Presentation of procedures for new information: Students will write an expository paragraph in response to: If you could change 1 thing in your library what would it be and why? The teacher will provide the students with the information to complete an expository paragraph using a graphic organizer and The 5 steps Approach to Writing Guide. The expository paragraph will be assessed using a 12 point rubric. Ask students, “Do you have a favorite sandwich?” Discuss the students’ response and explain that a recipe for making their favorite sandwich is a “how to guide” on making all types of food. Once you and the students have completed the graphic organizer advise them it’s time to start writing our paragraph using the 5 step Writing process. Say, “Before we begin, let’s review the 5 step Writing process. 9. Using the overhead projector share and review the 5 step Writing process in detail *ELL may need help following along with the writing process. This can be done by the teacher or a native speaking student. 10. When completing each phase of the 5 Step Writing process with the class, be sure to explain to ELLs that their writing draft does not have to be perfect. It’s okay to have words misspelled and incomplete grammar. This will be corrected in the Revision & Editing phase. 11. Provide the classroom with a sample paragraph of your recipe. Independent Practice: 1. The students will create their favorite sandwich recipe using the graphic organizer and 5 step writing process.
