The case study of Kuala Lumpur is taken from the research of Juriah Zakaria, Comfort of Walking in the City Centre of Kuala Lumpur, 2014. In Kuala Lumpur, the city centre has many interesting places to visit. However, the attractions are separated from each other and certain functions differently (Wong, 2011). A study by the Public Publicity shows that the Greater Kuala Lumpur, Klang Valley is not pedestrian friendly because it currently has a design that is inefficient, inadequate maintenance and poor access and relationships. Area attractions also are not easily accessible, inadequate facilities for pedestrians and divided (DBKL, 2004). These problems may hinder opportunities for visitors to experience the city with a greater sense of enjoyment …show more content…
However, it has been observed that the relationship between tourist attractions very weak and faulty connection. This will encourage visitors to explore other parts of the city centre with walking.
In the centre of Kuala Lumpur has a variety of public transport links to connect people to their destinations. Most of the tourist attractions in the city centre is connected with public transport nodes, especially rail based transit system. In addition, these factors make it easier for visitors to access one destination to another. In addition, a transit station to popular landmarks such as Dataran Merdeka, Petronas Twin Towers, Masjid Jamek and Pasar Seni distance and easily accessible on pedestrian.
Walking may vary among users depending on the willingness of users to walk and comfort level. According to Weinstein et al. (2008) suggest that in a variety of contexts walkable distance west of the 0.12 kilometres to 0.4 kilometres, but it is expected that a tropical Asian city is lower due to the hot and humid conditions. Photo 2.11 shows an elevated walkway and have air conditioning lines connecting KLCC and Pavilion KL (near Jalan Bukit Bintang) to provide comfortable walking between places. However, the study found that the road network in the city centre of Kuala Lumpur lack of continuity and

Safety of walking
Pedestrian safety is one important factor to encourage people to enjoy the environment of the city on pedestrian walkways. Based on the analysis found that the majority of respondents (61.0%) are satisfied with the condition of the pavement in the study area. The results also show that most of them (60.0%) are satisfied with the freedom to walk with a slight hitch. 26.0% of respondents are not satisfied with the traffic safety, and 21.8% are not satisfied with the safety of strangers.
According to Kumar (2010), the safety and quality of the walkways affected walkability. Contrary to the findings of the current, previous studies by Shamsuddin et al. (2012) showed that certain areas in the city centre has been provided with a safe walkway and spacious, while other areas depending on the width of the remainder of the way to make walkways. Observation of the physical condition of the pavement in the centre is consistent with previous studies by Shamsuddin et al. (2012), Mahmoudi, and Abbasi (2011). Not all areas are safe because of the pedestrian sidewalk inappropriate, inadequate signage, paving and flooring
The infrastructure in West Main Street is not dissimilar to City Road in regards to the street bollards which have been introduced to stop vehicles parking on the pavements. Pedestrian islands are another similarly regular sight throughout the street. (‘The Street’, 2009, Scene 1) Both these material things are there to ensure the safety and ease of pedestrians while drivers may find these a nuisance as they are restricted to the small amount of parking bays along the street instead of parking on the pavement for convenience, consequently resulting in an inequality amid the public. There is a steady flow of traffic through the street of which most are cars but there are a lot of busses as well. The busses seem to be in favour of...
...urist town presents new opportunities. New people are coming into town and old ones are leaving making the chance of seeing the same person twice a rarity. This however is a way of life for many people. They wake up every morning ready to serve the customers that come through their door. This conscious effort of serving a customer does pay off as small businesses continue to thrive off sales generated by tourists. Therefore, stop and think next time you pull into a tourist town and realize what your business means to each store.
This essay focuses upon evidence gathered from people who provide good examples of ‘making and remaking’ on City Road in relation to connections and disconnections. Evaluations are drawn from the relevant Open University reading and visual resources and the essay is revised following ‘TMA 01 feedback’ (TMA FORM PT3e: TMA No 01, 2016).
Families each day walk around the neighborhood to different activities such as the playgrounds, the basketball courts, and the pool. The problem is when residents have to walk to different places there are no safe places to cross the road. Currently there are no painted crosswalks or even pedestrian crossing signs. This can cause a major safety concern for residents and drivers. Children and teens can be affected largely by this due to the school bus dropping them off at the entrance of the neighborhood where they eventually have to cross the street. Marked crosswalks are an essential tool for helping pedestrians move safely, conveniently and predictably across roadways. Crosswalks can also provide a unique streetscape design treatment to emphasize pedestrians’ presence and primacy (crosswalks). Also, a lack of crosswalks creates an unsafe
Istanbul, as told, is an extremely crowded city with over 14 million citizens living in just 5,343 square kilometers (“Istanbul”). Around 11.5 million passengers travel all around Istanbul every day (“İstanbul`da Toplu Taşıma”). The fact that the city is divided into two different sides by the Marmara Sea makes the traffic even worse. The 1.4 km long undersea tunnel is now operating in order to reduce the amount of traffic at the two Bosphorus bridges along with the underground tunnel. The total length of the rail line will be 76.3 km with 40 stations, but n...
