In Roland Emmerich’s 2009 disaster movie ‘2012’ the earth is sent into a geological and meteorological super-disaster based on the 2012 phenomenon and the Mayan calendar myth. This involves shifting in the earth’s plate tectonics, the total collapse of L.A, destruction of famous landmarks and worldwide flooding. Due to a lucky break three massive arks were being secretly built in China for 3 years under the jurisdiction of the highest powers in the world.
Following their ‘parody’ of the biblical “Noah’s Ark” story two of every animal on earth were brought and stowed in the arks for the impending hit and only a select group of the earth’s ‘elite’ were boarded; after surviving the final flood that signaled the restart of civilization the arks set course for Africa where the waters had begun receding. But what happened after the ships sailed off into the horizon? How will life continue on? What happened to all the plant-life? Where will the animals go? How will the animals survive and continue on? Where will everyone go and how will civilization start itself up?

I noticed in the movie that there were allot of clear comparisons to “Noah’s Ark” in which the world is ending by a great flood and the last vestiges of humanity are saved by giant boats. In one of the scenes during the end of the film, as our ragtag team of survivors is trekking across the Himalayan Mountains, a group of helicopters fly overhead each carrying one animal. Now, if the movie is going all out with its comparisons, combined with the limited amount of space for both people and animals, there will have only been enough space for two animals each. This is later confirmed in a later scene inside one of the ark’s holds where you can only see two ...

...ived. While aquatic plants would most likely survive, land plants can die very quickly.
Even then, assuming that seeds survived, the conditions would almost certainly not have been amenable for the regrowth of vegetation. The masses of silt and debris would have been fairly uniform across the world - the flood was global, remember? - yet different plants have adapted for different conditions and different soil types. In order to reproduce and spread, many plants need a symbiotic relationship with animals or insects for pollination and seed dispersal. Often this can be remarkably specific, with only one species of plant working with one species of insect. While some plant species can pollinate and disperse seed just with the wind, an environment reduced to only a few individuals spread across the entire planet, in hostile conditions, is hardly conducive to this.
On November 17th approximately 30 people and I congregated to the OSU College of Nursing to watch The Anonymous People, a documentary film about American’s who are living in long-term recovery from alcohol and other drug addiction. The film addressed the stigma related to alcoholics and drug addicts, including their experiences to the track of recovery. Applicable to what we have discussed in class, I was able to understand more into the healthcare stigma and healthcare disparities that people around us deal with daily. The eye opening video provided an example into the lives of people, famous or not, being mistreated and judged due to their life choices. As a group frequently misunderstood, the film tries to teach the audience to a new view
In basketball, the National Championship game is the dream of every kid that plays basketball in college. NC State’s basketball team wasn’t well known in 1983. Jim Valvano was the coach and he knew he had a great group of kids. When they won the ACC tournament against the great Ralph Sampson and Virginia, people thought that the win was just luck and they probably wouldn’t make last when they got into the tournament. Throughout the tournament, NC State kept surviving and advancing. In Johnathan Hock’s documentary “Survive and Advance”, Hock uses stock footage of the games that were played during the tournament, different points of view from the players, and the sequence of the documentary to prove that NC State’s basketball team were the underdogs during the whole tournament; however they were able to win despite their adversity
In Jerry Oltion’s “Judgment Passed” Noah’s ark is mentioned numerous times which assimilates to Oltion’s work as an allegory for the Christian salvation. The character Jody explains to Greger that the astronauts are possibly the next Ark. Jody states “We were all set to start our own colony, after all. We’re the best genetic stock the UN Space Authority could find, and we’ve got more fertilized ova in the freezer. Maybe God decided it would be a ...
