A Brief Biography Of Jorge Mario Bergoglio

Jorge Mario Bergoglio was born from Italian immigrants on December 17, 1936 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. His father, Mario Jose Bergoglio, was a railway worker in Italy, while his mother Regina Maria Sivori, was a housewife. After he graduated from high school, he went to the University of Buenos Aires where he obtained his master's degree in chemistry. At the same time, he began his training at Villa Devoto, which is a Jesuit seminary. He then joined the Society of Jesus in March of 1958. He also obtained a degree in Philosophy and a doctorate in theology. He was ordained as a priest in December 1969 and in 1973 served as the Jesuit provincial of Argentina. He was given the name of titular bishop of Auca, as well as the auxiliary of Buenos Aires. In February of 2001, Pope John Paul II raised Jorge Mario Bergoglio to the position of cardinal. He also attended the papal election in 2005, however he was the runner-up. After Pope Benedict XVI resigned, again Jorge Mario Bergoglio was present at the papal election. At the age of 76, he was elected the 266th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church on March 13, 2013. His election made him the first pope from the Americas, as well as the first Jesuit and non-European pope. He chose Francis as his title because it symbolized his message as pope, which was to turn away from riches to help the poor, just like St. Francis of Assisi.
Pope Francis is the people’s pope. He has been accepted by Protestants and Evangelicals. Timothy George called the pope “Our Francis too.” The pope has led many people by his example and his actions are exhibited through his modesty. ...igions. He is a humble person who associates with the poor and less fortunate. His aspiration is to have peace in the world and to build a unified society. This ambition has brought worldwide acceptance by all religions. Furthermore, he was not afraid to criticize a bishop for his luxurious spending. The pope was also asked about his stance on same-sex marriage, he replied, “Who am I to judge?” Through his answer, he displayed how only God is able to judge people. Pope Francis’ goal is to spread the message that even though we are different, but we are all children of God. We should love each other and spread God’s Word. This should be the centerpiece of all religions.

Pope Francis had and continues to have a tremendous impact on the Roman Catholic Church, especially in Italy. Pope Francis has largely impacted Italy because it is where Vatican City is situated.
