Stephen King is often considered to be one of the most skilled horror authors of all time. King has shown his ability to write successful horror novels time and time again, having written such classics as Cujo, The Shining, and Pet Sematary. However, if one should seek to see a true testament to King’s skill at writing, then look no further than the two outliers in King’s work, Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile. Though King Primarily focused on horror novels ,these two stories deviated from that focusing more on drama than horror. Truly, Stephen King’s ability to take both Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile and have these stories stand on their own despite their similarities is a testament to King’s skill as a writer.

Tom Paine’s “Scar Vegas” takes place in a cheap Las Vegas hotel in the late twentieth century and shows the depressing life of a lonely ex-con. Traveling from Texas to Las Vegas for his sister’s wedding, Johnny Loop emerges as a simple, unlucky, depressed cowboy. Time after time it seems that Loop gets the short end of the stick. His dysfunctional background shapes his attitudes and interactions with others. Ironic, but a depressing ending leaves him helpless, alone, and frustrated. Sadly, it becomes obvious that he is not going to be able to turn his life around.
In Jim Jarmusch’s Dead Man, he pays homage to the classic style of western films while taking his own eccentric take that puts the film in a league of its own. With a combination of elements related to the western genre and a genre Jarmusch creates all on his own, the viewer can begin to explore and appreciate the unique film, Dead Man.

'Shawshank Redemption' directed by Frank Darabont is a compelling film about the life of one of its prisoners, Andy. many film techniques were used through out the film as a clever way of conveying main themes. One of the first and most significant films in American New Wave cinema, Arthur Penn’s Bonnie and Clyde (1967), revolutionized the movie industry by producing a motion picture mixed with graphic violence, humor, and moral ambiguity. With a similar revolutionary idea, Oliver Stone's Natural Born Killers (1994) used every cinematographic opportunity to disclose the incestuous relationship between crime, the media and pop culture. Although both films operate with similar themes such as undermining gender ideologies,…, and…;ultimately, Natural Born Killers acts as a development of Penn’s 1967 film, by displaying the characters Mickey and Mallory, as more aggressive and extreme versions of Bonnie and Clyde.
The novella, The Body, written by Stephen King is quintessential for portraying the overarching coming of age theme, however within this theme a more specific theme of innocence vs. experience is present. This theme can be seen within the book’s plot, symbols, and Chris Chamber’s character. Stephen King is known as one of the greatest horror and gothic writers of our time. The reason for this is his ability to fuse the gothic elements created by stories such as Dracula or Frankenstein and todays horror. King has written hundreds of short stories but two in-particular “The Night Flier” and “Popsy” show his unique ability to combined gothic elements from the old literature with realistic settings and people of our era. One of his greater talents is being able to use gothic element like vampires and make us see them in a different light. Kings unique way of writing with his old gothic ideals, new horror ideas, and use of realistic settings help to put a new spin on what we conceive as gothic story.
Many people today have read Stephen King’s horror novel The Shining and enjoyed his use of literary devices, but what about the techniques that transferred into Stanley Kubrick’s film? First, The Shining is about an already dysfunctional family, that move into a hotel because the father, Jack Torrence, has gotten a job as the caretaker of the hotel. Before taking the job, Jack is informed that the previous caretaker got “cabin fever” and killed his entire family. His son, Danny Torrence, is psychic and telepathic and begins to see and be bothered by the spirits living in the hotel. These spirits eventually possess Jack and he too tries to kill his family, which also includes his wife, Wendy Torrence.

With the complications of time restriction in major motion pictures, a full-length novel is compacted into a two-hour film. This commonly leads to the interference in the sequence of events, alternation of plots and themes, and the elimination of important characters or events. But the one true adversary of novel-based films is Hollywood fabrication. Producers, directors, and playwrights add or eliminate events and characters that might or might not pertain to the storyline for the sake of visual appeal, therefore defacing the author’s work.
In conclusion the movie The Green Mile captures the stereotypical black man as they were seen in the pre-Civil Rights era. Duncan’s character could have not been more of a insult to the black community. People of color should not be discriminated against for haw they look, like any other race they are intelligent and beautiful people with a rich culture that dates back thousands of years. This movie, though good, has its racial intonations. The character John Coffey was an innocent man who got caught in the crossfire of the race wars.
Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining” presents the audience a twisted tale of a man named Jack Torrance and his wife Wendy and son Danny, who spend a few winter months in isolation as caretakers of the Overlook hotel. This is no typical horror movie. Viewers are slowly lead though a slow film journey following the Torrance family in their moments of horror and insanity with help from bizarre events connected to the haunted Overlook Hotel.