On our planet, phenomena’s occur occasionally in nature. Tornadoes, earthquakes, and flashfloods are all types of phenomena’s that could occur. Most of these mysterious events are small and go unnoticed; however, on a rare occasion these sorts of event can be horrendous. One such occasion occurred back around 4,000 BC (Werner Keller, 48). As the story goes, God’s population was growing rapidly on earth. At this point, he had been growing bored with the same people on earth so he made sure no man would live past the age of 120. Given this time, the people of earth started to take advantage of the human race; these acts of selfishness disgusted God. He decided to destroy everything on earth. A man by the name of Noah had lived his life by God’s nature, which eventually led to a close relationship between the two. God had told Noah to build a boat with exact measurements. God had instructed Noah to put two of every kind of animal into the boat; one had to be male and the other female. Then God told Noah to get into the boat with his family, their families, and the animals. Then for forty days and forty nights the clouds seemed to have poured endless amounts of water onto the earth (Genesis 6:1-9). Floods rushed through the landscape, destroying everything in its path. The waters were higher than the tallest mountains, standing above the highest peaks. All living things on earth had died. The water covered the earth at this level for five months (Paul S. Taylor, 1). In time the water began to dry up. Eventually Noah was able to leave the ship and release all he had brought with him. From this point, evolution occurs.
The Babylonian God Ea had decided to eliminate humans and other land animals with a great flood, which was to become "the end of all flesh". He selected Utnapishtim, to build an ark to save a few humans, and some of other animals, much like Noah. In comparing and contrasting the Babylonian text and the biblical story of Noah's Ark, there are many similarities between the two stories and one would conclude that they are essentially identical. The Genesis story describes how mankind had become corrupt and how the earth was filled with violence. In the ...
The Animal Kingdom is a modern exhibit designed to follow the “natural pattern” of an African community. The most eye-popping attraction, the Kilamanjaro Safari, is an open-air, nearly barrier-free animal reserve at Florida’s Walt Disney World. It was a major shift from a cow playground to a zone of care for other wise caged animals. Here, African animals freely roam through acres of savanna, rivers, and rocky hills. The rider is advised to be aware, “You never know what could happen in the wilderness” (Tate 1).
To start off, the Watchers, Tubal-cain, Ila, and Methuselah are never mentioned in the Bible, so all the negativity in the movie that is associated with them is not in the Bible story. In addition, Noah doesn’t try or fail to find wives for his sons in the biblical account because they are already married, and nobody else but Noah, his wife, his sons, and his sons’ wives make it onto the ark. The Bible also doesn’t say the animals were put to sleep once they got onto the art, nor that Ham abandoned his kin once the art came to rest. Furthermore, the Noah film
“And God said to Noah, “I have determined to make an end of all flesh, for the earth is filled with violence through them. Behold, I will destroy the earth. Make yourself an ark…” (Genesis 6:13-14, English Standard Version) “For behold, I will bring a flood of waters upon the earth to destroy all flesh in which is the breath of life under heaven. Everything that is on the earth shall die.” (Genesis 6:17, ESV) “And of every living thing of all flesh you shall bring two of every sort into the ark to keep them alive with you. They shall be male and female.” (Genesis 6:19, ESV) “Noah did this; he did all that God commanded him.” (Genesis 6:22, ESV) “In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the second month, on that day all the fountains of the great deep burst forth, and the windows of the heavens were opened. And rain fell upon the earth forty days and forty nights.” (Genesis 7:11-12, ESV) Everyone has heard the story of Noah’s ark and the great Flood. But is that all it is? Just a story? If a catastrophe of this scale really happened, it would have left plenty of evidence behind. And it did. The fossil record shows evidence of a small period of time in which all the major groups of life (phyla) appear without ancestors. (Wieland, n.d.) This alleged explosion of evolution is called the Cambrian explosion. However, Christians believe the Cambrian explosion is actually the Flood, in which all life on earth is rapidly buried by sediments picked up from the flood waters. Another piece of evidence for the Flood is the perfectly preserved mammoths. The mammoths show signs of being instantly buried and frozen, many while standing up. (Brown, 1995-2013) Evidence for this is fou...
