Recommended: Effects of media on youth

I was first introduced to the band Green Day when I listened to their song “Good Riddance” on their album Warning when it was released in 1997. I continued to listen to Green Day’s music throughout my teenage years after they released their next two albums, American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown. When I was young I enjoyed Green Day’s music because it was fun to listen and sing along with, but as I grew older and actually started interpreting the lyrics of their songs I realized that there was a deeper message to their music. Many of my friends also commented on the motive behind Green Day’s music, and this led us to long-winded discussions about government and politics. We didn’t fully comprehend what we were talking about, but it was obvious that their music had provoked interesting emotions in us. Green Day’s often controversial punk-rock was so influential that it sent a media-influenced generation looking for answers to the meaning behind their politically-charged lyrics in their albums American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown even years later. Billie Joe Armstrong has been quoted in recent years saying that their hit album American Idiot was written partly in response the “the worst political times of my lifetime that I can remember.” (92Y, 2010) As a teenager listening to the song “American Idiot”, I didn’t fully appreciate the message the band was trying to deliver. I understood the general message of the song, which talks about how their fans should be more original and try not to follow what the general media preaches. It wasn’t until I was older that I started understanding how much influence the media has in our everyday lives. It is powerful music written by the youth of America, youngsters who did have a stake in the Vietnam War.     In the summer of 1969, a music festival called, “Woodstock”, took place for three straight days in Upstate, New York, with thirty-two musical acts playing, and 500,000 people from around the world coming to join this musical, peaceful movement. Woodstock started out being a small concert, created to locally promote peace in the world, by the power of music and its lyrics. Now, Woodstock is still being celebrated over 40 years later. The chaotic political climate that the ‘baby boomers’ were growing up in is most likely the reason for this event becoming of such an importance to the world. The violence of the Vietnam War, protests at Kent State and the Democratic Convention, and the assassinations contributed to an ‘out of control’ world. The fact that so many people came to Woodstock and were able to latch onto the ideals of peace, love, and community became a wonderful, joyous symbol to this generation. This three day music festival represented the ideal for baby boomers during a chaotic political time.

The audience becomes furious to all the killing and death in the world and they need someone there to sympathize with them. Anti-Flag gets the listener angry by exposing the faults of the world.     Music has been around for thousands of years. Music has progressed since that time and has slowly become what it is today. Though music has been around for such a long time, protest music just started to develop in the Vietnam Era, the year 1954. The war started the era of protest which, in turn, created a new form of music which incorporated a specific type of lyric that was a way of expressing protest through the song. Since music in this era was already a big thing, artists thought it would be a good idea to get their political viewpoints out there. They did it through something that affected everybody in that time and space. The artists view spread quickly through the country because of the catchy tune and the viewpoints that are listed. In the United States of America, it is a very common thing to conform to others in a group (Conformity…). Since conformity is such a common occurrence in a large group, all the artist has to do is find a couple of people in the group, group being an audience, who agree with the artist and the rest will unfold on its own. The artist will keep on performing while the word of him and his music will spread from person to person. Conformity will ultimately bring people together on the same viewpoint until eventually, there are thousands of people there with the artist to protest. So within this disturbed era, many citizens started to rebel and question the authorities saying that they were ruining the country.     Abrasive rock music has rarely been considered a potent political force in the United States. Punk is no exception to this rule. As a subculture, punk has received much more atention for its hairstyles and caustic sounds than its politics. As Daniel Rosenblat points out, punk rock “Confound[s] our conventional (western) notions of politics by [its] emphasis on maters which we consign to different domains entirely” (1). What he means i s that because punk does not express its political discourse in traditional venues or traditional terms, it is discounted as apolitical or politicaly impotent. To wit, Hebdige argues that subcultures can do litle more than provide a ‘signal of Refusal,’ and should be considered “just the darker side of sets of regulations” (3). Latino punks have countered these claims since the 1970s, with lyrical assertions that their political speech is an essential precursor to political change. In this paper I explore the ways in which contemporary Latino punk self -defines as political, in contrast to early punk bands who refused to be affiliated with politics. By explicitly aligning with political causes, Latino punk establishes a tension between punk’s historical tendencies towards ‘forgetfulness’ and ‘self -fulfilment,’ and new political agendas that push awareness and change. I conclude by asserting that the punk movement is preoccupied with individual fulfilment at the expense of political activism, a tendenc y that ultimately undermines its political import.
