Recently, my family and I made a 700 mile journey to this town, on my first day of school a rumor circulated around campus that I was an undercover cop sent in to “Pull a 21 jump street” now as cool as that sounds to secretly infiltrate a drug ring of 18 year olds, while coincidentally getting to go through the “glorious” 4 years of highschool over. However, I hope I would be a good enough cop that they would send me to work
The film Friday Night Lights, directed by Peter Berg explains a story about a small town in Odessa, Texas that is obsessed to their high school football team (Permian Panthers) to the point where it’s strange. Boobie Miles (Derek Luke) is an cocky, star tailback who tore his ACL in the first game of the season and everyone in the town just became hopeless cause their star isn’t playing for a long time. The townspeople have to now rely on the new coach Gary Gaines (Billy Bob Thornton), to motivate the other team members to be able to respect, step up their game, and improve quickly. During this process, racism has made it harder to have a success and be happy and the team has to overcome them as a family.
In all respect I've always had a fascination with becoming an F.B.I. agent. As my interest grow during my educational progression, I'm learning how my personal attributes with help me in my given field. First of is the size of my physical build, which I believe will help me with any possible altercation I my encounter. My positive attitude toward life will also be helpful. I also have a good decision making skills, with out letting let and kind of prejudice entering my mind. The reason I am so positive about this is I've had such a variety of friends. I've had friends of different races, ethnic background, and religious beliefs. I've also have a vary strong emotional barrier due to all the tragedy I've gone though in my life. I've lost three of my closet friends in the last four years. Through all those years I was the person who was strong to help my entire friends threw our losses. When I get into the field all the knowledge I've acquired in my education will in all intent be useless. How do I know this you ask? Several people I know in several justice fields have told me that the real education comes in the field. Their have several movies such as "The Siege", Silence of the Lambs" witch have inspired me to follow in this possible life style. The T.V. show cops is the most instamental to me, due to the way they always explain how to dissolve every encounter, and what would happen to the perpetrator. These movies and T.V. shows give a positive outlook on my possible life in handling these issues. I would not leave out the possibility of becoming a scout leader. The reason I think I could handle this job is because I've always had an attraction to teaching children. I have been babysitting children for seven years, for my next-door neighbors and my aunt. Any other person besides their parents or me could always never control the three boys next door. Then there are my two cousins who were both girls. I always loved watching children; I just get along with them so well. I believe I could make a difference in their lives.
On Tuesday, September 23rd, I had the opportunity to do a ride along with the Takoma Park police department. My ride along was quite interesting. I rode with Officer Carl, a twenty-six-year-old officer who has been with the police department for six months. During the ride along we engaged in so many conversations concerning his work routine, and some the important things to be aware of as a police officer. Officer Carl and I were about the same age group so I felt much comfortable talking to him. Before I went for the ride along I had a different perspective about police work, I thought police work was much amusing and entertaining, but after the ride along with Officer Carl, I have realized that there is much more to police work and it often
I chose to do my ride along with the Lexington Police Department. The police officer that I got to ride along with was Officer Ernesti. Officer Ernesti has an associates degree in criminal justice. After high school he attended Southeast Community College in Lincoln. He says that he wished he chose a different field to study. The reason is was because he got in a fight with a suspect and injured his arm. He was afraid that he did something severe to his arm that he would not be able to perform any police duty. If he would have had a different degree he could have fallen back to something that does not relate to criminal justice. Before getting hired by the Lexington Police Department in January of 2014 he worked in Gosper County for two years. During his time at Gosper County he was a K-9 handler.
I have worked in law enforcement for nearly 18 years. I began my career in 2000 at the Metcalfe County Sheriff’s Department after graduation from the Kentucky Department of Criminal Justice in Richmond, Kentucky. I also worked at the Edmonton Police Department and Glasgow Police Department. My favorite genre of television is Science Fiction and Horror, Specifically the Netflix Original Stranger Things. The show focuses on the investigation of a missing boy along with many supernatural events around the small town of Hawkins, such as an appearance of a telekinetic girl. Stranger Things is my favorite television show because of the cast, characters, and mystery that draws me in and keeps me guessing which direction the show will go.
Most people, if asked would surely agree that being a police officer is not easy, but most probably do not realize that becoming one is just as difficult. During our field trip to the Warren County Police Department Major Bowles and officer Fields talked a little about the extensive process, similar to the process our textbook, Forensic Psychology describes, of being hired into the police department. After putting in their application and being selected to move forward in the program a future police officer must have a background check, complete a psychological screening, a polygraph test, several interviews, and a physical test. On June 11, 1962 three prisoners tried to escape from the most feared prison in America better known as “the rock”. Not even the notorious prisoners could escape. Frank, Clarence and John desperately wanted to show everyone that they could escape from Alcatraz. It was almost impossible to escape from. Frank Morris, John Anglin, and Clarence Anglin died trying to escape from Alcatraz because the waters were too dangerous, too cold, and most people failed trying to escape.
Something happened my sophomore year of high school that little did I know would change my perspective, not only of myself, but life in general. I was looking for something new and exciting to enhance my high school existence and decided to give the Criminal Justice Club a try. I was familiar with the advisor of the club, but knew that the club had astigmatism for attracting those students who were just looking for something easy to do. I knew about the criminal justice system, but only what they show on Law and Order. However, I immediately fell in love, not only with the club but the entire prospect of Criminal Justice. I participated in a police ride-along with the Fairfax County Police Department on October 30th. I chose the Fair Oaks District Station for the ride since my home falls within that particular district’s boundaries. At 8 p.m., I was introduced to Officer Crutchman; the police officer I would be accompanying for the night. We headed out after a brief overview of some safety rules and expectations. Over the course of the shift I was able to observe many of the routine duties of a FCPO such as responding to calls, setting speed traps, performing traffic stops, assisting fellow officers, and patrolling neighborhoods and public parks. This spring I was enrolled in the course entitled Practicum I. This program allowed students to observe and document how working professionals perform their job responsibilities. After speaking with Lieutenant Diamond, I decided to intern with the Albany State University Police Department. While working closely with the officers, I was assigned to different departments on campus. This included the main office, dispatch, and security detail.
1) For the last two years of high school, I was a member of my school’s show choir. Show choir is the most collaborative experience I have ever had. I was one of forty other girls who became my family. We spent days, weeks, months together. The experiences I shared with them have bonded us together forever. I learned that no matter what, your team is behind you. I had some awesome days and some horrible days, but my girls were always there to support me.
