Estonia woke during the early period of her people’s settlements, and she travelled with them until she was found later by a man visiting her country’s boundaries. He gave her the name Aestii. This man, she later learned was named, Tacitus, a Roman historian. After she was given this name, Estonia sneaked around and looked for people like her - those that did not age, as Tacitus had mentioned meeting some like her. Before the Vikings began to invade, she managed to find and befriend, Finland, and much later after some incident, Hungary.
When the Viking Raids began, Estonia opted to move away from the home she had made and live farther out of reach of those invaders, as per requests from Hallar and Anu, a couple that she had been friends with. Of course, this did not much as she was visited by both Denmark and Prussia who had come to ‘Christianize’ her. Estonia fought this for all she was worth but in the end, she was taken over by the Danes, and partly by the Teutonic Knights, where she was forced to learn the Christian teachings. She disliked almost every moment as this new faith made no sense to her. She has never quite taken to it.
Estonia lived with Denmark before Prussia came and took her to live with the Teutonic Knights and Livionia, who was said to be related to her, but she doesn’t really care. Most of the time, her days were used to argue and argue until she got sent to a room. It was around this time, that she became accustomed to being alone and reading/listening to stories. It was also around this time, that Estonia began thinking about running away and hiding in the wild until she could control her own nation. After a while, Estonia began to feel tugging and burning around her skin as her country w...

It took many movements from her people, over many years, but finally in 1988, her people declared sovereignty and Estonia snuck away from Russia’s home to take part in the ‘Baltic Chain’ and Singing Revolution. In 1990, she faced Russia once more as her people revolted and began to transition to an independent state. This did not end Russia’s involvement in her politics though and for a year, the KGB invaded her home and created havoc until the night in August 1991, when the Soviet Government collapsed, leading to complete independence, almost literally overnight. It was at this time, that Estonia began to feel the weight leave her back.
Though it wasn’t until the armed forces of Russia’s withdrew that she finally breathed a breath of fresh air, it was still nice to begin the process of learning to live again.

Katya had lost everything that her family owned and was forced to move to another country, where she had to start a new life from scratch. Even though she had relatives living in Canada, it was not an easy task. Just like other immigrants to Canada, she had to face many difficulties, like the learning of the new language, and adapting to the new lifestyle. Many years later, she came back to her homeland to visit the places she grew up in. After more than fifty years she still remembered the tragedy that suddenly ended the happy life of her family.
This translation tells a wonderful tale and it is amazing that it has been preserved for this amount of time. Byock does a fantastic job of editing and telling his story. His introduction sets the stage very well, as it gives historical and cultural insight into his work. Several important lessons can be taken from the work and applied to the study of medieval Norse peoples. One of the most important aspects is the role that fate and divine intervention have on the lives of everyday man and that nothing happens by accident. The guidance of Odin and the reliance on fate are echoed throughout the work and serve as the backdrop for each characters action. This insight allows historians to dig into the narrative and extract special significance from the text.
Leif Erikson’s grandfather, Thorvald Asvaldsson slaughtered a man in Jæren, Norway in 960 CE. This was the age of the Vikings, but Thorvald was still banished from the land (Mandia, n.d.). So he brought his ten year old son Erik, later to be named as Erik the Red because of his scarlet hair, to Drangar in northwestern Iceland on a farm with rather appalling soil (Where is Vinland?, n.d.).

The 1992-93 Georgia-Abkhazia war can best be understood as stemming from parallel movements for national liberation that contradicted one another. The Georgians asserted their independence from Russian control. Simultaneously, the Abkhazians sought closer ties with the Russians in order to assert their independence from Georgian control. Although both sides had attempted these actions in the past, the tumultuous
Five hundred years before Columbus, a group of vikings were led by Leif Erikson. Leif Erikson was born in Iceland, the son of Eric the Red. He moved with his parents to Greenland in 986. Denmark As one of the oldest states in Europe, Denmark has not only witnessed many great philosophical, religious, and literary periods that were experienced all around the globe, but they also contributed immensely. Today Denmark is an internationally recognized dominion, know for everything from fabulously low unemployment rates to sleek and modern arcitulutal design (Badenhausen).
As a result of the Cold War, the Soviet Union collapsed. In December of 1991, the Soviet Union broke into fifteen separate countries. The collapse of communist governments in Eastern Europe inspired ethnic groups within the Soviet Union. Gorbachev created a policy that allowed these ethnic groups to spread. Because of this, the hard-liners tried to over through Gorbachev with a military coup. This did not work. Under Gorbachev’s reforms, people had lost fear and wanted to fight for their freedom- Russians upset the coup. In December of 1991, Gorbachev resigned from his position as president.

Albania, a small country located in Southeastern Europe, is a nation that does not have a true identity – its people are Muslim and Christian, it is a country that is both and poor, it is as much urban as it is rural, and has evolved from monarchy to socialism and now to fledgling democracy. In other words, Albania and its people have seen it all. The extremes of Albanian society are vivid, and underlying tensions are evident. But Albania is not “another Yugoslavia” – there is no doubt that the internal environment of Albania has been and somewhat continues to be tense, although the breaking point has never been fully reached. Albania is a country with a fervently tense past (especially during the Cold War era), yet many people do not know about it, and few would be able to find the country on the map. Despite its beautiful during, its plentiful natural resources, and its extraordinary tradition of hospitality, Albania has always been “the most isolated country in Europe and from World War II until very recently, one of the most isolated countries on earth” (“Real Adventures – Albania” 1).

Sweden has a fascinating history. The Vikings from Sweden traveled in boats and carried out surprise attacks on enemies (Lerner 21). The origin of today?s democracy in Sweden originated from the Vikings (22). By the end of the 1800?s Sweden was in great economic danger. With an unemployment rate of one point six, Sweden?s jobs were in short supply (40). In the elections of 1991, Carl Bidlt became Sweden?s prime Minister. He worked to curd Sweden?s economic problems, and it worked (41). Sweden was back to normal in no time.