It needs to improve its areas of “walkability” and encourage health and environmental factors by adding bike lanes to the heavily biked Church Street. Its roads are not overburdened and its public transit systems are frequent, and highly accessible. One factor to be drawn from this conclusion is that Church and Wellesley’s overall transportation success is not indicative of the GTA as a whole. In fact, its success is the result of government policies that have abetted a focus on highly trafficked, highly populated, highly profitable areas such as the Downtown Core (Keil, Roger, Young, 2008). In the article, Urban Form and Travel Behavior as Tools to Assess Sustainable Transportation in the Greater Toronto Area, the authors conclude that the GTA is headed in a negative direction, and that the goal of sustainable transportation will not be met or improved in the future under the current policies and trends. Overall, the symptoms of Church and Wellesley, although beneficial to the BIA locals, could be seen as a symptom of an greater problem with the city’s transit system that needs to be addressed through political, bureaucratic, and organizational reform ((Zaidan, Esmat, Abdelgadir, Abulibdeh,
Utopia is an imagined place where human desire and feel satisfy. According to Mumford (1922), the idea of utopia is reconstructing over time. The change of ideology over time might cause by the economy, politics, living environment and social status. Urban planning is a ‘laboratory’ of cogitating city futures from the old utopian thought (Ganjavie, 1922). The existing cities are often built on the ideas that people desired in the past and improving by the arising ideas and needs. The more needs that are required to satisfy, the more the city should evolve as an urban area. One of the important components of urban development is the enhancement transportation technology. It is believed that transportation gives different level of impact on cities and lifestyle throughout the history. First, the essay will demonstrate how did the transportation reformed city in the history. Second, it will discuss the capacity of transportation to further reshape the urban form. Third, the essay will argue how does the transportation technology impact individuals.
We all use vehicles for transportation. People usually go to their desired destination either by driving their own cars or traveling in public transportation. Actually, it might be tough to choose that which one is the best selection for people to travel. Many people choose one of them according to their comfort while traveling and both of them have advantages and disadvantages in different conditions. Public transportation and driving own car both shares differences and similarities in many aspects, such as facility, cost, and comfort as well as traffic jam and accident occurrence.

The impact of transport infrastructure on the land-use policies can be seen from the formation of the rapidly changing urban landscape, this is related to the land-use rezoning, including residential, commercial, and industrial site for living, work, shopping and leisure activities, the modes of travel that commuters use to access these places of employment, shopping and entertainment is a private vehicle dominated area, with a low utilization of public transportation. Modes of public transportation that are used are mini-bus taxis and to a lesser extent busses. A relatively large number of people access employment, shopping and entertainment opportunities by foot. These pedestrians are potential user of the planned BRT system within the
For example, Coveney and O’Dwyer (2009) have stated that walking was not safe, especially when there were no pedestrian crossings. Public transportations can carry people to supermarkets, however, it is difficult to carry shopping bags on and off the public transportations, especially during the rush hours. It is a good idea to arrange transportations with friends, neighbors and/or family members. However, taking the same car with other friends and neighborhoods also caused some issues, because there is lack of self-reliance and independence when transporting with friends. Therefore, shopping behaviors will deeply influence by personal/family cars, especially for those who have carried their children to shopping centers (Coveney & O’Dwyer,
Tourism is an important and intricate element to society. It affects economical, social, cultural and environmental elements. If there are more people, more, density, and a good mixture of uses, it will be a safer city... You cannot find a single city that does not wish to make the city center more vibrant or livelier.” This quote from Jan Gehl, the principal of Gehl Architects, illustrates the importance of having a sustainable city. The Central Park project has showcased to the world on how the landscape we design or occupy, can affect our daily activities and surrounding neighborhood. It sets an example of how design must be appreciated as a crucial factor in sustainability and emphasized on the fact the connection of people and nature should not be ignored. All in all, landscape architects are the ones to determine the physical characteristics of the public realm environment, to decide whether a city is attractive to people and whether people will choose to live in the city in the long
