OJ Simpson OJ Simpson, one of football’s most legendary players, was admired and extolled by many sports-lovers from across the nation. From being selected as the number one player in the 1969 draft to being named NFL’s Player of the Year three times, he led a life of success and fame (CNN.com). Yet behind this renowned MVP, there stood a dark side. In June of 1994, Simpson was arrested for allegedly murdering his wife, Nicole Simpson, and family friend, Ronald Goldman. Simpson pleaded not guilty and eventually won his trial, but his reputation and status were far from recovery. In September of 2007, Simpson was once again arrested, this time on grounds of robbery and kidnapping sports memorabilia. Simpson is a fine example to the age old argument that celebrities should not be given special treatment in the court room because at the end of the day, no matter now powerful they might be, they’ve committed a crime and should pay for their wrongdoing. Orenthal James Simpson was born in San Francisco on July 9, 1947. He was raised in a housing project situated in the heart of a shady neighborhood. At the age of two, he developed rickets, a crippling disease due to lack of vitamins in young mammals, and was left pigeon-toed and weak. He had to wear a brace until the age of 5 (biography.com). Growing up, Simpson frequently met trouble. He joined a gang and was briefly incarcerated in a young men’s facility. But there was a ray of light in this troubled young man: His passion and love for football. Simpson played in his high school years. It kept him out of trouble and most importantly off the streets. Simpson denied these charges and from there the lengthy and extensive trial began. After being acquitted, Simpson all but disappeared from the media’s sight. In 2007, Simpson published a book, which he named, all irony aside, “If I Did It”. Then, in September 2007, Simpson is once again arrested, this time on the charges of bank robbery. Despite his promising career, OJ Simpson made some very bad decisions regarding his life. Should he be punished despite the fact that he’s a public figure and has accomplished so much? Absolutely. Celebrities should be held accountable for their actions because it shows other people that crime is not okay and that justice will always prevail. In front of the law, everyone is equal. With all these incidents piled up on his image, OJ Simpson remains to be one of the most controversial figures in NFL history.
