PS/IS 119 Anika Lamia 804 4/11/14 Social Studies Exit Project The events of 9/11 occurred on September 11, 2001. It was a terrorist attack organized by Osama Bin Laden and Al Qaeda. The attack first started when an American Airlines flight #11 was hijacked by Al Qaeda sympathizers. They rerouted the plane’s direction and at 8:46am the plane crashed into floors 93-99 of the World Trade Center’s North tower. This killed everyone boarded on the plane along with hundreds of others that were present inside the building. Then at 9:03am the hijackers crash United Airlines Flight 175 into the south tower floors 75-85. This also killed everyone on board along with hundreds inside the tower. Then at 9:37 Hijackers crash American Airlines Flight 77 into the Pentagon In Washington D.C. During this attack 59 aboard were killed along with 125 already present inside the building. At 10:28am the North tower finally collapsed. The attacks altogether resulted in 2,996 deaths. The events of 9/11 had a huge effect on America as a whole. There were many deaths, injuries, devastations, and the city was left in ruins. All the destruction led to many people joining together and helping in the long and rough clean up. According to sources, “It took nine months to remove approximately 1.8 million tons from the WTC site.” The main focus during the clean up was to find the remains of the victims. After 9/11 everyone had different feelings and thoughts. Many demanded revenge and many couldn’t believe what they had lost. The clean up of the city after 9/11 took nearly a year but the clean up of people’s hearts and feelings took much longer. Osama Bin Laden was caught and killed in 2011 and that gave a lot of people peace to know that the one guilty for the 9/11 attacks was rightfully punished. Now everyone feels more secure with the safety and security precautions that were taken after 9/11. Everyone is already expecting the procedures beforehand. The fight against terrorism is still going on strong. But, overall the events that took place on September 11,2001 impacted everyone and in some ways it led to making America what it is today.
