone is gaining popularity on all ages, particularly among the teenagers, and these smartphone also fueled teens who were already engaging on phone while driving. Report published from American Psychological Association that, parents are having a direct role on distracting their kids while they were driving. Forty three percent of teens said that they talk to their parent while driving and another twenty six percent of teen text. ( in need intext citation )If we have so many data and research that are saying loud about the fatality number on distraction teens while driving, why parents are forcing their kids to die. According to the National Highway Traffic Administrations year 2011 report, teenager from age fifteen to nineteen years make ten percent of all drivers who involve in a fetal crash who were distracted while operation moto vehicle; most of them were using a cell phone (NHTSA 2015), we have to acknowledge the risk of our decision and that five seconds of time spending off of road to read a massage will cost a life and
“BREAKING NEWS, yet another driver dies from the distraction of texting while driving”. These stories are constantly on the news and seem to be inevitable. Car accidents are the leading cause of teen deaths in the United States combining with inexperience and distractions, such as texting while driving. No state bans all cell phone use for all drivers. Driving and the technology we have today are not a good combination, and there are phone applications and devices to prevent this conflict. “Over 16,000 people die each year and with the increase of technology in people’s daily lives this number is only going to increase”. More and more people die each day from the effect of texting while driving, it is time for the United States government to take a stronger stand and regulate more laws to reduce this number.
Driving has been around for just over 100 years, but the first thoughts of physics has been around since 400 BC (to be edited ). Driving safety implications have been discussed and improved over the decades as technology begins to leap ahead of its time. According to physician; Newton, there are three laws of motion that is now used in everyday life to try and help prevent deaths due to driving implications. The first law is “An object at rest will remain at rest unless acted upon on by an unbalanced force.” The object, or Car is in motion continues its motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force. The second law is “Acceleration is produced when a force acts on a mass.” While the third Law of Motion is : “ For every action there is an equal and opposite re-action.This means that for every force there is a reaction force that is equal in size, but opposite in direction.”
When it comes to cars, there are plenty of safety features incorporated by manufactures to ensure a smooth and safe ride. Some of these features seat belts, airbags, and antilock brakes. Nowadays, there have been great improvements to technology within cars to aid in the avoidance of collisions altogether. Examples of these technologies include blind spot detection, backup cameras, 360-degree cameras, and autonomous driving. Many of these newer safety features are there to avoid collisions. However, whenever a collision does occur, there is not much there to protect passengers in the rear of the car. Looking into this, there is evidence that shows that rear passengers do obtain injuries in collisions and pose the threat of contributing to others injuries. So, why are rear passenger airbags not standard in your vehicle?
People are constantly fixated on their phones, checking social media and texting and they seem to have become accustom to doing this wherever they please, whether it be at dinner, at work or in the car. The use of a cell phone while driving is extremely dangerous and destructive to not only the driver, but also everyone driving around them. Every year, twenty one percent of fatal car crashes involving teenagers between the ages of 16 and 19 were the result of using their cell phone while behind the wheel. This statistic is expected to grow as much as four percent every year. But, texting and driving is not just a problem among teen drivers. One-fifth of adult drivers in the United States also report sending text messages while driving (“Cell Phone & Texting Accidents”). To help fight this problem, the government needs much take a stronger stance and try to stand up against texting and driving to make the idea a bigger deal and implement harsher punishments, as well as stressing the damaging effects of texting and driving to children and teens early on in
Seat belt usage is a struggling problem today through out the United States. It is also lower then any other industrialized nation in the world. The best way to prevent a death in a motor vehicle accident is to wear a seat belt. Everybody has their opinions on safety belts and the laws that go with them, but until they prove them harmful, people recommend for occupants to wear it while in a vehicle. Still today people want it to be a national law for people to buckle up. Estimations from people all over the country prove that seat belts really help save lives. But also some safety belts have failed and have cause people to get trapped in the car. For instance, if someone happens to run off a bridge and go into the water, they would have to
Using seat belt when driving can help us to prevent death when an accident occurs.
Over the last few decades, the use of cell phones has become a very common tool. Furthermore, Technology has certainly advanced, and the cell phone is becoming the most preferred mode of communication. The demand for a cell phone is growing every day. In addition, the use of wireless technology is affordable, and anyone can buy a cell phone at a reasonable price. They come in all shapes and sizes. They range from black to bright metallic white. American public use of cell phones is increasing everyday. As the number of people using cell phones increase, the use of cell phones while driving will also increase on our streets and highways. At the same rate, motorists still converse on cell phones and write text messages while driving. Motorist will also engage in other activities apart from driving. For example, drivers will text when driving, and they will dial numbers. Drivers will receive calls and converse with the recipient for long periods. Again, driving demands your full attention, and your concentration needed when talking on the phone. However, it means that the driver has to divert his attention to the conversation, which leads to less concentration on the road. On the contrary, one can therefore connect motorist’s accidents and cell phone usage while driving.
Road safety is one of the most important aspects of daily living. Our vehicle is our main transportation from one place to another. The number of car and motorcycle accidents seem to be increasing because of the many distractions, the lack of safety measures and judgment to road conditions and weather. Not being cautious increases the chances of not only injuring ourselves but hurting others as well. On the road, you see people talking on their cell phones or texting, eating, putting makeup on, changing the radio station, reading or using your GPS while driving. These are all distractions that endanger drivers, passengers and bystanders safety. Safe driving involves off-road precautionary measures such as making sure tires are properly inflated, testing windshield wipers, getting regular oil changes and tune-ups and adjusting the mirrors. All of these actions can help prevent an accident. Unfortunately, not all of us decide to wear our seat belts when driving or turn signal ligh...
