Right now, thousands of women face a life changing decision, whether to follow through with a pregnancy or going through the process of abortion. An abortion is the process of removing an unborn offspring, known as a fetus, from the woman’s uterus in order to terminate the pregnancy. The confrontational topic is divided between the views of pro-life and pro-choice. Advocates for pro-life strongly believe that the unborn baby should be protected. Whereas, pro-choice supporters believe the decision of what happens to the unborn baby is completely a right of the woman. After analyzing the bioethical implications of abortion, through the legal verses illegal and choice verses life stances, one will perceive that laws should be governed in support of pro-choice across the nation. It is essential for today’s society to have knowledge on all the potential options for abortion. There are two types of abortion, medical abortion and surgical abortion. Medical abortions involve the woman taking medications or pills to result in an early miscarriage. Within the first 9 weeks the woman only feels a heavy and/or painful period after the abortion, but if after 9 weeks it “involves taking medicines to cause the womb to contract and push out the pregnancy; from 22 weeks on an injection to womb is also required” (What is an Abortion?). A sometimes-common pill taken is “the morning after pill.” This is for emergency purposes; if one has unprotected sex, taking this pill may prevent pregnancy. A surgical abortion is physically removing the fetus. The Vacuum Aspiration procedure can be done within the first 15 weeks of pregnancy and is “removing pregnancy by gentle suction and can be done awake or asleep” (What is an Abortion?). The topic on abortion gives a moral objection to a fetus’ right to life, while it is questionable whether or not the death of the unborn child is unjustifiable. Although it may seem as if abortion puts women in situations where it is necessary to save the mother’s life in some situations. Until both pro-life and pro-choice can come to a conclusion and an agreement, this debates on abortion will continually go on. Both sides need to be able to draw the line somewhere and balance each other’s weakness.

Over the course of the last century, abortion in the Western hemisphere has become a largely controversial topic that affects every human being. In the United States, at current rates, one in three women will have had an abortion by the time they reach the age of 45. The questions surrounding the laws are of moral, social, and medical dilemmas that rely upon the most fundamental principles of ethics and philosophy. At the center of the argument is the not so clear cut lines dictating what life is, or is not, and where a fetus finds itself amongst its meaning. In an effort to answer the question, lawmakers are establishing public policies dictating what a woman may or may not do with regard to her reproductive rights.

When an abortion occurs, the medical doctor removes the fetus from the pregnant woman. This particular act has separated the public. Many believe that abortion is not morally and ethically correct. On the other hand, some people believe that carrying and delivering the unborn child will hinder the safety of the mother, then an abortion is needed. Each view has its own merit in the debate. This debate has separated the public into two sections: pro-life and pro-choice. Abortion, which is defined as a deliberate termination of a human pregnancy, is one of the most controversial issues in society. Many people believe that abortion is unethical and morally wrong, while others believe that it is a woman’s right to decide what to do with her body. According to www.census.gov, “the number of abortions performed annually in the U.S. has leveled off at 1.2 million a year” (1). This statistic supports how many women are choosing abortion. Although abortion is legal in the United States, many people continue to voice their opinions on how it is a human rights violation and should be illegal everywhere.
Thou shalt not kill; one-tenth of what may arguably be the most famous guidelines of morality in the western culture, and also the main driving force for pro-life advocates. The argument supporting their beliefs typically starts with the premises that a fetus is a person, and to destroy or to kill a person is unethical. Therefore abortion, the premeditated destruction of a human being, is murder, and consequently unethical. I deny the fact that the fetus, what I will refer to as an embryo up to 22 weeks old, has the right to live. The opposing argument is invalid because a fetus, although perhaps a part of human species, is not formally a person. This leaves it simply to be a part of the woman?s body, whose fate lies solely in the hands of the pregnant woman alone, no different from a tumor she might have. By proving this, the abortion debate then becomes an issue of women?s rights, something that is most controversial indeed. Furthermore, it is fair to question the credibility of many people against abortion because of obvious contradictions in the logic of their belief systems. The fact that this debate is relevant in modern society is ludicrous since there is a simple and plausible solution to this problem that could potentially end the debate for good, leaving both sides satisfied.

Abortion is a voluminous topic today all around the world. Differing viewpoints on abortion are recognized in politics, religion, and throughout the general population. There is a small amount of people who are nonchalant on the subject. Women have abortions for many different reasons and according to certain groups these reasons are either justified or not. Everyone tends to have their own articulated opinion, and many vocalize tenaciously what they believe. Pro-life individuals along with religion are sanguine that abortion is ethically and morally erroneous. Whereas those who are pro-choice say that abortion is inconsequential and the mother’s choice is more important than the fetus. One of the most controversial issues in this day and age is the stance people take on abortion.