The story of Noah’s Ark was first written as part of the old testament by the Jewish people. However, it is predated by far by the story of the Epic of Gilgamesh, a story that originated in the same area that holds many striking similarities to the tale of Noah’s Ark. Though the story was modified to accommodate new characters, many properties of the story are similar, from small details like the creatures used as scouts to the religious purpose of the flood itself. For example, both the flood stories start with the characters receiving specific building instructions for a ship, which is to be used to spare the lives of one set of pairs of the creatures of the world. The dimensions of the ship underwent some drastic changes however, quite possibly because the dimensions of Gilgamesh’s boat were rather unreasonable: “Equal shall be her width and her length…” . Both Gilgamesh and Noah received 7 days notice, and after the flood ceased, both employed doves and ravens as scouts to determine if the land was dry yet (Gilgamesh also employed a swallow, but the results of its trip did not greatly differ from the first trip of the dove in Noah’s tale ).
Planet Earth is under attack by the very entities charged with its protection. Human beings are systematically destroying the planet and are deaf to its, so far, relatively subtle warnings. When temperatures rise by just a fraction of a degree, or yearly precipitation amounts increase by just an inch or two, these changes can be imperceptible. However, when these small changes accumulate after a period of years they can result in natural disasters that are uncommon to certain geographic areas. Ocean temperatures have steadily been on the rise for years. These changing temperatures have the potential to irrevocably change weather patterns for the entire world. In August of 2011, Hurricane Irene gave much of the east coast of the United States a taste of what changes in global weather patterns can do. The hurricane showed many communities how vastly underprepared, and unequipped they are to deal with such a storm, and it served as a wake up call to the human race, to take better care of the planet. A case study of these realizations can be viewed through the prism of severe weather related events at the Humane Society of Ocean City.

For six days and nights the wind and flood raged. On the seventh day the flood abated. Everything, including mankind, had turned to mud and clay.
In their seminar, they showed graphic images of changes the earth has seen in the last billion years. They both argue that human beings have in fact had a hand in shaping the earth’s form. The growing population of the earth’s people has caused many of the land to become infertile. The building of dams, roads and cutting down of trees have also contributed to the major natural disasters. Many people think that the modern needs more technology, but in doing so we are messing with nature and it can prove disastrous for us in the end. One example, talked about the Arabs spring and its connection to the heat wave that hit Russia and destroyed about one-third of its crops. This connection seemed slightly far-fetched can be seen as global warming impacting government and our daily lives and if we don’t look into the issues, other form of revolution we begin to take place. Another example, they discussed the climate change and it can bring diseases, especially malaria and cholera. This was even worse than the “Zombie Apocalypse”. The meant it to be as a joke to the audience, referencing the shows that people watch and see the earth been infected by a strange disease and we have only select group who survive to fight this change. We don’t want to be put in this situation because clearly we were made for this earth and we don’t want it to be destroyed. So what is our solution,
All in all, “Biblical Noah” and “Hollywood Noah” differ greatly because Aronofsky chose to portray a famous Bible story in a modern, action thriller movie, causing him to rewrite many of the crucial details and morals of the Biblical story and history as Christians see it. Although Aronofsky claims that nothing in the film contradicts the Bible, he most certainly, as Spencer puts it, “Missed the Boat” (Spencer,
Manufactured buildings, transportation, and innovations need room to grow, humans expand by conquering what does not belong to them. Storms, tornadoes, hurricanes, tsunamis, earthquakes, wildfires are nature’s way of taking it back, of starting fresh. The circle created by Mother Nature is simple: birth, survival, and death. Both nature and humans start with birth, survival is encompassed with growth and discovery, death is removal of the old and decaying for a new birth, and so the cycle repeats. Just as humans give life to future generations, nature gives life to new species. New generations create new discoveries, regrowth freshens the air and life of the once destroyed. The beginning sets the path for what is to come, what is to be discovered, what is to be destroyed, and what is to, eventually, be
