William Shakespeare's Biography William Shakespeare (1564-1616): Though William Shakespeare is recognized as one of literature's greatest influences, very little is actually known about him. What we do know about his life comes from registrar records, court records, wills, marriage certificates and his tombstone. Anecdotes and criticisms by his rivals also speak of the famous playwright and suggest that he was indeed a playwright, poet and an actor. William was born in 1564. We know this from the earliest record we have of his life; his baptism which happened on Wednesday, April the 26th, 1564.
William was pulled from school and apprenticed to a trade, not an uncommon occurrence during the Elizabethan Age. William Shakespeare married Ann Hathaway in November 1582 at the age of eighteen. Anne was twenty-six. It would only be six months later that their daughter, Susanna was born. William also had a set of twins in February 1585.
Their first child was, a daughter who was named Susanna, born on May 26, 1583. They had twins, Hamnet and Judith, two years later on February 2, 1585. "After the birth of the twins, there are seven years of William Shakespeare's life where no record exist" (William Shakespeare Biography). A tragedy stuck this family when Hamnet died at the age of eleven due to an unknown cause. " In 1597 he was able to purchase a large house, New Place, in his native town" (Encyclopedia International).
Will was 18 and Anne was 26, she was also pregnant with their first child, a daughter they named Susanna; born on May 26,1583. Two years later, on February 2, 1585, twins Hamnet and Judith were born. Hamnet later died of unknown causes at age 11. After the twins were born, there are 7 years of William’s life where no records exist. Many call this period the “lost years” and there are many theories behind what he did for those years.
Anne Hathaway was said to be from Shottery. Shakespeare and wife had eight children, including daughter Susanna, twins Hamnet, Judith, and Edmund. Susanna received most of the Bard's fortune when he died in 1616, age 52. Hamnet died at age 11, Judith at 77. William’s grandfather, Richard Shakespeare was a whittawer and a dealer in agricultural commodities. Richard died 52 days after the birth of William. William attended the Stratford Grammar School. Even though the record-of- attendance have been lost it is no doubt that he truly attended the school, since the school was built and maintained expressly for the purpose of education the sons of prominent citizens. Because William attended church, the other obvious education is the exposer to either the Geneva Bible or the Bishops’ Bible or King James.
His father was a rather successful tradesman, glove maker, and public figure. His mother was the daughter of a farmer. William was the third of eight children of John and Mary, although the two siblings before him died in infancy. Another younger sibling died before the age of ten. “Scholars have surmised that he most likely attended the King's New School, in Stratford, which taught reading, writing and the classics” (Bio).
