The Coast Guard (CG) is the nation’s smallest armed service and most misunderstood armed service. Most Americans know the Coast Guard is the nation’s premiere lifesaving service. Some may even know that the Coast Guard is the nation’s oldest continuing sea going service. While the Coast Guard falls under the UCMJ just like the other four branches, and often works side by side with them especially the Navy; The Coast Guard is usually trained for a very different mission than their DOD counterparts in times of peace. This paper will shed light on the Coast Guard’s accomplishments and its sacrifices in its National Defense mission. The legal basis for the Coast Guard to operate as a military force is Title 14 of the United States Code, which states: "The Coast Guard as established January 28, 1915, shall be a military service and a branch of the armed forces of the United States at all times." Upon the declaration of war or when the President directs, the Coast Guard operates under the authority of the Department of the Navy.” The Coast Guard can trace its beginnings back August 4th 1790. On this date president George Washington, at the urging of Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton, ordered the building of ten ships. Those ten ships would be called the Revenue Cutter Service (RCS). The purpose of these ships was to enforce tariff regulations and bolster the coffers of the newly formed United States. It is the nation’s oldest continuing sea going service. These ships would be used to “cut off” smuggling in and out of the U.S. The term “cutter” is still used today to describe any Coast Guard vessel 65’ or longer. The RCS was first pressed into service during the undeclared Quasi War with France in 1798-99. The United States of America has been involved in many different conflicts, foreign and domestic, popular and unpopular, spanning across four centuries and all corners of the globe. From the warm coastal waters of the American homeland to the atolls of the Pacific, from the winding inland rivers of Vietnam to the chokepoint at the Strait of Hormuz, American sailors have valiantly stood up to defend America’s interests at home and abroad. The Navy has had to continuously update its vessels and technologies in order to keep up with the rapidly changing times, and ensure we not only stay competitive with but surpass the foreign competition. No other period in history has undergone the swift technological evolution that our troops experience today, and outfitting our soldiers with the best equipment money can buy and the most up-to-date training must remain a top priority. As sequestration and budget cuts slash $487 billion from the Department of the Navy’s budget over the next 10 years, it is more evident than ever how detrimental these budget cuts can be on the sailors of today and tomorrow alike. Significant cuts to the Naval budget will jeopardize the readiness of our ships and sailors, impair our ability to maintain strategic assets ready for forward deployment in critical areas, and constrict our ability to acquire new and improved technology.

Military to ever take on a law enforcement role with the boundaries of the United States. To put it another way, our country and our states have multiple levels of law enforcement agencies that can handle any situation they are presented with. Some agencies specialize in specific areas, while others provide more of general service. Each state has basically mirrored its’ approach to law enforcement in many ways based on the federal approach. Meaning, most states have a state bureau of investigation, a state office of homeland security, state level emergency management agencies and general service state police agencies. It is for the this reason that there should never be a need for the U.S. Military to take on a law enforcement
The United States Marine Corps is known as one of the worlds most elite fighting groups. Marines are looked highly upon by most people in American society. However, The Marine corps has had a rough journey since their birth date on November 10th, 1775. While the American people felt and still feel that the Marine Corps are vital in our military. Though the Marine Corps was formed originally for amphibious warfare they have proven themselves powerful “in every clime and place”. Some however feel the United States should integrate the Marine Corps into the United States Army believing that both are performing the same tasks and that having another branch is just causing the defense budget to be stretched out amongst all branches. This is one of the reasons the Marine Corps has been disbanded in the past along with peace time movements were the United States Navy was also disbanded. Even with the Marine Corps’ struggle to remain one of Americas elite fighting forces the people have always rallied behind them to keep them afloat.
To meet future challenges and opportunities the Department of Defense (DOD) must decide how to adjust the armed forces structure in an austere economic environment. Based on current strategic direction and fiscal constraints, the general force structure and capabilities necessary to rebalance Joint Force 2020 is a smaller but fully integrated joint military organization. The 2014 Quadrennial Defense Review (QDR) emphasizes US military power will evolve and remain modern, capable, and ready while accepting some increased risk through force reductions. Rebalancing will require innovative approaches and solutions to protect the homeland, build global security, project power, and win decisively with a leaner organization.
There are many people that protect America like the army and the navy. Both the army and navy are a part of america but one is better. The army. The army is better than the navy in many ways. The army is very important to the USA. Without it we would be attacked and how would we help ourselves. There are other countries that rely on our supplies therefor they would help us but we can't just count on anyone else. This is why the navy is important as well. Incase they send boats or sometimes planes to attack us.
During the early 1900s, the primary missions of the Coast Guard was the “saving of life and property at sea…protection of the revenues…and military readiness” (Willoughby 21). When the importation and sale of alcohol was banned, the Coast Guard faced the problem of heavily patrolling over 6,000 miles of coastline (Canney 3). In 1923, Commandant William Reynolds called for an enlargement of the service, because the “present force was able to ‘prevent only a small part’ of the illegal traffic” (Canney 6). The addition of 203 cabin cruiser motorboats and 91 small motor boats, as well as 3500 additional personnel resulted in a price tag of $14 million (Canney
According to todaysmilitary.com, “The U.S. Military consists of five active-duty Services . . . The Army, Marine Corps, Navy and Air-Force fall under the jurisdiction of the Department of Defense (DoD). The Coast Guard reports to the Department of Homeland Security during peacetime and DoD during wartime.” All five of these Services are vital to our country and deserve to be recognized for how they help create a safe country for us Americans.

Over the summer, I spent a week at the United States Naval Academy participating in the Summer Seminar program. Created to replicate life as an actual plebe, the Summer Seminar gives an opportunity for rising seniors to experience the Academy for themselves as they hope to attend the school. Visiting the campus for the first time, I finally witnessed the historical implications of the campus for myself. While walking through the hallways of history, I gazed upon the diverse landscape of the rural Annapolis area. Situated at the confluence of the Chesapeake Bay and the Severn River, USNA lies on a flat area suited for training. Individuals use many different hills and walking trails. Both the military and the moral aspect of the school separates the Academy from other rigorous schools. This principle of moral and military respect derives from the mission of the Naval Academy. According to the Naval Academy mission , “To develop Midshipmen morally, mentally and physically and to imbue them with the highest ideals of duty, honor and loyalty in order to graduate leaders who are dedicated to a career of naval service and have potential for future development in mind and character to assume the highest responsibilities of command, citizenship and government."
