Jorge Mario Bergoglio was born from Italian immigrants on December 17, 1936 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. His father, Mario Jose Bergoglio, was a railway worker in Italy, while his mother Regina Maria Sivori, was a housewife. After he graduated from high school, he went to the University of Buenos Aires where he obtained his master's degree in chemistry. At the same time, he began his training at Villa Devoto, which is a Jesuit seminary. He then joined the Society of Jesus in March of 1958. He also obtained a degree in Philosophy and a doctorate in theology. He was ordained as a priest in December 1969 and in 1973 served as the Jesuit provincial of Argentina. He was given the name of titular bishop of Auca, as well as the auxiliary of Buenos Aires. In February of 2001, Pope John Paul II raised Jorge Mario Bergoglio to the position of cardinal. He also attended the papal election in 2005, however he was the runner-up. After Pope Benedict XVI resigned, again Jorge Mario Bergoglio was present at the papal election. At the age of 76, he was elected the 266th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church on March 13, 2013. His election made him the first pope from the Americas, as well as the first Jesuit and non-European pope. He chose Francis as his title because it symbolized his message as pope, which was to turn away from riches to help the poor, just like St. Francis of Assisi.
Pope Francis is the people’s pope. He has been accepted by Protestants and Evangelicals. Timothy George called the pope “Our Francis too.” The pope has led many people by his example and his actions are exhibited through his modesty. The pope was also asked about his stance on same-sex marriage, he replied, “Who am I to judge?” Through his answer, he displayed how only God is able to judge people. Pope Francis’ goal is to spread the message that even though we are different, but we are all children of God. We should love each other and spread God’s Word. This should be the centerpiece of all religions.
Pope Francis had and continues to have a tremendous impact on the Roman Catholic Church, especially in Italy. Pope Francis has largely impacted Italy because it is where Vatican City is situated.
Furthermore, the renewal and rejuvenation of the Catholic Church makes Pope John a major reformer of the 20th century and a significantly large influencer during his time. He made universal and worldwide impacts to religious adherents by reforming and revitalizing the Christian traditions through achieving ressourcement, aggiornamento. In addition, his passion for unity amongst Christian faiths and interfaith dialogue, world peace and economic justice also furthered his impact not only within the Catholic Church but also in other Christian denominations. Moreover, in the short time of Pope John’s authority and power within the Catholic Church, the contributions and achievements he made had a substantially large impact to the Christian traditions as he brought the Catholic Church into the modern era,

Pope Urban II was sought by Alexius Comnenus, a Byzantine Emperor who wanted the papacy to help his army hold off the advancing Seljuk Turks in Asia Minor. The reason for Alexius Comnenus contacting the pope rather than another emperor or monarch wasn’t just the fact they were secular, but because the pope would have more power to persuade the people. The Gregorian movement in 1050-80 was ultimately was responsible for the new instilled power of the papacy’s position over nonreligious rulers. The pope agreed to aid the Byzantine emperor, but he also had his own agenda when it came to the military advances and the new power of his position. The papacy did not intend to only help the Byzantine Empire but to further save all of Christendom from being overrun.
Archbishop Oscar Arnulfo Romero was born in Ciudad Barrios, El Salvador on August 15, 1917. He was the second of seven children born to parents Santos Romero and Guadalupe de Jesus Santos. At the age of twelve, his parents were not able to afford his education and therefore apprenticed him to a carpenter. Oscar trained to be a carpenter, but he always knew he wanted to be a priest. When he was just thirteen years old, he left home to study at a seminary in the city of San Miguel (Kellogg). There he studied for seven years, and left in 1937 for the national seminary, which was run by the Jesuits in San Salvador. He later went to Rome and studied Theology at the Gregorian University in Rome. While studying there, World War II spread throughout Europe, but that did not stop him from earning his Licentiate degree in Theology.
Pope Francis, the 266th pope, spreads his kindness throughout the world through his humility and approachability. He travels the world, supporting the poor and unfortunate. Pope Francis has served as both archbishop and cardinal for more than 12 years. This definitely shows his dedication to follow God's teachings and spread it everywhere he can.
Who is Francis of Assisi? What makes him such an influence in our religious history? What are his accomplishments and insights that helped shape Christianity to what it is today? How did his actions to perform the gospel life change the view of Christianity? There are many factors that went into the life of Francis that made Christianity what it is today. The transition that Francis had to go through in order to become a man of Christ, to the attempt to convert the Sultan. Saint Francis relationships with his father, Saint Clare, and Bishop Guido, all of which have contributed to the successes of Francis throughout his life.
In chapter two, ‘Francis and His Companions,’ Cunningham exposes the considerable growth in Francis of Assisi’s influence, as he recounts his companions that joined him after deciding to live his life. The chapter is significant because it exposes how Francis of Assisi’s gospel is different from the orthodox Catholic practices, which recognized the pope, as the sole Vicar of Christ. (Cunningham 32). This chapter is important in my life because it reinforces my conviction God is the almighty and all-powerful, and all people regardless of the status of the needed to worship
I would love to learn more about Pope Francis’s views on everything. He demonstrates what it is like to be a virtuous person and as Aristotle has said “The virtuous life is the best life.” By being as virtuous as Pope Francis, I believe that is what makes us, as humans, the most happiest.

These followers of his became known as Friars. Francis lived a life of helping others which he summed up with three vows for others to follow.

Francis was famous for his love of all creation. He called for simplicity of life, poverty, and humility before God. He worked to care for the poor. Thousands were drawn to his sincerity, piety, and joy. In all his actions, Francis sought to follow fully and literally the way of life demonstrated by Christ in the Gospels. He died in 1226, at the age of 44.
Saint Francis of Assisi was a uniquely spiritual man who gave up a life of wealth and position to lead a life of poverty in accordance and service to God. Embracing a life according to the Gospels, Francis went on to establish a Monastic Order, known as the Franciscans. In the midst of the political climate within the religious community of Italy, Francis emerged a champion for the poor and sick, with humility and no regard for himself. Francis exhibited his love for God through his love and admiration for all of God's creation including nature. The principles of Saint Francis are as relevant today as they were in thirteenth century Italy; service and love to all of God’s creation.
