The two books that I chose to read for this assignment were A Century of Spies: Intelligence in the Twentieth Century and The Rape of Nanking: The Forgotten Holocaust of World War II. Both books are consistent with themes two and three. I was lucky enough to have chosen two books that have similarities with their time period, World War II. The book, A Century of Spies: Intelligence in the Twentieth Century written by Jeffery T. Richelson, focuses more on the governmental standpoint of the war specifically, spies that were sent out during the war and what their roles were. While the The Rape of Nanking: The Forgotten Holocaust of World War II written by Iris Chang, focuses more on the governmental power to torture people and how they did in war. Both of these books successfully portray the two world history themes one and three, together they help the understanding of the power of governmental rule in World War II and help to reveal secrets of the certain governmental strategies during the war. A Century of Spies: Intelligence in the Twentieth Century teaches the tactics of government spies during WWII. In part two of the book the first chapter is called “Intelligence and Onset of the War”. This chapter, chapter seven, shows theme two and theme three by describing specific technologies of the intelligence collection of the 1930’s and how they “failed”. This idea that the intelligence collection failed is shown through certain main events that helped to develop the beginning of the war such as Pearl Harbor, Barbarossa, and The Pact. Theme two is shown through the technologies of the governments such as the descriptions of warfare tactics used specifically in Hitler’s, as many times the Nazi’s were underestimated and specific gov... ... middle of paper ... ...chapter describes the events in which people were either killed or raped, very descriptively these chapters described these events. Theme one is shown by the way in which the way of the life of these people is so horrible to even just read. While theme three is shown through the way the military controls the ways of governing and torturing in Nanking. The last chapter I read was the last chapter in Part I “The Nanking Safety Zone”. This chapter is dedicated to those who truly tried to help to save the people of Nanking, two including a teenage doctor and good hearted Nazi. This chapter shows theme two by showing that even though someone may be on the other side (the Nazi) they still have a heart to try to save people. While this chapter shows theme three byt describing the ways that even in times of conflict and horror one person can influence a community as a whole.
